  • god this is KRAP! oh peter god

  • @pipa123100 What was crap? Because it sounds to me like he played it note perfect, so all you could be complaining about is the song. Now, considering that he has uploaded a good many different songs, just listen to them. Or better still, listen to something totally different!

Unless of course you DO mean the way he played it was crap, in which case, upload a video of you doing it better..... or just shut up....

  • it awful. :(

  • Where did u get the sheet music?

  • Nice video and sound. Thanks.

  • Rev. Ryan,

are you using a " c " whistle and playing in the key of " F " ? To be in tune with you, I used an " F " whistle but had to play an octave higher. It did not sound as good so high pitched. Please reply if you're not too busy. Thank you.

  • 'Tis a gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free,

'Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be.

And when we find ourselves in the place just right,

It will be in the valley of love and delight.

    When true simplicity is gained,

To bow and to bend we will not be ashamed.

To turn, turn will be our delight,

'Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.

  • This is my new favorite version of this song. Wow.

  • I went to Catholic school my whole life and I looooved when ever we sung this song at mass. Im so learning this. Great job.

  • I think this is your best piece so far. Thanks.

  • What kind of whistle are you playing?

  • Hey Ryan: Have you ever tried playing the fife? I know that the fingering is quite similar to the tin whistle.

    Gorgeous song btw.

    :)

  • I had heard once that this song is of Shaker origin. Do you know if this is true?

  • It says that in my piano lessons book

  • yep it is, written in 1848. if you want to read more google "simple gifts" and it should be the sixth one down.

  • Quaker I believe. idk if they came up with it.... but they're known for it

  • @mojave19

Englishman Sydney Carter adapted it in 1963 from a Shaker tune called "Simple Gifts."

  • Ryan - Question on technique. I may have missed this in your posted lesson but relating to finger movement, I've noticed on youtube that you, Joannie Madden, Pat Tierney, and even Hatao all have very demonstrative finger movements, especially on ornamentation. I'm self taught and my intuition was to play fingers close to the whistle to conserve movement thinking I'd be faster that way. But I've struggled with muddy ornaments. How critical is "broad finger movements in having "crisp" playing?

  • Thanks a million times and God bless your work.

  • I love this song .. by Alison Krause ( i don't know if that's how you spell it ) and Yoyo Ma ( dunno howta spell it either )

  • Actually, I believe it was written by Sydney Carter, its a hymn song.

  • @FrantikFilms Syndey Carter came up with "The Lord of the Dance" lyric. The tune "Simple Gifts" was originally a Shaker hymn.

  • You can't find an O'Riordan at a store mate, I don't even think he's making them anymore. Best bet is to check the sales forum on chip & fipple.

  • wonderful! just lovely, as always!! :-)

  • I think this song is in my sheet music book for the tin whistle.

  • This is a perfect example of my view that music is the voice of GOD most discernable.

  • Really enjoyed that, thanks for sharing with us.

    Frosty in Canada

  • Wow! So sweetly played, lots of emotion. Like Martin Hayes' fiddling. Can't do better than that.
