If we assume that the Bible has full authority and therefore learning its truths is how we grow in our personal relationship with God, then why is "practical" learning necessary? (Not that its bad thing) But why would academic study of scripture and theology not be sufficient? I may be confused as to exactly what he means by practical life-related learning.
Tim Keller shows an appreciation for a classical education along with a need to put that learning into practical application where the rubber hits the road. I especially appreciated his exhortation to be reading non-Western theological works. 90% of the church today is found outside of N. America. We need to be well informed about what our brothers and sisters in the rest of the church are saying and doing.

@BrosephAE I think what he means is not just studying the readings, but putting them into practice.
