  • I loved this video!

  • The part that does not shrink is on the front side of my hair and I always pin it up also. Thanks for sharing this because I thought I was the only one. You are such a blessing. I love your videos and I hope to do a few.

  • Sis, you are so right...I had a few buttholes on my job that said some crazy jacked up stuff about my natural hair. Honey, I kept going back to work rocking my natural hair in different natural styles that I like. Long story short....I'm doing ME and not people!! Thanks for posting sis, I apologize for being so lengthy. :)

  • my nape area and front of my hair does not shrink like the rest of my hair.

  • I have that little hair tail too

  • i like my shrinkage to a certain degree...lol...it makes my hair look fuller and i have fine hair and you would never know it because of the shrinkage.

  • I love your perspective. I just saw you on Curly Nikki and decided to subscribe. Thank you for this post.

  • Hi Harmony,

I just stumbled upon your video on Curly Nikki and I love what you had to say. I know sooooo many women who need to hear (listen to) what you said because it's so true. Anyway I just wanted to say that your hair is GORGEOUS! The quirk with my hair is that the front and sides grow way faster and loger than the back, so the front is near my breast while the back is somewhere around APL. LOL! I keep her in twists (she's happiest that way anyway).

  • Loved it! I totally agree with you. If we are not going to keep it real with ourselves then who will. Surely not the outsiders b/c they will lie to your face and talk about us behind our backs. So that's right ladies do you.

That is the best advice I've heard in a while. :-)

    Thanks

  • Beautiful Beautiful story. You remind me of myself, I do things that I like too and when other people hate sometimes I continue out of spite. They can be your motivation

  • Preach preacher! Great vid.

  • Very moving video! This gets to the heart of self acceptance - shrinkage, coils, curls and all.

LOL! Your revenge on the naysayers - wearing your hair crazy

  • Amen Harmony! We have to accept our beauty, differences, and individuality and dutifully take care of what the good Lord gave us! I love this video! I use to wish my natural hair was like someone else's for a long time. But now, and I can't remember exactly when, I love my natural hair and wouldn't have it any other way!

  • Damn u Harmony, U PUT IT DOWN!!! Cyber ((HUG,HUG)) for u my Dear...There's ALWAYS STRENGTH in TRUTH.

  • Thankx Harmony...l needed to hear that

  • Girrrl! I just have to say I love this video! You were speaking the truth as well as it was very informational. Keep up the good work because I am learning from you with how to deal with my natural hair.

  • That's what I hate about girls with the wigs and weaves; they put it on and they feel as if that's their hair and that hair defines them as a person to the point where they look at a natural hair sister and make negative comments, forgetting that the hair on their head technically doesn't belong to them! And I know if they take off that wig, their hair would look just like the natural hair chick they're making negative comments about.

  • lol..went natural out of spite; you had me rolling on the floor..

  • Loving it!!!

  • thank you for this video!!

  • I straight up needed to hear this!!! Thanks alot!!

  • rofl.. I love your rants, they are on point! love you

  • bbbwwhhaha LOL@ Sometimes I went to work looking crazy on purpose and I did not give a d*amn! I went to work. I just adore your realness and confidence. I have send you a personal msg. Please view in your inbox.

  • That is too funny because that is where my softest hair texture is on my head. Preach sistah, preach!

  • That is too funny because that is where my softest hair texture is on my head.

  • Great Video! I embrace my shrinkage as well. for me, wash n gos seem to last longer because I get so much shrinkage

  • I feel you Harmony! When I first went natural almost 4yrs. ago, one of my very BEST friends said to me, "Ewww, what happened to the Sexy Nic?" Did you just leave her out back?". Girl, that did it for me and ever since, I've been just like you...DETERMINED to make my Natural Hair work for ME and I've loved every minute of it! Now the same crew that wasn't supportive are the same folks that ask me to do their daughters hair, and the main one's daughter went natural and was inspired by ME!!

  • Preach on Sista! I love your videos and this one in particular!!

  • I LOVE UR PERSONALITY, DAMN WE THINK ALIKE....KEEP IT GOING, U DROPPING KNOWLEDGE SWEETIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and im MARRIED to a white man but i would never loose me..................... IM BLACK! stay tru!

  • Very inspirational video! I love your channel!

  • girl i had the same prob! my old job was an all white very ignorant medical staff(very mall office) they made nasty comments s and I had bought a wig but when my boss said "uh i thought u were gonna wear wig!" I said I was but ya know what from now on ima wear my hair howeva it works out EVERYDAY. You gonna see my napps!!!

