Daniel Pipes is very good in many ways. I once was willing to totally support his perspective. The near decade since 9/11 has convinced me otherwise. The rise of Western totalitarianism might have caused a revival of totalitarian sentiment w/ Moslems. Islam was fully totalitarian long before Western totalitarianism. Islam's imperial history has made it intrinsically totalitarian. W/o the Islamic state, Islam can not exist. Islam is essentially politcal.
SLAUGHTERING PALESTINIANS YEAR AFTER YEAR AT A RATIO OF "8 to 1" AND THEN ASKING PEOPLE TO BELIEVE ISRAEL IS THE VICTIM OF `TERRORISM AND ANTI~SEMITISM IS SIMPLY LAUGHABLE BY ANY RATIONAL, LOGIC RELIGION OR CREED!. NO EXCUSE IS CREDIBLE FOR THESE LEVELS OF USA & UK SPONSORED STATE TERRORISM. NOT EVEN THE JEWISH TORAH ALLOWS KILLING BEYOND AN EYE FOR AN EYE!.

this is a problem that was created by the u.s.and the u.n.(same thing)by creating a jewish state and setting aside the palestinians. This was done because the u.s.a is runned by jews. every maintream media is owned by jews, banking system...etc. taxpayers money winds up in israel. thats why we cant put together new orleans , yet we can send israel millions a year
how naive of you, every religion is imperialistic with one goal in mind.the u.s.a is an imperialistic country and by the way islam hates jews and jews hate islam, thats the way it is, thats the ways it has been since ancient history
True, people were hit hard by katrina and the Bush administration failed to send immediate help. Yet I don't think they were ever late sending financial aid to israel. America needs to stop sending money to israel and use it to improve itself!
What is this man really trying to accomplish? If his assertion that radical Islam is dangerous, then why does he support all acts of instigation - like crushing Palestine. Seems like a great way to energize radical Islam extremism. Zionists = Crusaders = Extremists
The way to get rid of terrorist groups like Al-Queda is not the kind of all-out war against the Middle East that Mr. Pipes is advocating. Getting rid of terrorist groups requires lots of police work, and also diplomacy that makes conditions unfavorable to the terrorist groups by starting to remove their grievances.
adlellturi, I think your commenting that the solution is simply policing, diplomacy and removing grievances reveals a superficial understanding of who the "Islamists" or "jihadists" are and what they wish to achieve, ultimately, some of which Pipes, here, refers to. One of their grievances is that Israel exists. Shall we remove that "grievance"? That won't be enough. As Mr. Pipes said, they want to achieve much more. I think your first mistake, though, is thinking the problem's just terrorism.
So then, in your opinion, what is the true problem that the US faces in regard to radical Islamists? In your view, what are the true dimensions of the problem that the US faces? Or do you view this as solely an issue of the US? Clarify your statement.
adellutri, Radical Islamists, or jihadists, etc., have an ideology, grounded in Islam, itself, which seeks to transform Muslim societies into Taliban-like regimes and, ultimately, a caliphate, things very distant from democracy and universal h. rights. Beyond this, their goal, again, based in Islam, is to expand the amount of territory in the world governed by sharia law. Non-muslims so governed won't have it so good, to say the least. To learn more, read Mary Habeck's book, Knowing the Enemy.
Sure, 12ut5, Radical Islamists do in fact have an ideology like that, and plans like that. But, so what? They're a small, marginal group without significant support in any State anywhere. Terrorist actions are the height of their powers. The best way to fight them is by use of police powers to directly attack them and dismantle their networks, and by working to remove the problems and greivances which send people into their ranks in the first place.
adellutri, Considering what the jihadists want to achieve, and seeing how their ideology is a threat to democracy, h. rights, and muslim and non-muslim countries and people alike, how much of a threat are they in terms of their capability to actually do what they want to do? Critical question. Short answer: at this point, whatever the precise number is of people who hold the jihadist ideology, there's too many of them, now, and both Muslims and non-Muslims must, repudiate, what they stand for.
