Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a small town in present-day Udmurtia, formerly province of Vyatka in the Russian Empire, to a family with a long line of military service. His father, Ilya Petrovich Tchaikovsky, was an engineer of Ukrainian descent who served as a lieutenant colonel in the Department of Mines[4] and manager of the famed Kamsko-Votkinsk Ironworks.[5] His grandfather, Petro Fedorovych Chaika, emigrated from Nikolaevka (near Poltava).
The beginning piece in this is my fave . Cello player :-) . Remembering many a performance anxiously waiting for the oboe to finish. One of the best cello spotlights ever written!!!

Me and my sister dance around the living room on a daily basis and this is one of our favourite songs to ballet dance to! (but we are terrible... well I'm terrible, she's pretty good)
2 people need to get whacked in the face with a baseball bat, curb stomped and then get boiled alive. And then after that, they need to have their right arm ever so slowly get sawed off with a chainsaw, then have it get cut up and then have them eat it. After they eat their right arm, we will take their children, boil THEM alive into human stew, and have these 2 people eat their own children and then drink their tears after they're all collected in the cup that was held underneath their eyes.
I am Zeus, Lord of the Lords, and I listen to this every morning while I enjoy my breakfast...By the way Poseidon what the hell are you doing here? Haven't I sent you to go calm the seas after the tsunami in Japan?
before the ballet, the orchestra stands and the conductor bows. the audience claps. me? i stand up and start screaming and cheering. my mom: "stephanie sit down! this is NOT a rock concert!" >:(
Easily some of the most enjoyable, romantic, brilliant, lovely and spectacular music the world has ever known. Tscaikovsky has made the world much richer because of his brilliance!!
@Theaterke Not really. I don't feel to be in any tail even very fairy :-) But indeed, it is the great piece of music. I've just realized that Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky is the most "American" music created by Russian :-)
I have adored all of the music in The Nutcracker since as long as I can remember. Thank you, Grandma, for taking me to The Nutcracker Ballet at Lincoln Center every New Year's eve when I was a kid and helping me to appreciate real music!! :)
So funny how much variety there is in my taste of music :p What I am loving: Tcaikovsky, Justin Bieber, Micheal Jackson, Edvard Grieg, Britney Spears, Eminen, Kurt Nilsen, Lady gaga and a LOT of other artists...
This piece, Swan Lake and Serenade For Strings are probably the best classical and melodic pieces ever written. Best pieces in music history even. That's why Tchaikovsky is my favorite composer.
Love the Tchaikovsky but not in love with the conducting. Too much ppp to fff and back again. Peter knew what he was doing. Excellent orchestra, over-interpreted. Thanks for the post!

YES. Christmas is not complete until you've heard at least these two songs.
And I will love this conductor forever for drawing out the last few notes in the Waltz of the Flowers, rather than rushing through them as too many conductors tend to do. It's just not as satisfying and dramatic without that heart stopping "DA da da DA DAAAAAAH...."
