It has to suffer its ass of to survive, being on the edge of starvation all the time. When in "captivitity" (read: civilisation) they can become 12 years old. In the wild they never live longer than 3 or 4 years. That should say enough. If the otter could choose, I bet it would choose civilisation over the wild any day. I know I would.

This little guy won't learn any necessary life skills living in someone's house, and he needs access to fresh water and fish to thrive. You DO realize that the person who posted this video is a professional animal handler/trainer at an animal park, right? The otter is being house trained to get it accustomed to human interaction. Yes you are correct, as they get older, the otter will show more and more characteristics of a wild animal, but rest assured that this animal is going to a good home. A zoo...

Your cats and dogs started out this way. =) I'm not so sure he's a pet anyways. I would argue that otter is having a GREAT time in that house as opposed to filthy cold natural environments where it must fight to survive. Who says it likes that? My cat is almost 20 and seems to have lived a very happy life, so I reckon there's 2 sides to the coin. Obviously this is NOT a cat, though. But same principles apply.
