  • It's SCOTTISH Gaelic, there is a distict difference in language between this and Irish. lol, all I can think of is poor Alan MacDonald and the sound of his lungs filling with blood.

  • Does it GET any better than this? Haunting. I could listen to this forever. It evokes my very rich Scottish heritage and my lovely rellies there who we visit frequently. Wow. I watch Rob Roy with this particular part being my favourite. Has this woman got talent? I think so...

  • Shame this beautiful song was associated with the young guy being murdered in the Rob Roy picture.

  • Sad and beautiful. just like our lives !!

  • einfach nur die Stimme der Liebe...

  • I love celtic and irish music !

  • @MissBlanche14 this is scottish not irish you got your wires crossed

  • off course, the language matter almost not at all, just the feelings it evokes

  • Very Beautiful Song, indeed! All the British Isles are stacked and piled with great Cultures, and so many diffrent People and Landscapes. Without them, the worls would be a Place much less interesting and diverse. Thumbs up!

  • i got this from tomb raider legend :) beautiful song!

  • so much beatiful i like it

  • its so beatiful arr awesome really

  • I've read the lyrics in the true Gaelic form but am trying to learn the song for a family reunion (as we're Scottish! :) ) but as it's not my first language I was wondering if someone could possibly write it out phonetically and email it to me? Would be a great help!

  • Certainly time heals, but who needs what is left when the great love of this life is gone. I would rather be there with thee than wait for time to dull and numb what we had together. Certainly this is the song of a all those who lose the love that cannot be replaced. SO beautiful so intensely sad.

  • gaylic

  • this is beautiful i want this played at my funeral

  • this is the best version of this song ive heard so far.

    beautiful.

  • voice of an angel!Wow!

  • Ein unglaublich schönes Lied das Gänsehaut verschafft...my last song when i go to Valhalla...

  • @Endurodrums68

This is Celtic, specifically Scottish Gaelic, much like Irish Gaelic, Vahalla is Norse paganism not Celtic.

Celtic is more related to that of the Natives of North America and Hinduism, which they heavily influenced.

  • Really , and you know this to be true ? very interesting. to me it is song that makes me cry

  • @phr34kyy

    Okayyyy...thanx for the Info

  • wunderschöne Stimme

  • This song is about a Lady who lost her betrothed at sea, they were to be wed but he drowned when his ship sank due to a tempest, you can feel the pure angst and longing for her beloved, and how she longs to be with him, legend has it that she drowned herself a few months after it happened.(and after composing this song

  • @AyurvedaIreland : thanx so much for the translation of this wonderful song;-)

  • this just tears at your heart. You don't have to have seen the film to be moved by it.Sorrow and loss, something the Highlands-the Gaels- know all too well.Still, they endure.

  • @darkfey1963 Indeed, No Scot has ever suffered the way Highlanders suffer. Indeed, no one is genetically capable of suffering like them. They truly are sainted martyrs.

  • Yeah I know, but TR Legend was influenced by this

  • This song is purely simply magnificent. By hearing it, we want to settle at the top of a Scottish hill and to admire the landscape...

I like with all my heart!

  • This is from Tomb Raider, Legend. :)

  • Ailein Duinn is a lament dating back to1788, which as I recall is prior to Tomb Raider. ;)

  • @shadownor Just stumbled across that comment, may I say, funny as F3..

  • I so wish i could get my hands on this version. So many "remixes" out there. =( But this song is like balsam for the soul. Cant feel bad after it.

  • Nakazuul, this version of Ailein Duinn is on the Rob Roy soundtrack. I have it. I'm sure it can still be found out there.

  • This song is beautiful! There are so many beautiful Scottish and Irish songs.

  • this was totally in tomb raider legend!!!

  • This was the theme for Tomb Raider Legend!

  • How sorrowful I am Early in the morning rising Chorus (after each verse): Ò hì, I would go with thee Hì ri bhò hò ru bhì Hì ri bhò hò rinn o ho Brown-haired Alan, ò hì, I would go with thee If it is thy pillow the sand If it is thy bed the seaweed If it is the fish thy candles bright If it is the seals thy watchmen I would drink, though all would abhor it Of thy heart's blood after thy drowning
  • Thanks for the translation, love this song. Learned some gaelic when I was very young, this makes me want to learn properly.

