i agree, this richter recording is wonderful. The valses require clarity of style and a detached simplicity which Richter clearly commands. This music needs modesty from the performer and modesty is one quality I don't associate with Martha or Michelangeli (though I admire both and consider them superior to Richter in other repertoire)
I hate how people who have never coughed in their life decide to thrown coughing fits in the middle of concerts and mar an otherwise perfect live recording!
@coasterman16 it's a live concert, not a digital record. so deal with it. what makes you sure that person has never coughed in his life anyways? besides, you don't even know how big the audience actually is. coughing and background noises in a concert are just normal. i don't even notice them cause what i wanna hear, is the music.
well everybody else seems to compare why can t I ....... of course i haven t mentioned the many young and unknown pianists that woulod play very well this. Sergey Kutznev for one. If perlemuter recorded it then of ourse I would worship that but though he did most Ravels works can t recall this one being played. so as much as I adore Richter and I mean worship Im afraid I like a more perfumed aproach.... and no i don t spell well ;)
I am disappointed. Marhta, Martha ... . Martha is a great artist but the DG recital of seventies is a wrong thing. Bad technique! Bad style! Very imaginative but Valsees nobles et sentimentales was keep away from CD transfer! Why? Not good enough is the answer!!! The art of Richter in this piece is like Furtwaengler in Brahms. A treasure.
@GiovanniEMB i agree i was disappointed in Argerich's Valses, she is so retrained in that recording. i don't know that i've heard one i can say--that's it. which kind of makes me sad.
some parts reminds me of Schuman's papillions

My thoughts on the coughing fools. I believe there are people who like to cough to effect their surrondings.

some of the fragments of these pieces sound like Ravel's La Valse

@coasterman16 I happen to like coughing. It makes you feel like you're actually in the crowd.

very good. but for me the Martha rec. is the most imaginitive and of course Michelangeli.

martha's version is not the best for this piece, for many reasons