  • Love your hair, Harmony! It's just perfectly shaped!

  • Wonderful video! I totally agree with everything.

  • Well said.

  • This was such an amazing and inspiring video! You are on point! Thank you for sharing your thoughts:)!

  • great vid! i agree!

  • shrinkage is apart of the versatility of our hair! i honestly don't mind it

  • Great video!!!

  • Wow! My hair is the same way! My back does not shrink either! Thank you so much for pointing this out. I was wondering what was wrong with my hair in the back! It also grows faster than the rest of my hair! It's funny, but I wore wigs a lot in the past years of my being natural and people always told me to wear my natural hair and I finally started doing that! I love it and I will be wearing this way all of the time!

  • Kudos to you! I liked your story...thanks for sharing! Your hair is beautiful and I miss your videos.

  • Wow! My hair is the same way! My back does not shrink either! Thank you so much for pointing this out. I was wondering what was wrong with my hair in the back! It also grows faster than the rest of my hair!

  • ...I don't know what it was but last week I had an epiphany and said "DAMN THAT!" I love my hair. I think its beautiful. I have embraced the shrinkage and frizz and I have so much more confidence now. It took me all this time, but I'm loving every minute!

  • Thank you so much for doing this video. I stopped relaxing my hair 3 years ago and I've been fully natural for about two years, yet last week was the first time that I ever wore my own hair out in public. I had been wearing braids, kinky twists (extensions), phony ponies, weaves, wigs...everything except my own hair. I was so self conscious about what other people would think and how my hair would look at the end of the day that I allowed that fear to keep me from enjoying my hair...

  • PREACH!!!!

  • Beautifully said!

  • Thanks, I needed that! I am struggling with my hair right now. I don't like to do twist outs alot because of the knots but then I can't do wigs or any type of extensions for the winter. I am so tired of trying to figure out a protective style to wear for the winter that will keep my hands out of it without causing breakage.

Plus I have one ignorant female that always have something negative to say about my hair. I will keep it moving though and will continue to give it the attention it needs.

  • @Sagesse09 Girl do you! I use to have the same problem with knots but now I know they are a sign that I'm in need of a good trim. Also you gotta keep your ends moisturized. What my videos titled Prepping for Extra Length and Dusting/Trimming Ends.

  • @Sagesse09 Some people talk a whole lot but never really say anything useful!! If she doesn't like the way you groom your own hair, then she's the one with a problem.

If you have knots or tangles,it's good sign that you need more moisture. I'm getting good results from using cholesterol conditioner or hair mayonnaise as leave-ins.

  • WELL SAID!!! SUBSCRIBED.. p.s. pls don't "worry" about making a quick/short videos, I enjoy ALL of your mini-series and movies :) We need more women like you to speak up, encourage, inspire, and educate us all.

  • Amen...Amen...Amen!!!!!!

  • Your best video yet!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thumbs up! Great vid. It's not a true journey if you never got frustrated from time to time but you push through it, find hairstyles to get you through every length phase and stay on the hunt to learn more. THat's all you can do. It's always worth it in the end.

  • I just added this video as one of my favorite videos. Your self confidence makes you even more beautiful. Luv it!

  • YOU ARE AMAZING!

I agree with you, so many of us have a false sense of beauty. I fell in love with my hair the first week. And I've done so much with it. I post little 1 minute videos of me just prepping my hair in the morning to demonstrate how much I love my hair.

Lol @ "I don't give a damn! I'll come in crazy tomorrow just for you!"

Love you girl. Please check out my channel when u can!

    MUAH!

  • say that!

  • Great advice!!!!

  • great vid/advice.

I must say i LOVE my shrinkage. I like giving the illusion that my hair is shorter then it really is. Im past apl but with shrinkage, it doesn't even look SL lol.

  • I loved your comments! For some reason, your videos are looking really cloudy all of a sudden. It's hard to see your definition!

