I guess I could see why Star Trek left-out the REAL classes of starships in this battle, like the Cheyenne, the New Orleans, and the Firebrand class starships, where the novel Star Trek Emissary had named-out which ones were to be destroyed in battle. They were not shown here (exept the Melbourne, Saratoga, a Oberth, Amabassador, and Nebula class starships), to make room for the more fun part of DS9, with the Dominion, and all the ships.
@Ashenion22 Actually, they were not shown here because novels are not canon. Also, not of those ships you mention were ever made into full-scale models, which is good because those kitbashes were, in my opinion, ugly.
I always felt the writers of Star Trek were trying to be too much like Babylon 5 when they created Deep Space 9. I always felt the two were completely different and that they should never have tried to emulate Babylon 5. I bet I'm going to get a whole lot of fanboy rage for this comment, ha.
I've done an excellent video to the Massacre of Wolf 359, if anyone could tell me any Federation starships that were destroyed in either STTNG or DS9 series, prior to the Dominion Wars, single-out 'USS' name vessels, I'm trying to do a 39-starship battle, I would appreciate it.
always wondered that myself....but there must be a reason cause if it were that easy....there would be no stopping the borg and they would spread faster and faster outwards from their space like a plague of lucusts.
Yeah, one of my issues with the Borg...in their effort to create the "ultimate bad guys" they kinda wrote themselves into a corner. There really is no reason the borg should have lost. Especially since they had time travel capability....another thing that pisses me off and why I don't like watching First Contact.
The idea is a form of hive mentality where the further you are from a bee hive the less bees the are. The borg beieved the federation technology was no match and this is clear at the battle of sector 001 in first contact where only a large group of new ships including soveriegn, defiant, akira, etc only just managed to. This is also partly as a result of picards knowledge of the borg and there weaknesses from once being part of the collective.
hi guys as much as i love star trek, i hate to upset you all but it aint real!!!!. "if they had sent 2 borg cubes they would of suceeded" yeah thats as maybe but it would of been a very short film!?
Remember in First Contact, the Enterprise was 2 hours away when the Borg started blowing the fleet away. They could have had hundreds of ships there, but only a handful were left by the time the Enterprise got there...
what i dont get is why the borg dont send like, 50 cubes instead of just one to earth...granted this one had probably been off on its own for a long time, but then in first contact, even if they had just 2 cubes they probably would have succeeded.
The Borg didn't consider Humans a threat and they didn't find our technology to be amazing enough for them to send a massive fleet. They were probably just using us to test new ways of assimilation. Like how they used time travel the second time. Anyways, they were still busy doing things in the Delta Quadrent. Once they expanded out more they would have probably just overwhelmed us with hundreds of cubes like they do with all the other species.
Man, the Federation people are just IDIOTS. Why are they sending their 49-strong fleet of ships at the Cube two or three at a time? No wonder they lost.
This was the first encounter with the Borg. They went into that battle clueless, then given the fact that they already knew of the plan since they had picard the fleet never had a chance. as seen in First Contact they were more prepared and had defiant class vessels, but We never found out how many ships were present/lost
Oh yeah, I am writing a book on The Best of Both Worlds, even though it is a old episode, it is also one of my best childhood episodes.
It has the attack on Jouret IV, the USS Lalo being attacked, even having the fleet attacking the Cube at Wolf 359, with a few added scenes on the Borg vessel, Enterprise-D, and the fleet.
Borg lasers do not harm ships THROUGH their shields. Borg ships use tractor beams to drain ships of their shields and THEN they use lasers to damage the ship when their shield is down.
The Borg's standard tactic is to use a high energy tractor beam to damage enemy shields and disrupt warp fields, then to use the laser cutting beam to slice the ship up for assimilation. If a ship is viewed as a direct threat then it is immediately destroyed with the cutting beam once the shields are down.
This is also the episode where we see the Enterprise trying to outrun the Borg at its first-time maximum speed of warp 9.65, though the Borg were still gaining.
I know, but it's a 500 character count per post so all I quoted was him saying to engage warp. What does it matter if he says warp 8 or some other number?
because of the budget restraints they already had the blue effect readily available like that. or it was because of picards knowledge or something who knows
bloodthroe is right. on the TNG episode "Q who?" the enterprise has a section cut out of its saucer section. the enter prise somehow survives this weheras the miranda class shown does not. possibly because the miranda class ship is really old.
It's a tractor beam. The cutting beam is a seperate beam.
At 0:07 you clearly see two different beams attacking the ship. One is the large blue tractor beam, the other is the thin green cutting laser.
After the ship is destroyed you only see the large blue tractor beam being fired again. This is because the other Star Fleet ships still have their shields up and Star Fleet shields are highly resistent to lasers. The Borg have to bring down their shields before using the cutting laser.
I guess I could see why Star Trek left-out the REAL classes of starships in this battle, like the Cheyenne, the New Orleans, and the Firebrand class starships, where the novel Star Trek Emissary had named-out which ones were to be destroyed in battle. What I do not understand why only send one borg vessel to sector 001 ? If one can cause so much damage just think what a hundred could have done?

@bmwsux4 but why....if only 1 can do just as much?

Yeah, me too.
Seeing starfleet war tactics would be way cool.
If they bring it back in a tv series, i seriously doubt. Then I would like to see it in game, with way cool graphics.

Well, get Bridge Commander, download the Kobayashi Maru mod, download some more ships and you're ready to relive Wolf 359. :)

Interesting fact: the mars defense perimeter drones are actually the submarine "red october" from the movie "The hunt for Red October"

Finally. Proof that Borg lasers can indeed harm ships through their shields.
chitoryu12 4 years ago
Borg lasers do not harm ships THROUGH their shields. Borg ships use tractor beams to drain ships of their shields and THEN they use lasers to damage the ship when their shield is down.
Bloodthroe 4 years ago
....drain shields with tractor beams? Aside from the fact that this is pretty much scientifically assraped, do you have any, you know, PROOF?
chitoryu12 4 years ago
That's what they do in the show. Tractor beams damage ship's shields. How is it scientifically assraped for tractor beams to hurt ships' shields?
Bloodthroe 4 years ago
The Borg's standard tactic is to use a high energy tractor beam to damage enemy shields and disrupt warp fields, then to use the laser cutting beam to slice the ship up for assimilation. If a ship is viewed as a direct threat then it is immediately destroyed with the cutting beam once the shields are down.
Episodes: "Q Who?" and "Emissary"
Bloodthroe 4 years ago
In fact, Q Who? is on youtube for your viewing pleasure. Just search for Q Who? Part 3.
Worf: They've locked onto us with some form of tractor beam. That beam is draining our shields.
Riker: If they pull down our shields, we're helpless.
Captain: Engage warp.
Ensign: That beam is holding us here.
Data: Shields are down.
At this point the Borg ship fires a second beam. This is the laser cutting beam.
Worf: A type of laser beam is slicing into the saucer section.
Bloodthroe 4 years ago
Ah. Thank you.
chitoryu12 4 years ago
Bloodthroe, the captain says:
Captain: Warp eight, any heading, engage.
This is also the episode where we see the Enterprise trying to outrun the Borg at its first-time maximum speed of warp 9.65, though the Borg were still gaining.
