  • Terry comes in first, second, third,....for me. I really love his voice, too, but no one can top Allan Clarke as a singer.

  • @heymaryann1 Amen.

  • the voice of Allan Clarke seems a cutting saw to my ears, nevertheless delicious. I think that John Fogerty has noticed this for the first hits with CCR. Just the same musical approach. Starting with a high, exciting shout, and after that a cutting metal sound from a Fender. The receipt for a succesfull gig.

  • @fredvanwijnen Not the first person to say that about AC or the CCR comparison, but everything said positively, in honesty and in fairness, so I think you deserve a thumbs up.

  • Very tasty boys. I totally love this track...can't understand why it wasn't HUGE.

  • @Poopaloo55 Best guess Poopaloo? It was smack in the middle of Glam Rock so they struggled like Status Quo Struggled because they did'nt fit? Love the song too.

  • @2001perseus Could be. They took a stab at the glam thing (which I loved too) but it didn't really fit them like this stuff. They endured nonethess and still have a big fan base if YT is anything to go by!

  • @Poopaloo55 Well, going by the smiles that suddenly appear on faces when I drive the car through the town with the Hollies blaring out the windows, not just on YT. My then street cred conscious daughter once asked " Don't you think it's uncool playing old music dad." I answered. "When you understand what being cool really is you'll find the definition of cool is what you say it is not what a bunch of clones say it is." She thought on that a moment and replied "Cool thinking dad."

  • @2001perseus Nice...good story and a great lesson in independent thinking as a definition of cool. She's lucky to have you for her Dad!!

p.s. A couple of years ago I was in Mexico at a busy bar with a young crowd...and a half empty dance floor...until Long Cool Woman came on!!!

  • OH HELL...It's time to dig out the discs and play them...full volume....over and over!

  • A very overlooked classic indeed, i live in the Netherlands and this was their only number one hit over here.

Their other hits never got past the 2 position.

    I love this song :-)

  • @Welferus i like this song to , i was 19 , young gifted and not black lol , but had long hair ,and 73 was a good year for me ( the girls :-) )

  • For me their best song, though they had a lot other great songs, of course.

  • Oh man this sounds exactly like "Long cool woman" but with very minor differences

  • @Basiledes

True! Just have watched superb "The Lovely Bones" with this song. (Immediately tried "The day that Curly..." by utube!) LOL

  • These guys know how to make me smile. <3

  • Im playing this right now, a 1973 7" copy on a 1961 Dansette Junior player and there isnt a better sound in the world.

  • Yes!!! Youtube is the gratest "rockola" without coins!!!

Thank you dbailey62!! for posting this "rara avis"

  • Allan plays the guitar? FIrst time ive seen that

  • Damm Bobby ,he hits the base from the front with his sticks ,awsome

  • Isn't this "long cool woman"?

  • @AlandChrissy Uh, no. :) There is a bit of an unmistake similarity though isn't there.

  • @dbailey62 tastier than Long Cool Woman..harmonies and chunkier guitars make this better!

  • Comment removed

  • @AlandChrissy No it was an attempted follow up to Long Cool Woman as that song was such a success

  • Calvert you beauty what a bassline!!!!

  • @atco97 Ya, he was a very under rated bassist! Rock solid.

  • @atco97 -yet producer Ron Richards thought Bern was a terrible bass player1

  • I miss them so...

  • Back for a fix...love love love this one.

Allan...thanks as always for a nice eyeful!!

  • Tony Hick = Most underrated guitarist...

Some of the best sounds ever! Go Tony!!

  • oh !! I just have to smile at Allan .. hes so dang cute on this vid ... The Hollies were the Best ever ... mmm.hugs and kisses to all of the boys .xx

  • I think it is so cool in some of their vids.Bobby is playing in front something you dont very often see .i guess i have never seen to many bands behind the drummer

  • @treedawg20 the coolest video is their listen to me video from beat club, i dont think its on youtube anymore but they were all together in a line and they zoomed out so you could see all 5 and bobby put on a great show

  • Do you know where i might be able to find that video? Thanks

  • @treedawg20 it wont let me put the link here but search hollies 1968 and scroll down past all their croatia stuff and you will see it, they are all in matching white suits

  • Thanks

  • I had completely forgotten how good these guys were vocally-- just awesome and long, long overdue for a place in the rock and roll hall of fame.

  • They are enjoying themselves with this one.Bobbie's in the groove with solid backing bass from Bernie, the mostly overlooked Hollie, who doubled on piano when required. He was good for the Hollies and deserves more than he has been credited for as a band member.

  • amazing performance that show no difference from studio version although chorus does sound as playback for obvious reasons. Great video and a great radio hit in Chile back in the 70's and still today.

  • Finally our babes in the R&R Hall of Fame!!

Would give anything to be there...

I do hope Allan, Terry and Bernie will be there...

    xxxx

    Barb from CA

  • Yes, finally, indeed!!!

I would imagine that we would see the "big six" of Hicks, Elliot, Calvert, Clarke, Nash and Sylvester. Perhaps Haydock might have been invited if he hadn't gone out on the road as "Eric Haydock's Hollies" a decade or so back.

  • @dbailey62 LOL. Well that didn't happen did it.

  • The REAL Hollies!

  • Class group, best thing ever happened to music! Better when the squalker left for the us, meant the boys could get on with it, as you do lol luv em xx

  • @PaulaSmyth1

    who is the squalker ?

  • really beautiful girls dancing on this vid

    great and underrated band

  • Thanks for posting this!

    ♥DROOL!♥ The Hollies!♫

  • I love seeing the four of them in a row with their guitars like that.

  • Have to say that Tony is looking so cute in this clip!

  • This makes me hot and bothered!!!!!

