Stories like this are always sad how good people die too young and in bad ways And the shitty people who walk this planet and can never be erradicated. I miss people like Lou Gherig but he will never be forgotten.
People must realize this was an early T.V. show and the quality of T.V. has improved a lot since then. More than you can say for the programming. Anyway, please realize this is an early T.V. series, and NOT a movie. If you want to watch some good movies on Gehrig, there are 2 full length ones, one with Gary Cooper and one with Edward Herrmann. The Cooper one, Pride of the Yankees, is very good.
The live anthology series of the 50's used up material so much they redid movies of Hollywood's greatest period, or at least redid the stories as here. The quailty was not good but they had to put a show on. It seems traditonal that Lou Gehrig be played by someone who didn't much resemble him or a baseball player- Gary Cooper, Wendell Corey and Edward Franklin. Wayne Morris, Dick Foran or later Jeff Bridges or Kurt Russell would have been better choices.
ALS is a creeping disease. Little by little, day by day, a person loses strength. It is no wonder that No one , including Lou knew what was happening to him. I lost a relative from this disease. He did not know what was going on either until the disease had progressed to the point where He had to see a neurologist. I remember His saying that 3 years before He was diagnosed with ALS, something weird was going on with his legs. Weird disease. Lou Gehrig was a great player indeed!
Sure it's a hokey TV version from 1956. "Pride" was from 1943 and a great film. Still, this was from the TV series "Climax" which ran from 1954-1958. It basically retold popular stories as well as newer ones including "Casino Royale" the very first James Bond book and thus the first James Bond actor: Barry Nelson. Anyway, notice the "Professor" from Gilligans Island in this show too. So, corny, but cinema history and nostalgia.
@EvilDOOER I -thought they did... i was called "Pride of the Yankees" and starred Gary Cooper. It is in my opinion that no one could ever do this role justice or play the role as Cooper did... perhaps that's why no one has ever attempted to do it again.

Gehrig was better than Ruth. Ruth would have retired in 1930 if Gehrig wasn't hitting behind him. Its just a shame Gehrig had to quit early.

Jean Hagan has a very 50s hairstyle going on for a story set in 1939. Cute though. And Wendall looks far too old to play Gehrig.

This a story which I think should be told by Hollywood on a grand scale.
Lou was a hell of a ball player... Sad he was before my time, and I never got to see him play live.
He could have been better then the Babe if it wasn't for the fact he got so sick...
