I know this guy was way before my time. What the hell is so speical about this guy??? Please before anyone get's tick off, I grew up in the 80's. So I have really no clue on who the hell is this weirdo gay looking German guy is.
@WarshipAngelus He was an american artist, painter, filmmaker. His ideas were revolutional cause he questionend and infiltrated the whole art market of his time. He incorperated "everyday things" and objects of mass media into his art. Also he sells his paintings as cheap multiples... All these things were never done before and It was a slap in the face for the snobbish art public. Even to this day people go mad about him wich is pretty weird cause all of his ideas are pretty normal these days.
@WarshipAngelus This is of course only an inadequate description of his work and the person. You'll find a lot of infos in the net or in books about Warhol. There are also some pretty cool documentations avaible. FYI: He died 87' so he wasn't that way before your time. I still remeber his Clips on MTV.
@ravebritt lol.... i guess all the comic book artists and game designers are sellout too. selling your art as cheap multiple coppies is what they do for a living.
@ravebritt yess but i was refering to your comment i made a comment too as i assumed you are one of the countless haters thinking hes a dumb ass for selling his work as coppies.
@Samuhel25mb It's hardly basic. I understand some Japanese when it is spoken but I still don't think it is basic. If I'm like...singing along with a Japanese intro to an anime or something I'll often get it wrong because some words are pronounced much differently to how they are spelled in English.
@ZPGaming well, maybe the RA RI RU RE and RO might be a bit difficult for english speakers, but if you just pronounce without reading to the romanizations it's sooooo easy...
he brought together a capitalist attitude and artistic integrity and mocked both while being regarded as both sophisticated as well as financially successful.
When I die and if there is a heaven, I will make sure God turns me into a man so that I can make blinding, ranging love to Andy Warhol. Jeez, I feel like a creep right now, but he's fucking sexy. I could care less if people think he's weird.
@XPUPA: I read inside the Andy Warhol-biography by Victor Bockris (great stuff by the way - maybe the best Warhola biography ever - from an insider who was never a full member of the factory yet) that Andrej´s family are Ruthenians which are (allegedly) a Czech minority group in the the west of the Ukraine. Now what is really true ?
@marek606: And why do i read in the great biography "Andy Warhol" by Victor Bockris that Andy´s parents emigrated from a village in the West Ukraine (as a part of the Ruthenian Czech minority group there) to the United States in the early 1920s ????
Is Victor Bockris misinformed (he even visited this village in the 80s and says in his book that it is still in the Ukraine) or does this village belong to Slovakia now ?
It is a kotobasobi (playing with word). The sound JIN of "Imagine" is transcripted by the kanji 人 (person)、whose reading can be also Jin. And IMA, means also "now", conveying in this way the meanings of "Imagine", and "modern person"," person of now". The Japanese wrting systems (hiragana, katakana and kanji) allow a lot of this kind of wordplay. Hope I answered to your question.
How did Warhol navigate the legal issue of incorporating an image such as a Campbell's soup can label? Did Campbell's make an issue out of Warhol's appropriation?
@bapyou: No.Campbell had humor even to use it for their own marketing strategies again. But he had serious troubles with the Brillo company for his Brillo Boxes.
People who understand nothing about tongue-in-cheek-satire will never understand Andy Warhol.

He was a "business artist." He created a name for himself and perpetuated his career doing artwork that he knew was going to sell. He wasn't this character like Rothko that snubbed his nose at getting paid... Warhol set out to get paid. Not that there's anything in the world wrong with that!
@elestivine I am the greatest non-commercial artist in the world, but nobody knows it. Even my family does not know it. Because he(Warhol) was glad he was famous in Japan, he would decide to appear for the Japanese ad:)
@elestivine Every time I look at a Rothko I get a dual reaction ONE : man this guy is good this is really great and TWO: This guy was so ridiculously self-righteous that i can’t stand it.
@elestivine - Andy Warhol did not so much create artwork he knew was going to sell (in fact, much/most of 'his' artwork was not even made by him), as he created a 'buzz' around himself. I dont disagree with the sell out at the end of his career but towards the end of it he worked with and took advantage of a really great artist Sean Michel Basquiat. Look em up.
haha...his whole later period was about "selling out". All he did was portraits fo rich people who could pay 50,000 a pop for the Warhol "treatment". He would let his assistants do the actual work. He was skewring the consumer culture by embodying it decades before Thomas Frank wrote Commodify Your Dissent. Warhol was always ahead of the curve.
WHAT? He was a *commercial* artist from the very beginning. He started out in advertising. The whole point of his art was that it at heart it was commerce. Reproducible and irrelevant.

I dont disagree with the sell out at the end of his career but towards the end of it he worked with and took advantage of a really great artist Sean Michel Basquiat. Look em up.
TerraMantis 2 years ago
of course, u need to watch the film basquiat, warhol was only a manager at his last days

haha...his whole later period was about "selling out".

Still his ideas and the portraits were GOOD

Dang, even Warhol sold out....

WHAT? He was a *commercial* artist from the very beginning. He started out in advertising. The whole point of his art was that it at heart it was commerce. Reproducible and irrelevant.
