every time you attack the foe why does your pokemon take damage if the foe is not attacking them?

@ContrerasKiller310 Oh, you must be talking about my Mewtwo then. Well, it's holding an item called "Life Orb". The item increases the power of any attacking moves that its holder uses by a multiple of x1.3 extra damage (so the item gives your Pokemon a little extra power boost to attack with).

However, the downside from it is that your Pokemon is forced to sacrifice 1/10 of it's H.P. per attack that it successfully pulls off. So, that's why Mewtwo lost a little bit of it's health each turn.

@okeanos317 Not quite. If the flinch didn't happen, Modest Nature Max Sp, Atk. Mewtwo + Life Orb with Psychic would've done the job just as fine, which I had on the Mewtwo (speculating that he had the Yache Berry on Shaymin in a previous battle that we had around the time). However, if Darkrai had woken up on it's 3rd Sleep Turn, I would've surely lost, naturally.

This was quite an old battle though. Haha. So many possibilities as to what may have happened.
