miniskirt? most tactical outfit she could wear to combat that shit. yeah i dont think she's too concerned about her appearance when it comes to burying her enemies.
first time i saw this was on scifi late night when they used to play anime's on the weekend. it was this followed by E.Y.E.S. of mars. i've been a huge fan since.
@troub1eshooting Rather late but not all are referred to as "Counts"; just those with ties to the old aristocracy of European countries with the exception of Britain's which the equivalent would be "Earl". Interestingly a Count is not that far high on the Aristocracy scale as one would imagine, After Count would be Marquise, Duke, Grand Duke, Arch Duke, Viceroy, Royal Consorts, Prince, King and finally Emperor. This of course is just looking at the male side of things.
@Schwaltzvald It was more a joke than a real question. And the actual answer is that its a literary technique used to make vampires seem noble regardless of the fact that they are actually parasites. Giving them powers, money, looks and/or nobility makes people desire to be vampires and thus they want to read, watch or buy anything to do with them. Thus it is simply a way to seperate them from us a little more and make us covet them even more.
I'm so glad this is still on youtube. Its one of the classics that made me love anime, along with Fist of the North Star and Akira. Don't ever delete this!! Ever!!
Well I have been hunting wearing only an pyjama. Its not like you have time to dress up if you happen to spot fresh raptor tracks in your neighbourhood.
this film would have been much better if they kept the art detail they used during its opening scene. went more cartoonish after this sequence, something i like more about bloodlust that maintained the same image throughout the entire movie.
Does anyone know why in this movie they call D a "dampeal" and in the 2nd movie they call him "dunpeal?" The books clearly say dhampir. (I know I probably spelled those words totally wrong...)
@HoppingCrowJen i just think ur hearing the movie wrong. before i started looking into some vampire things, i used to think they were calling him a dunpeal. it's just that dhampir is pronounced with the "i" having an "e" sound
Running in the dark, fighting monsters in a tiny mini-skirt with a big ass gun. Really, this isn't any different from the tons of monster movies already out.
The movie differs from the novel on many accounts, but it remains one of my favorite Vampire movies.
D is a Dhampir - a half Human, half Vampire hybrid. He is heavily implied to be the son of the Vampire King - Dracula.
I know part of his appeal is the fact that he's mysterious - much of his past remaining unknown, but I can't help but wonder - just what are his origins?
Wasn't Doris supposed to have this flowing, long black hair and a soft, narrow face? I don't remember where it said in the book that she was a pigtailed red-head with a fat face.
Oh my God, THANK YOU!! I've been trying to find the first Vmapire Hunter D movie for ages and this is the first time I've been able to find the entire movie with good audio! Thank you so much!!
its been a year since i watched this that was when i started youtube so i could watch the whole movie since doris had to get naked but because of this movie i am now a youtube nerd which i am happy of.
This is what Stephen Sommers ridiculous version of the Van Helsing should have been like as a an action hero. A guy who just does his job and never speaks unless it's necessary as opposed to just going on and on about how awesome he is despite the fact he gets massacred throughout the movie. Seriously guys like D, Peter Cushing's Van Helsing and Roddy McDowall's Peter Vincent make that guy look ridiculous. The vampires in this are FAR less campy than the ones in that movie as well dubed or not.
Dracula...seriously, there has to be a better way to pick up chick than seeking blood thirsty demons to slaughter your crush's horse and animal companion...try a pick up line. (VHD still an awesome anime then, and still is!)
eh its a cult anime and the creator had very little to do with it... either like it or hate it, personally i enjoy it, though be it the animation is crappy but it was the 80's... that's more than a good enough excuse. with regan in office honestly animation was the last of the world's worries...
wth, why does doris look like a seven year old? i just finished reading the first book, and she's compared to venus, the roman goddess of beauty... so why does she look so young? that's kind of a downer
This is a stupid question but why are Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust so different in their animation? Different directors? :-) Thank you advance.
Probably because this was made back in the 80's when people were still using hand-drawn cels as opposed to CG. Animation techniques have improved quite a bit over 20 years.
