HAHA! Bringing a backboard down shows how "big and tough" you are. If you bring down a backboard, it's basically showing how big you are and that you're able to bring down something that is made to basically NOT break. It's more of a "you wanna piece of me?" type move to the other team. "Look what I can do, biatch!" But it's illegal to do it on purpose.

It doesn't happen a lot in basketball and when it does happen, everybody freaks out because it's cool to see it happen.

2)is it a kind of underhand "fuck you" to the other team?

3)do they get punished for it?

1) Not that often, at least in the NBA it probably hasn't happened since the early 80s.

2) No because it happens spontaneously.

3) Back in the late 70s and 80s the NBA made a rule to punish guys who broke it, since Darryl Dawkins kept trying to break it on purpose. After that they made a stronger backboard.

The Shaq thing happened in the 90s, but that wasn't a breaking of the glass.

In the 1993 season, some guy dunked it and the glass on the backboard completely cracked, but it didnt fall. He got fined cos he appeared to do it on purpose. Its showed on the Shaq breaking the backboard full version