That is the exact right question, 12ut5. How much of a real threat are they? And the real answer is: much less than they are made out to be. They are a small, marginal group without majority support in any State anywhere. The best ways to fight them take their true nature into account. They are not an Empire, or even a State. They are a small group of non-state terrorists. They are mobilized by actual greivances, and they feed on Chaos.
Knowing that they are a small group of non-state terrorists, the way to attack them is with international police work to find them, arrest them, and disable their networks.
Knowing that they are motivated by rational greivances against the US and "the West", the way to diminish their support is to help fix these greivances.
Knowing that they feed on Chaos, follows that the way to help them is to invade Iraq and create chaos, mass death, and millions of refugees.
Also, when I say to work on their greivances, I don't mean to agree with their hatred of Jews and Israel. That would be absurd and wrong. I mean to:
-Re-start a CREDIBLE peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
-Stop occupying lands that Sunni Muslims consider holy, such as Saudi Arabia.
-Stop funding terrorists! Osama Bin Laden was trained and funded by the CIA during the Reagan years. The CIA is reportedly funding the MEK in Iraq and Jundallah in Pakistan now, against Iran.
Most Muslims around the world don't hate the US at all. Or they didn't before the current occupation of Iraq. There are definitely terrorist groups such as Al-Queda, who wish to destroy the US. But if you look objectivly at Al-Queda, they are a small group, the limits of their power are terrorism.
why dont you put some evidence to your argument buddy? whats priceless is your pathetic attempt of a counter-argument to us anti-pipes as you like to call us.
Pipes spent most of his career prior to 1991 trying to scare people about how the USSR would attack at any moment. When that turned out to be total bullshit, he switched to advocating on behalf of wars against middle easterners, in Iraq and elsewhere.
When 9/11 happened, Pipes and the rest of his political group, the Neoconservatives, pushed for the US to attack Iraq, and have been pushing for the US to attack Iran too. The Iraq war that Pipes has helped to start has killed nearly 800,000 Iraqis, according to some estimates.
The 9/11 hijackers killed about 3000 Americans. That is a catastrophe. But the US invasion and occupation of Iraq has killed something like 800,000 Iraqis, and nearly 4000 American soldiers to date. That is a far worse catastrophe.
While jews were being persecuted in eastern europe, they were living prosperously in the Ottoman empire with their Muslim neighbors. It's time to get out of your ignorant shell and take a closer look at whose being oppressed and who is not. For the sake of human race, instead of selecting what should be destroyed, lets quit the biasedness and talk in less violent terms. You wanna destroy Islam and it is Muslims that are being called terrorists. What is the matter with you???
It is a terrible form of hypocrisy. The neoconservatives pretend to be defending Israel and Jewish people, but in reality they just want to demonize Muslims and attack their countries.
He obviously means he's anti-Muslim. Just as people in Nazi Germany were anti-Semitic. Judaism is not a race either. And to the guy who said he hates Islam and the Quran, thanks for your input, it speaks volumes of your intelligence.
This guy should marry Ann Coulter, they'd be great together.
Saying that he is anti-Muslim is the easy way out. In one word he is 'Islamophobic' - right?
Phobia indicates irrational fear - but what is coming out of Islam today is real.
It seems any discussion about Islam's radical aspects, are put down to Islamophobia. It is as if, Muslims are using their religious status as a bully, to stifle critics and push their agenda - unhindered, which is to one day control the world with Islam.
I am much more afraid of the radical Christianists than of the radial Islamists. Both want to kill me, a secular American. But the radical Christianists are much more powerful.
Nazis would tell you that you were totally wrong. They had invented and found a million different 'crimes' that Jews had committed. Look at Nazi propaganda. They were just exactly as convinced that Jews were the problem as Mr. Pipes and the Neocons are convinced that Arabs and Persians are the problem.
Mr. Pipes's Jewishness is not the important factor. It is his belief in the ideology of neoconservatism. The neoconservatives wish to create continual war, yes, but it has nothing to do with their religious beliefs, and everything to do with their lust for power.