  • @manicinsanity123 Thankx a million. Have always wanted to know the English words. Was I disappointed that the song was not sorrowful enough? No, I had a feeling it went something like that, after watching Rob Roy a dozen timesor more.

  • @manicinsanity123 - Sounds very "pagan like" I like it, that mysterious world in brittania before the "light of jesus" decided to come.

  • @Nautilus04 LOL blame it on jesus ....

  • @Jav089 - Well, his getting all the attention, I think he likes it.

  • You've spelled it wrong, but thanks for psting this. Good video.

  • Gura mise tha fo éislean Moch sa mhaduinn is mi g'éirigh Sèist: Ò hì shiùbhlainn leat Hì ri bhò hò ru bhì Hì ri bhò hò rinn o ho Ailein Duinn, ò hì shiùbhlainn leat Ma 's e 'n cluasag dhuit a ghaineamh Ma 's e leabaidh dhut an gheamainn Sèist: Ma 's e 'n t-iasg do choinlean geala Ma 's e na ròin do luchd-faire Sèist: Dh'òlainn deoch ge b' oil le càch e De dh'fhuil do choim 's tu 'n déidh do bhathadh Sèist:
  • Ah, thank you so much for the lyrics! :-D

  • @zwierzchnik The last stanzas are missing...

    Do you know them?

    Would love your help.

  • This is a very old Irish song about a woman grieving for a lost sailor

  • Close but no cigar Im afraid Poledrawolf. This Scottish Gaelic lament was in fact composed in the 1780s by a young lady by the name of Annie Campbell (Annag Chaimbeul) upon the death of her fiancee Alan Morrison(Ailean Moireasdan) during a storm at sea.Sadly Annie it is deemed took her own life, and her body was found on the same beach not far from where Alan was found a few months earlier.

  • He also died on their wedding night. When sad things happen to celts they really turn in to some beautiful songs. lol

  • It's not Irish it's Scottish. The Morrison and Campbell clans are in Scotland.

  • Scottish not Irish.

  • Do your research dude, this song is Scottish. Written for Ailean Moireasdan by Annag Chaimbeu, who was, as legend says, found dead on the shore where her dead lover washed up.

  • @poledrawolf typical irish, always trying to steal from another culture and lay claim to it.

  • Haunting song from the great 1995 film Rob Roy,sung by lovely Karen!!

  • Yes you are right its from Tomb Raider Legend

    nice nice

  • It's no from Tomb Raider Legend, the producers used it and remixed it for the game.

Same thing for Medieval 2 Britannia

  • do u think u could send me this, plz I absolutely love it

"If it is the fish your candles bright,

If it is the seals your watchmen..."

    aaah prettiful!

    ;)

  • ***** ohhh! Beautifulst!!! Thanks! *****

  • 'S Rhioghal Mo Dhream

  • TOMB RAIDER LEGEND!!! I know... not d 1st person to say this... but TOMB RAIDER LEGEND!!!

  • what about Tomb Raider Legend?

  • The main theme song of Tomb Raider Legend uses the sample of this song... prominently the first verse. This sample is also scattered everywhere else in the game, more obviously on the Peru Motorcycle Chase track and the Nepal track. In Tomb Raider Legend, this song is performed by a band call Capercaille or something like that...if my source is correct.

  • Yes johnhelvyakam, the band is called Capercaille. The band's singer is Karen Matheson. She was actually featured singing this in the movie, that lovely dark-haired woman who sings this at the party at the same time Eric Stolz is being murdered by Tim Roth is her. I lvoe this song - goosebumps time. :-)

  • So this is the same singer in TR Legend then? Hurrah!!!

  • Just amazing, beatutifull language :)!

  • to trismegistushermes: it´s a perfect translation. Thank You.

  • Truly amazing. as an American of Irish descent, i don't understand so many things. It seems so long gone from my families' memories. But you true Celts deserve so much credit: how so few ppl eminate such a massive culture is amazing to me, keep it alive please and I'll try to understand more fully. This song is so beautiful, and i dont care if the auspices is a video game or whatever. it stands for itself in beauty.

  • TOMB RAIDER LEGEND!!!

  • Omg the tomb raider music!

  • I just found out that this was the same song in the menu theme of Medieval 2 Total War: Britannia

It's so beautiful but a tragic story huh?

