@jiminiflix How can people claim to know anything about God when they know nothing about the universe?
It annoys me when religous people belief to know the truth. Or show me that line in any holy book of a religion where the core of Jupiter is described accurately.
Jupiter "creates its own auras?" You need to define that much more clearly. I mean technically, Earth creates its own auras too, its just that those are caused by solar material. So we are looking for the "cause" of the auras on Jupiter as well as what is inside. Otherwise great job in bringing science to people.
@geraldfields71 You are more than welcome my friend, and I couldn't agree with you more. We are part of all of this, "up there stuff", made from it even. :) I think you'd agree that we very lucky to be living in a time were we can begin to understand some of it.
@ReidakkDrifter Remember now, you can pull images out of much of the electromagnetic spectrum and Juno's Microwave radiometer can see a whole lot deeper into the planet than a standard visible light or near-infrared camera/filters. Galileo and the Cassini's flyby did an excellent job there but the aim is to see more that just the surface cloud details. :)
@ReidakkDrifter Which in fact will not be missed. :) JunoCam (or JCM) which is a visible-light camera/telescope, meaning you/we will have those beautiful high resolution images. On closest approaches JunoCam could achieve 15 km/pixel resolution from 4300 km, while Hubble has taken images of up to 114 km/pixel from 600 million km. :)
Don't get me wrong, this is awesome. But it would be better if we would explore planets and moons that we could actually land on. Let's focus on Mars, Triton, Titan and others, if possible.
@Makrozon :) They? We? are focusing on Mars, Curiosity's landing there next year & currently Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is sending utterly amazing images back. Suggest u head over to the website & be dazzled by the science going on. Triton's a major mission to embark on, it would take years of planning & a number of years to get there.
@Makrozon Oh yes & Titan & the others, well there is the Titan Saturn System Mission (TSSM) which was being planned along with Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) but it has priority ahead of TSSM but these are a long way off. They were looking at an envisaged launch date of September 2020 and not actually getting out there until 2029. Its going to take four gravity assists, Earth-Venus-Earth-Earth to get out there. A long time I know but keep in mind now, we live in a large solar system! :)
@yourTylerDurden Titan has ice, but its far too cold for liquid water. What it does have is Hydrocarbon lakes! Methane and ethane that form rivers and lakes on Titan's surface. Some think it might be possible for methanogenic life to form, these might consume atmospheric hydrogen and be creatures that take in H2 in place of O2 & react it with acetylene instead of glucose, and produce methane instead of carbon dioxide. Who knows really? We need a probe there to really see what's going on. :)
@PacalB ah yes good one, i had it confused with Enceladus. Methanogenic life = cerebral erection. what a concept. there is just too much organic matter out there in its range of temps, pressures and interactions for there not to be life in abundance. then there's everything we cant imagine. the universe is the one true miracle.
@yourTylerDurden Agreed friend. And then there's the possibility that this universe is just one of infinite universes. I mean the fact is historically, each time we've come to what we "think" is our boundary, the universe [possibly multi-verse] throws us a curve ball. :)
@PacalB so true, in universal terms the monkeys have only just left the trees, but as you elaborated and as carl sagan has said, we are the universe contemplating itself. quite literally. i do wish a greater number of people considered this and integrated it into their lives, i believe it would be a very different place.
@justsad991 No that is not quite true, Nasa's Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn flew through icy plumes emanating from ice volcanoes on moon Enceladus and detected negatively charged water molecules, this is a clear sign that a underground sea exists.
As for water on the Mars, the Moon and Titan. Mars, well it is in the form of permafrost and polar caps, there are no bodies of liquid water, the average pressure & temperature is far too low. The Moon, no atmosphere and Titan too cold.
@fireinthesky00 Hey, there's plenty of other stuff going on. :) Example: The rover "Curiosity" will be landing on the surface of Mars at the Gale Crater between August 6 and August 20 in 2012. Great science will be done so keep track of that. :)
@geraldfields71 No chance of anything like that happening from anything we can produce. You see, when the comet Shoemaker Levy 9 collided with Jupiter in July 1994, the estimated release of energy was about equivalent to 6,000,000 megatons of TNT. Jupiter didn't blow up back then, so I think we can safely say; "we're safe with anything we send into Jupiter or do". :)

They should put a camera on Juno so it can take photos of Jupiter like Cassini did on Saturn, those were just fantastic photos.
