wow!!! this is incredible video quality for 20 years ago. This is like a time machine to be able to see the great Lionel Hampton play up close and personal. I feel like I'm there!! Thanks for sharing this amazing video
Amazing to see the legend who played in the Benny Goodmen Sextet in the late 30's early 40's relive one of his classics from that era all those years later.
Give it up for a Jazz Legend and King of Jazz- Lionel Hampton this was a magical documentary and opportunity to record music history RIP - Lionel Hampton - you were always a class act and will be remembered- thanks for the opportunity to capture some Jazz music documentary history. Your friend BS Cactus
Pure Joy!!!And one of the true harmonic geniuses of jazz!!And if you can,get ahold of "Silver Vibes"(which is packaged with "Golden Vibes" on the Collectibles label-originally Columbia)His version of "Blue Moon" is absolutely astounding!!
When Hamp saw security trying to muscle people back into their "seats", he stopped the band cold in mid-flight, stepped up to the mic and said something to the effect of "Let these people dance! I travelled 3,500 miles from New York to play for these folks and, if you all aren't going to let everyone dance, we're just gonna pack up & leave!"
Security relented, Hamp played and a flat BALL was had! I'll never forget that day as long as I live. :)
You all should've been at this show - the First Annual Phoenix Jazz Festival at Highland Park, Phoenix, Arizona, Sunday, April 2nd, 1989. Hamp and his band just KILLED!
The man's energy and enthusiasm on that stage was truly something to behold - remember that this is just 18 days before Hamp's 81st birthday.
He even stopped the band cold during one number because security wouldn't let folks stand up & dance.
i think the best thing about lionel hamptons playing is how obvious it is that he wouldn't rather doing anything else, just look at that mile wide grin
Was this filmed at the Jazz Festival at Highland Park in Phoenix, AZ on April 2, 1989?????
I was THERE!!!!! (age 17) It was there that I met Hamp & asked him to autograph an armful of his 78's - and he did, with a crowd around him, about an hour before he took the stand that day.
Hamp stopped the band in the middle of a number because security wouldn't let folks dance in the isles. :D
Great day and thanks for keeping this video up long enough for me to see - awesome memories!
In terms of views, jazz is at the lower rungs. All you have to do is look at acts like Coldplay or even Rick Astley (Rick-Roll) - We're talking 20 million plus views for some of their songs, and up to 100 million views for the combined songs for some groups. Jazz may be becoming more popular on You Tube, but in the mainstream it's a dog. You don't hear of jazz musicians pulling in crowds of tens of thousands of fans for one performance. Sad.
One of my most watched videos on youtube- Dan Horn Still is number one but Jazz is getting more popular on my youtube channels- check it out if you enjoy Jazz- I produce variety entertainment- something for everyone- tell your friends and welcome to joelsamuelpresents
Mr. Hampton's son (Terry) is sitting in with my band tonight on drums @ a Halloween party @ Shooters in Port Ewen,N.Y. I can see where the talent comes from. Thank you Lionel...
Lionel Hampton came into my life (permanently) when I was a teen in the mid-50s. I remember making a trip to New York City specifically to hear him play live. I saw and heard him play Debussy's "Claire de lune" on a cello (!) while 8mm color movies of WWII air combat in the Pacific were projected onto the club's wall. Surrealism! Thank you, Mr. Hampton.
I'm sad that I never really had the knowledge of when he was alive to understand the true talent of his playing, but I am glad his memory still lives on. My high school jazz band that I play bass in is going to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival this year, and I am very excited to go.
My favorite thing about this video is just seeing how much he enjoys making music. That is something that so few people can really understand.
I was lucky enough to see Lionel 3 times at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest. And man he enjoyed it just as much in his last few years as he ever did. The first two years they had two people help him walk out to the vibes, the last year they wheeled himout in a chair. Then he stood and played the shit out of those things. It was pretty amazing.
My personal advice for the fest, go to as many of the artist seminars about as many instruments as you can you learn a lot of jazz history that way.
Thanks for posting some great Hampton concert footage. I saw him and this band several times in the early '80s and they sounded great and put on a great jazz show. It was really nice of him to speak with you. He must of been hungry that day!
The first big band i ever saw was Lionel Hampton in Salt Lake City at the Cocnut Grove. I couldn't dance I just wanted to stand and listen. I loved him on the vibes, but never knew he was so great on the drums. I also remembered he had a FANTASTIC sax section. . .
yes --see my clip on aussie lauchie jamieson....who bought the feel of mjq and jazz back to aust. from chicago in '55-- my film was shot when he was very sick--but still boppin'
Nice that you posted this. A pity that the big band is not too professional, if you are allowed to accompany one of greatest masters of the swing era, your band should SWING, not play a woodcutting rock beat.
But anyway, nice that this exists and is available to be seen.
Joel, great video, Lionel was the greatest pioneer on the vibraphone and certainly mastered it. Although it was great seeing Lionel, I was a little setback when you asked him if he felt he had mastered the vibes. It was obvious a lot of his skills had diminished but the question was misplaced; maybe it would have been ok when he was 19 years old or so. Anyway, it was good to see Lionel again and the production was very good.
One of my favorite interviews just me and my camera way back a long time ago, but just one of many in the early day's of original independant television. productions.

I had the opportunity to see Mr. Hampton about 1970...
his drumming skills were impressive and he even took the the time to chat with me for several minutes after the show...
very gracious and encouraging to a young drummer.