To watch the version I'm talking about, just type in youtube:

Medieval 2 Kingdoms Britannia Music - Dream of Albion

  • Dies sind die Highlands wie ich sie mir vorstelle.

Starkes Land, starke Leute und superstarke Musik

  • I learned a bit of German years ago in the the American Air Force, if you know English, is this a good translation? This is highlands like I lobethem.

Strong land, strong people and superstrong music?

  • Pardon me. Lobethem= love them

  • Brings tears to my eyes, i miss home, although ive been in Australia now for 42 years having left when i was 5, bonnie Scotland will always be my heart, Gaelic is still spoken in our family, oh how i love this song. TY4U & Posting Karen Matheson i love her "Sniff" A h-uile la sona dhuibh

's gun la idir dona dhuibh. 11T11

  • You should move back. Life's too short. ;-)

  • Me too, only been away 16 years so not as long as you, but this brings a tear to my eye. Played it recently at my Brothers funeral and then had a lament with a single piper, lovely stuff, my heart will always be in the highlands.

  • I love so much this song.

  • this music is beautiful when ur driving through scotland .makes me proud to be scottish.i'm fed up with tartan and neds and glasgow.

  • Ailein duinn ("Dark-haired Alan") is a lament that was written for Ailean Moireasdan ("Alan Morrison") by his fiancée, Annag Chaimbeul ("Annie Campbell"). In 1788, Ailean, a sailor, set off with his ship to Scalpay, Harris, where he and Annag would be married. In a tragic twist, the ship sailed into a storm and all on board were lost.

  • Annag was devastated and lost her will to live, dying several months later. Her body was later discovered on the beach, not far from where Ailean's body was found. Before she died, Annag composed this lament for her lost love.

  • What is this song about?

  • According to a legend it is a song written by a girl whose beloved man -a sailor died in the sea when he was on his way back home. She died few months later and her body was found on the beach near the place where her boyfriend's body was found.

  • Main theme of "Tomb Raider Legend" =)

    Beautiful

  • indeed

  • well done

    rhx for posting

  • i could not find this one version anywhere O.ò

  • It has a celtic essence :)

  • The most beautiful song I've ever heard...

  • my only regrette is not being able to comentte in gaelic

  • David ...I understand so much now ...and yet there is so much I will never understand

    Black Jelly Bean

  • She's my Scottish Professor's cousin! I just thought that was cool :)

(Its a Scottish literature class btw)

  • A mi niña le cantaba esta canción cuando era un bebé y se emocionaba como yo al escucharla. MUCHAS GRACIAS adhardehadres!

  • I absoulutly adore this song I to live in a different place then my homeland. I from Ireland but now I am in America. This reminds me so much of the past that I feel my eyes misting over.

  • im a mexican and i just have to say the music the voice and the sound is just beautiful it doesnt matter where it came from, i guess u guys are forgetting the most important thing we all are living in the same place we all are neiboors, we all are humans or at least i want to belive that greetings to all

  • true but i think some poeple are just expressing a connection with their ancestors. and with the celts it different with other cultures even mexicos because the celts were thrown into the wilderness and its difficult to find a connection so its good to hear music like this and find a connection. music is buetiful to all and this does truly express a connaction with the world that we all feel and the celts were particularly good at expressing it.

  • amen!

  • Just because you like the music doesnt mean somebody who has connection with the people who wrote it is wrong.

  • look at my celtic channel and you will see the connection we celts have from ireland, scotland, wales, cornwall, isle of mann,

    brittany,galizia and asturias

  • look at my celtic channel and you will see the connection we celts have from ireland, scotland, wales, cornwal l,isle of mann,

    brittany,galizia and asturias

  • born in scotland, aberdeen celtic music just stirs something in me, im so patriotic but.........i LIVE IN ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the worst part i dont speak gaelic thats one of my dreams to be able to speak this beautiful language.. if anyone can help id much appreciate it!.... ALBA GU BRATH!..... great vid by the way! :)

  • Just appreciate the song! GB history can be researched at the touch of a mouse.

    Good song eh?

  • hold onto your roots, it doesn't matter where you are born, if your celtic thats your blood, your DNA,your history.never understood when someone moves to another country(white) your ancestory goes down the pan. if you was asian and was born in america you would still be asian in the eyes of others. i envy that.

