Respect to the writer of this tune is correctly due. But, Don't discredit this fantastic rendition performed by one best of the tenors, and entertainers, whose life is depicted in this song he performed so well. Most of us have no idea what motivated the writer to pen these lyrics. However, many of us know the story of David Ruffin through the Temptations, and his struggles after leaving them. David Ruffin did NOT write this, my Dad Jan Crutchfield did.  David did as usual a messed up version because that was all he was capable of doing, he was always stoned and way out there. If he wanted to sing it because he liked it, then so be it but the crazy man didn't write it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@l7916666 You know great songs are often done in several different genres by several different artists. That is the hallmark of a great tune. Your father used a chordal progression that lends itself to jazz, pop, country, blues, and R&B. As a writer I am sure he was aware of that.
