  • Wonderful music and performance! Only musical snobs can value the pathological contortions of Stravinskij, Strauss (Richard), Schoenberg or Schreker - not to mention the contrived pompousness of Wagner - higher than this. On a par with Gounod and Massenet, the pinnacle of musical poetry forever!

  • magnificent opera .....what a shame its not performed more often, particularly at the Metropolitan where it had a successful première in 1910.
