In the northwestern Australia, we have huge tides, up to 12m

huge evaporation and huge dry rivers and lakes.

Evaporation is up to 4m per year and can be increased.

Huge 12m tidal erosion can revive old dry paleo dormant once mighty rivers, creeks and lakes,

desalinate the country and change deserts to rain forests to provide more rain across Australia.

Australia is not in drought, 2009 eastern states and south western Australian the drought has broken and we have just gone through one of the coldest winter in decades. One of the best snow seasons ever!

I live right there where that was filmed. Much rice is grown in sandy type soils with high drainage and water loss, so yes this can be said to be a poor place to grow rice. But if not here, where? Do we 'eat' imports? Sorry but the artisian water table IS in fact building up pressure again, sure its not what it was but since the capping of bores campaign several years ago it looks like this may well be sustanable. I hope you understand more than you let on guys....

I'm from Aus and yes, a lot of these farmers grow foolish crops. Drought isn't a new thing in Aus, we have cycles. They really should know better than to just grow whatever they want then complain when it doesn't work.

Abandon rice farm for grape is immoral?! Unless water is dirt cheap, growing rice doesn't make economic sense in Australia; rice takes much more water to grow then grape but selling at a much lower price. Why no one complains when Chinese build cities; Vietnameses plant coffee; or Malaysians grow palm for oil?

People, especially local people complain about building cities, or having export crops that were forced on these countries by the IMF to gain export income to pay off debt to the IMF! People need more than food to survive and economy need foreign cash to stay afloat. Simply blaming on IMF or capitalism does not solve anything. Beside, the rising price is the most effective incentives to grow more food. Why farmers had to have low pay when you can enjoy a/c and computer and freedom of occupation and speech? If you manually control food price, more farmers will walk out to other jobs and the cycle continue until you let food price to rise even more sharply.