  • Great vid!!! I had lost my hair April 2009 due to chemo. I was wearing a wig because I didn't want to explain to my students about having breast cancer. As my hair grew back, I stopped wearing my wig and rocked a twa! Sometimes people ask me if I am going to relax. My aunt stated she can't get used to me with a fro. I say, "I am glad I am alive". Whenever I say that people get quiet. lol I don't want any of those chemicals in my pores again. I am happy and that is all that matters!!! ;-)

  • @Keesh32 "I'M GLAD I'M ALIVE" NUFF SAID! ;0)

  • Speak on it! He wanted us to look this way. We stand apart, with this hair and skin. With that being said, yes it is a journey. There are times that are hella frustrating, especially if you have a coarser texture that is very very thick, like mine. It takes time and learning the proper way to manage it. This is why I am grateful to you and so many other wonderful youtubers who take the time to make these natural hair vids. I know they help and bless a lot of people, like me.Thanks !

  • thanks i needed to hear this

  • Preach!!!! Don't let them change you or rearrange you :)....LOL!

  • wonderful video. very encouraging and true words.

  • lol I have that same problem ! the back of my hair is like a 3a texture meanwhile the rest is about a 4a lol . nice video harmony! nice to have you back

  • This was so great as life encouragement. You are great. Much Love <3

"You are focusing on the destination and the growth is in the journey" - Just wonderful :0)

  • This was so great as life encouragement. You are great. Much Love <3

  • I love your videos and I must say wearing wigs have given me a false image but also a sense of security. I have alopecia smack dab in the center of my head and wearing my own hair is very hard for me, so I wear wigs mainly the fro or curly kinds to help with my confidence. I do wear my hair around the house in a fro but going out I feel like I have to put on a wig. I think I must take baby steps until I feel more confident in wearing my own natural hair.

  • WOW... I have the same exact problem with the same spot on my head!!!! LOL that is crazy, we have the same hair type as well.

  • One of your best videos!!!!!!

  • I think those of us that are making that decision to go natural for the most part use the wigs, weaves, etc. in this aspect.....the ends justify the means which as you know just means this is what is going to help with the transition to what we really want....which is that natural, beautiful curls, coils and kinks that is versatile and wonderful but I truly do understand and respect, and agree with what u are saying.Keep doing U and I so enjoy ur vids Lady

  • @smn2275 I totally respect that. Everyone has to transition in their own way. My statements are to my Sis's who are struggling with taking off the wigs and taking out the tracks! ;0)

  • I’ve made up my mind to stop watching the videos wanting longer hair or saying “it’s been over a year why isn’t my hair a certain length”. I’m going to focus on my own natural hair journey and enjoy it.

  • Great Vid!!!! I can totally relate to everything you say!

  • Great video Harmony! I enjoyed all my stages too, I got that advice when I first went natural and it stuck with me. I bc'd really short and it was fun going thru all the diff stages and milestones. I have that same spot in the back that is softer and when I stretch my hair it goes crazy.lol

  • I am in love with your attitude about life!! I love that you don't give a damn!! The classic rebel! I'm the same way. Tell me what you don't like, I will show you something that you hate!

  • My hair does the same thing just all across the bottom 1/4 of my head.So I look like I have one of those 80's hair styles..lol

I did my BC in August of this year and you are the first person I Sub and, you have helped me more than I can thank you for.I work for a bank and got the same comments from others, but like you, i like me the way God made me and WILL not let anyone make me feel less than or imperfect in anyway. Keep living and loving life as your best you ;0)

  • "The Growth is in the Journey" that's the perfect way to put the experience. :)

  • ROTF!!!!!!!!! "I am not that chick" girl that is my line!!!!!! Girl my manager asked me "if I was alright when I first came in after the BC...I was like WHAT dude, "I am not that chick!" He loves it now...but I'm just saying *side eye* LOL Love the vid Curlfriend :)

  • 100% agree with u

  • Amen, I totally agree! Preach, my feelings exactly.

  • I love this vid thanks so much for sharing your story and your passionate advice :-)

  • I am soon going to start making vids and you are one of my hairsparations!! you are always on point!! I am going to let one of daughters watch this vid..she is at that age wear everything pretty is "straight hair"..so frustrating to have a head of beautiful hair and all she can think about is relaxing it!!! _Stay Blessed..Blondell

  • I want to know how do we wear our hair out but avoid getting those knots on the end? Any advice??

  • Yay! Somebody else has one of those patches. I have a non-curly patch in the front of my hair that drives me crazy. I have to twist it and curl it just so it can look like the rest of my hair.

I am one that is enjoying my shrinkage. I love having long hair that doesnt sweep down my back....unless I want it too. I am enjoying my journey...I hope this helps others enjoy theirs.

