Like all of us, Stevens was influenced more by his cultural upbringing than later events. He must believe that he is stopping to smell the roses and not letting life pass him buy, even as he abandons stabbing social commentary for the comfortable refuge of wealthy conservatism. He may believe he got his through hard work, and why should others get a free ride? He would not find his current mindset to conflict with the dim view of capitalism painted in this amazing performance.

This is a great song that's even more relevant today than it was in the late 1960s. However the references to religion ought to be changed. We need skepticism because religion has become an appendage of the corporate world where "God wants you to be rich". The brotherhood of man has been trashed in favor of greed.

THIS was the original(and easily the best)version that Ray recorded of this awesome song and though I have seen several videos of Ray singing this here on Youtube I'm pretty sure that this is the ONLY one of Ray's ORIGINAL version. Ray cut this song at least twice that I know of.

About some guy who's I guess headed down the wrong path and this other person's telling him streighten himself out and pay attention to the real important things.

Also, 1 thing that bothers me is I have the feeling that the many people who are discusted with this can sometimes be the very same people who throw litter on the streets of their coummunity.