Totally grateful for the chance to see this :) I do dislike it though, I'm not a fan of old animation at the best of times, but the voice acting is attrocious, especially the vampire! The mood/style is rather cliche too, it's more 'Dracula' than a steam-punk futuristic style that the "D" series tends to go for . . . ah well, it's a nice spin on it I guess.
You understand this show is one of the first animated vampire movies, right? To say this is cliche is like saying the Godfather is just another gangster movie.. It's not. And this was before all the new-age of pretty boy vampires came around, so you can't blame the writers for making it feel more like "Dracula"... that's the point of the series. This movie is still the best animated vampire movies.. hella better than crap like Hellsing.
@badasscheater I understand that. The original novels were quite original in their own way, but - first or not - it draws far too much on old B-movies and classic horrors, it makes no attempt to distance itself from how the horror films of the 30's-60's styled themselves. I admire it's the first cartoon vampire movie, but this was the 80's, was it not? I think it should have strived for something more unique, like Bloodlust, the 2nd movie, did.
You have to consider the time this was released. During the 80's, it's not like there was a wealth of ideas flying around for the writers to make an "original" (as you would put it) style movie. Again, that would be like you saying "Godfather is just another gangster movie." By that logic, Bloodlust isn't unique either. And the novels, minus a few plot points, were similar to the movies. So, saying it's original, but the movie that's based on it isn't, makes no sense.
@badasscheater I'm not criticising the plot, merely it's execution in movie format. "Godfather" may have been 'just another gangsta movie' had it been badly conveyed in the movie medium, and in my opinion "VHD" was badly conveyed and became 'just another vampire film'. The plot is practically the same as the novel, no doubt about it, but the novel doesn't use Romanian accents that remind you of "I vant to suck you vlood!" - good plot, but the style (visually and aurally) is cliche.
Novel VHD and movie VHD both share similar themes. Bleak futuristic setting? Check. Land ruled by vampires? Check. "Western feel"? Check. There were some differences here and there regarding events, but the theme and execution remains largely unchanged. The Romanian accent is the ENGLISH dubbing. Saying the movie itself felt cliche 25 years after release is asinine. The only reason you can even sputter something is cliche is because movies like this came out.. years ago.
You're entitled to your opinion, of course. if you didn't like VHD, that's fine. Nothing is perfect, However, saying VHD is cliche is like saying Dances with Wolves is cliche because you watched newer movies like Avatar and The Last Samurai, which share a similar plot. People often overuse the word cliche without understanding the root of the plot device used. Also, saying that Bloodlust is somehow unique but the original isn't is a pretty hilarious double standard.
@KinnikuMantaro Where you reading the same novel as I? The plot from the novel and the movie are very different, it may have the same concept but they are completely different. Doris is way more independent and beautiful and she is not as whiny in the novel also D is much more loving towards the Lang family in the novel and there are a lot of tender moments in the book. In this movie depiction, although I liked it it seemed dry in comparison of the novel!
@angelface132 I fully agree, but what I mean is that essentially it is the same events and close enough to be an accurate depiction. If you look at some films adapted from books or plays, like "My Fair Lady" or "Matilda", they change things to such an extent that its barely recogniseable, or the entire meaning/point is lost. I think the movies are more dry than their novel counterparts, but I still admire them for trying to stay true wherever possible. Some changes were neccessary though.
1 in the manga shes more beautifull,
2. the sound stinks...
3 D is WAAAYYYY more hotter than that (no homo)

So, saying it's original, but the movie that's based on it isn't, makes no sense.

@badasscheater I'm not criticising the plot, merely it's execution in movie format. "Godfather" may have been 'just another gangsta movie' had it been badly conveyed in the movie medium, and in my opinion "VHD" was badly conveyed and became 'just another vampire film'. The plot is practically the same as the novel, no doubt about it, but the novel doesn't use Romanian accents that remind you of "I vant to suck you vlood!" - good plot, but the style (visually and aurally) is cliche.

@KinnikuMantaro