  • Harmony, I can relate to this video so well. I didn't big chop, however, I started to cut little by little every other month until I became all natural. I tried doing my hair myself in 2 strand twists and my hair was looking horrible. I got the stares and the comments at work and home...anyway, I was a lot like you...I didn't care what other people thought of me. I was going to do me and that was it. I have a beautiful head of hair now and I know how to take care of it. I love my fro!

  • Harmony, love your videos... I can not help but to remember when we met how sweet and encouraging you were to me about my two strand twist...! :) I was all excited about YT and then you gave me your info about your own channel.... I viewed all of your videos and was clearly able to see how positive you are about natural hair... :) keep up the great work and congrats on your web site... I still have to check it out and join!! :) sorry for my own personal delay... will be there soon! promise:)

  • no society DOESNT kno better that The Almighty! iv also fallen n love with my naps, my kitchen, and my fro bcus who am i to tell God that what He gav me isnt good enuff?

natural hair is a commitment and its not an undertakin for weak, self, conscious, vain, or impatient women and im proud of everything God has given me if different can b beautiful, y cant natural hair?

thank u Harmony on behalf of all the rebel women n America!

  • Thank you so very much for this! I just cut 8 inches of natural hair off because it was so fine and damaged from braids. I have never had such short hair, but I am only shocked at how much I am loving it! I do get a lot of compliments, but I would love it anyhow! It has only been just over 3 weeks and it has already grown almost an inch because I now know how to care for it! I can honestly say that I love my short hair! Thank you so much cause what you r saying is so empowering! God is Good!

  • Thank you so much for this video! My grandmother, when she sees my TWA (I wear and love wigs), she says your hair used to be so long and pretty. Why did you do that to your hair. It's the main reason why I don't rock my TWA. It's a shame, but I don't think I look good with a TWA when I look in the mirror, but that's a different story. I will be brave some time this week and will rock my TWA because I do love it because I love my hair...I truly do. Thanks again!

  • Very well said!! Thanx for making this vid, i hope the message reaches a lot of people!!

  • Your confidence is enlightening. Something everyone should have and rock as its impossible and not healthy to have the "seal of approval" from others as to how or why you wear your hair the way your do. Great video, point well said.

  • Tell it like it is beautiful black sista!

  • SPEAK!! :) I love, love, love what you said about beauty, being comfortable in your our skin, and not allowing the opinions of others define you and change your perception of self-beauty. Thumbs up!

  • OMG!!!!!!!! Me too...the same spot and everything, it just loose in the back, lol!!!

  • Girl, you are a trip!!! LOL I LOVE your confidence! You had me cracking up when you said that you are not that chick...lol priceless :). I also find it funny that people feel it's okay to make negative comments about our natural hair when we are not asking for their opinion. Like we are going to change it because they don't like it...please lol. Compliments are fine with me but my thoughts about my hair is all that matters. I think all naturals should have your confidence...YOU ROCK!!!

  • i love love love your accent! i love love love your hair as well!

  • i know how you felt i got that same look, when my hair was shrunken i got the did you cut your hair. i did the same thing i went through it even with family members . I dont care what they think im doing me preech it

  • Wow! It's funny...I was just online shopping for a weave to install...I think Imma rethink that (lol!!)...Thank you!

  • @kookyv Ain't nothing wrong with wearing a weave just as long as it does not define you!. ;0)

  • @FreeWorshipFreeWors Yep, I hear ya...

  • @kookyv lol me too. But I haven't worn one in over a year, and i LOVE me. Its undescribable sometimes, but i feel so much more sexy now than i ever have when i was trying to hide tracks, blend the textures, and pretend. :) love this video btw

  • ha, ha! I haven't worn one in 6 months myself, and was looking at options for protective styling. But I'll admit that at times I did feel prettier with a weave on (crazy!). The journey is frustrating in the beginning, but I loving hair more and more the further in get into my journey. It's pulled back most of the time, because I'm having probs with styling. But this vid touched on some great points!

  • girl you are the truth....that really just made me happy I love hearing you guys talk about how others try to make you feel bad...thank you for the advise and I totally agree

  • Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for this vid. I am so feed up with these people complaining about their hair not growing fast enough or long enough. Just live in the moment with your hair and see the beauty in it as it is. Just imagine someone appreciating you not for who you are but who they want you to be. Not a cool way to look at people or hair or anything.

  • Long flowing hair IS beautiful. So is kinky/curly hair. There is no one standard of beauty. It comes in many textures, colors and lengths.
