Does anyone know what key Gary is harpin in on the song - Sadie??? Is that an original song. I luv that song but its hard for me to understand all the lyrics. Any chance you can post the lyrics. By the way that was some kick ass harpin in this video, both you guys rock!!!
There's a new group on facebook called "The Unofficial Gary Primich Fan Group": a great platform where people are sharing stories, pics and what have you... Please take a look, join and spread the word so we can keep the memory of this excellent musician and wonderful man alive! Thanks in advance. wannes
Thanks to David for posting this amazing insight into a guy who influenced myself and others very much here in Australia, near the end zone. The shame was we never got to see & hear him 'live' out here and I'm sure he would have liked a run down to OZ.. I'm a big fan and in my show/playing I try to carry on succinct harpin' tone he speaks of and also I give a respectful nod to blues history as he obviously accomplished in his days. So... RIP Gary, your music and lovin' vibe lives on forever.
I had the pleasure to meet him here in Sweden 3 different.
He was so humble and shared alot of hints and tricks....it´s sad though to see him talking on this vid, he doesen´t seem completet sober...I will remember the nice, warm meetings, driving him to the hotel after one gig.....or sitting with him, discussing the bluesscene in USA and Sweden and comparing that...it´s such a loss that he´s gone....thanks for posting
I used to hear Gary play at J&J's Blues Bar in Fort Worth. And I met him at a Harmonica Master Class once. Super nice guy...humble. Great player. My heart goes out to those who really knew him.
Took lessons from Gary in the early 80's when he played with the Mannish Boys. Some people don't realize what a good guitar player he was also. The most important thing he taught me about playing harp was that a solo has to tell a story as at the time my solo's tended to be abstract and he zero'd me in on developing a theme. Also he showed me how to come in on the half step which really give a solo kick as you come in. Rest in peace Gary you will be missed.
I played with The Gary Primich Band in 1995 as Bassist and toured the world with Gary. This video presentation shows Gary in so many fantastic ways. Just listen to the seriousness of Gary's explaination of playing. Watch the end at his "in the moment" playing. Remember, he's in his living room.
The guy played like that all the time.
And that LAUGH! It'll stay with those that knew him forever.
Gary was gentleman of the harp and a great ambassador for the Blues. Gary single-handedly taught me everything I know about playing in 3rd position. His workshops were fantastic and it is a real joy to be able to say I learned from the very best! Good night, Gary. You'll be sorely missed.
I first met Gary in '87 when we brought the Mannish Boys to play in Tulsa. I knew then that he was the best kept secret in blues harmonica. Gary hipped me to all the cool Dave Bartholomew and Louis Jordan approaches to harmonica playing. My last visit with Gary was at the Harmonica Masterclass in August. It was truly a gift to be able to reconnect with my dear friend and harmonica mentor. Gary, keep on blowing your soul, baby. David, thanks for posting this and for all your good works.
Without even knowing what we do now, I would look at this video and see a guy on something. His hands, mannerisms and slightly muddled speech give him away. So damn sad. This is not the Gary Primich I had the great great pleasure to meet in the late 90s in South Florida. All I can say is that heaven now has another GREAT harmonica player. Peace to his family.
I don't really like your comment. You probably didn't mean any harm. I just hurts me. Gary was one of my closest friends. The soul of the man was never ruined. He was suffering, but still as beautiful as ever... Don't want anyone to think less of him because of his disease, because that's what it is...
I knew Gary very personally since he was my brother-in-law and you can't imagine the hell we went through as a family trying to help the poor man out. It was a so sad. I remember that call we got at 1:00 am in the morning. My wife -- his sister -- knew right away. I guess we all did.
Thank you for postin this video. Gary was like a big brother to me. One of the most sensitive, intelligent, kind and sincere individuals I have ever met. I'm going to miss his friendship and support.
I had the extreme pleasure of being Garys bassman on tour in Europe last year with my band The Wildcards. He paid me the best compliments I have ever received and could ever hope to receive. A true friend and the best harp player the world has ever seen. We all glanced at each other many times on that tour in amazement, he sounded like a steam train barreling towards you! We miss you dude. Stay cool Gary, love ya man.
This is great. Gary tells you what moves him about the music and his deepest feelings about it and the harp, then he demonstrates what he was talking about with total perfection. That surely was the most expressive playing I have ever heard.
I toured with Gary last year with my band The Wildcards around Europe. We had a ball, Gary was truly awesome as a musician and a man. We never heard the harp played that well and never will again.
We recorded his song Hoodoo Preacher for our new album and he loved the version "more than his own", he was always kind and generous that way, always encouraging.
we've lost a good friend and the blues World has lost it's best harp player and songwriter.
Good to hear from you Jason. Gary will be missed. The interview is over an hour long and we get into some really cool topics... something for the future. Take care.

as a person, gary had the sweetest heart,
he was a trusting friend.
he always believed in me.
we did 5 cd cover sessions.
i was his photographer & friend.
we rarely hung out, but we connected over so many things.
this deeply saddens me, i am glad i can visit him here.....