  • or spanish

  • This is total C**p...get your Facts Straight before posting...you Have my Ancestors as part of yours...NO WAY historically our families were bitter enemies...infact we had The Macgregor name & Tartan banned...long before Rob came around...Its an Insult to the Old Ones!

  • Oh my god. This song always, without fail makes me cry. I'm drying my tears right now. God I love the song and her voice.

  • Got to see Karen Matheson sing this at the Celtic festival in Lorient, France a few years ago. I was amazed by her voice. Would love to see her again.

  • Funny how everyone claims to be either irish or scottish, when they hear beautiful gaelic laments like this one!!!! or should I say claim to be irish, when in fact its scottish!!! come on people stop being so analytical and wet, the beauty is simply in the song, so just appreciate!!!!

  • going as far back as gaelic-stuff, the scots are just transplanted Irish. I love irish music but am proud to say my family is Welsh/English. My ancestors longbowed those taigs a long time ago..

  • Ummmm!!!! Your American!!!! and for someone who is English, and lives in Wales I would like to point out that like all Americans your grasp of historical facts are pretty flimsy. Trust me Welsh people also consider themselves Gaelic. I would like to point out that the term Gaelic is a term and not based on historical fact!!! meaning that Britain was populated by various cultures other considerable time, and therefore are divided between scot, welsh, irish and scottish!!

  • Yes, thank you Captain Obvious, forgive me for not detailing ALL of GB's history in one post..

  • Not ALL GB's history; just the basics, you know the OBVIOUS!!! Captain I don't have a clue what I'm talking about!!!

  • My brother in law is a Welsh master mariner and he doesn't consider himself Gaelic. Quite being so judgmental. A particularly annoying European trait.

  • im speechless.

  • Mathesson has a great voice almost as great as Mary Black, thanks for the posting...great pics in video...

  • there is nothing "almost" about either voice, in my opinion.

  • ma homeland is scotland

  • ALBA GU BRATH!!

  • Tiocfaidh ár lá !!!!!

    HAIL TO IRELAND !!!!!

  • lol this is a song in Scottish Gaelic, although its very similar to Irish Gaelic.

  • Alba Gu bra maybe?

Beautiful song, beautiful voice, beautiful country.

  • Australias very nice too, I'd love to see it.

  • I can't blame you. Because I love seeing it everyday.

  • I think the scots/Irish are very similar to the Australians. The people from Oz Ive met here in Scotland love the place. Similar humor and outlook on life. Whick part you from?

  • In Australia? Queensland. My dad is from Drumclog though. How about you?

  • almost right :) I used to write the same thing until i got corrected on bebo! its actually Alba Gu Brath......alba gu bra is how its pronounced apparently!

    are you scottish? :)

  • Yeah that makes sense coz the bleeding 'th's are silent and the bh sounds like v and Gaelic is just really hard to speak from reading it when it's spelt properly. In answer to you're question, look at my other comments.

  • my mum used to sing this song to me when i was a baby. it still stirs my irish blood.

  • That's kinda funny when you realize its actually a sad tale about two Scottish lovers.

But I agree, any woman singing me to sleep with this song would get my blood stiring as well. ;)

  • Beautiful pictures to grace the best voice on the planet!

  • awesome Very well put togeather and true Irish were all cut from the same cloth Now if we could just see eye to eye

  • i want t learn this before i leave

  • this song from Rob ROY is just too lovely..

I could hear it a hundred times and on and on again...

    thank you for sharing!

  • This is in Gaidhlig(Scots Gaelic)the Ulster dilaect of Gaelige(Irish Gaelic) is very similar!

  • this song always brings me peace at the most difficult times

  • this song was on tomb raider legend!

  • yep thats why I love it ^^

  • The first version of this song was written in 1788 by Annag Chaimbeul when her lover was lost at sea. This version is the song was sung by Karen Matheson on Rob Roy and it is in fact the most popular and the most incorrect version of the orignal song. The more orignal was sung by Karen Matheson on a previous album apart from Rob Roy.

  • Thankyou, Aisliq9. Both are AWESOME!!!

  • Aisliq9, can you do me a big favor and send me the lyrics in English??

  • in the search window type in:

    meav ailein duinn

click that and then click on more under about this video and there is the english translation

  • Thankyou,KOOL!!

  • It is a sad song. The words were written by a woman in 1788 after she lost her fiance at sea. Shortly after she wrote it her body was found in the surf. Suicide??