  • I wonder why ;)

  • hehehe!!!

  • Another one of many, many, many great hollies performances from such a great band

  • GRANDES LOS HOLLIES, GRANDES LOS 60

  • Great song anytime, anywhere

  • great music for driving in your car :D

  • Never heard this song sung live before........wow ! Clarkey belts it out, proves the Hollies really could rock with the best of them !!!!

  • Que tema mas bueeeeeno, los mejores bailes con el puros recuerdos grandes y buenos................, lastima que esa limpieza de forma de vida no sea vea, GRAN TEMA

  • hey hollies fans, let hear once and again this song so it can reach 1000000 views

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! I taped this off an FM station in 1973, and it's the only copy I've had...till now! GREAT post, GREAT find, THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm not sure what's wrong with the full title; but in case somebody is wondering it is: 'The Day That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee' (UK No. 24, 1973). Maybe it's too long for YouTube!

In New Zealand it was on a record called '20 Solid Gold Hits - volume 6' that also had Angel Fingers by Wizzard, and My Coo Ca Choo by Alvin Stardust, amongst other timeless tracks.

  • Yes, it was too long for You Tube. I couldn't squeeze it in.

  • I LOVE YOU TUBE

  • sam mcgee's my mates great grandad who is jack mcgee

  • Allan Clarke = World's Greatest Vocalist !

I just want to be on the record saying so.:)

    peace, love and harmony

    ~Lou~

  • great music

  • Allan! You and your fringe jacket, and guitar, you sexy rock n roll rebel!!! And Tony in his flannel shirt, hot! Ow!

  • 3:18..three same blond girls.-)) and excellent song, of course

  • I guess they hand picked them because (unlike lyndloo, me and millions of others) they wouldn't grab Allan and drag him round the back!!

  • Magnificent band and song. They were beyond exceptional. My all-time favorite rockers. No others can compare.

  • Great band, this is a very very underrated track.

  • Done. We agree. Sensational drummer ,band and song .We miss these golden days ,when we had real music. Todays rap is crap.

  • Bobby Elliott was one of rock's best 60s and 70s drummers Much better than many ot todays so called players. Bald or hairy, touchy poopaloonatic.

  • OK...TRUCE...Keep yer wig on. (oops..was that my outside voice?)

  • ALLAN!!! ....You sexy beast!!

  • these are brill you should here one LP i have of them its the hollies play buddy holly they play wishing its take some beating

  • Great song. Was the drummer, Bobby Elliott , wearing a wig? He has had little hair for a long time.

  • Bobby is a brilliant drummer....his hair is SO irrelevant.

  • Thankyou Poopaloo55

  • Yes, he was. He wore a wig in the seventies.

  • hey guys! the more I watch this video the more I notice how "BORING" these girls are that are dancing by the stage yuk!they look miserable! do they realize these are "THE HOLLIES"and how lucky they are to be right THERE!!! I wud change places in a heartbeat with anyone of them just to get eye contact with my "ALLAN" wow ! I'm dreaming sorry guys getting carried away haha!..Lyndloo..

  • anyone know wat type of guitar toni is playing in this?

  • I stand to be corrected by I believe that Tony is play a Danelectro Coral Baby Sitar. Remember that only the lead vocal is live in this performance. The backing track is pre-recorded so the instruments seen may not be the instruments utilized for the recording.

  • a baby sitar?...strange instrument...anyway..thanks for that.

  • I dont understand WHY the girls near the stage are so calm and just dance and dont even look at the guys !NOT me if I was right by the stage IM sorry but I wud be up on that stage and grab ALLAN and just hug him to pieces haha!!

  • Good question. They are pretty boring dancers.

What I don't understand is why Tony doens't have any girls dancing in front of him at all? They all seem to be clustered in front of Terry.

  • @citybeat60 I'd be in that cluster in front of Terry and I'd be A LOT MORE EXCITED than the zombies in the video. (Maybe they had to sedate the girls to keep them from climbing up on stage and grabbing Terry. I know that's what I'd want to do.) He's SMOKIN' HOT in baby blue!

  • @heymaryann1 Ahhh.... soft on Terry eh? Sweet!

  • @Poopaloo55 How can you tell? Is it my drooling whenever I see him? I can't help it. He just really does something to me!! I think you've fallen for his charms also, right?

  • @heymaryann1 Well, I do get it...Terry was very hot in the 70s. That said, I'm a Clarkey girl through and through...and Terry comes in second.

  • I had been thinking the same thing...they must have drugged them. You're hilarious, lyndloo! Don't hold back...tell us how you really feel!

  • I had to see this again !"ALLAN CLARKE"Im speechless right now!! you take my breath away Im serious honest I mean it !you sexy man !wow!I love it when you look in the camera and point at >3.37>this is one of thee best songs from the "HOLLIES" thanx for posting

  • THE HOLLIES son puro talento y belleza.

  • What a voice, what a chorus, just can be possible with them THE HOLLIES

  • gentlemen, awesome, fantastic, beloved masters The Hollies playing one of their best 10 songs. Perfect, masterpiece, golden song from a golden band of all times

  • this is so wonderful perfect quality to see and listen just a wonderful band...loved this track too

    thanks so much for posting

    xxx

  • This video is of the finest quality which is the way it should have always been for this exceptional band of fine gentleman.

  • Great song !!!!

  • Actually a hotter track than Long Cool Woamn..I bet IF this was released first it would also have been their biggest hit!

  • I totally agree. Better still, Allan wrote it.

  • This is AWESOME!

  • oooooooooooohhh yea the best rrrrrrrrrrocking song from hollies.i love this feeling great 70s thanxxxxxx

  • i'd love to be in the middle of a man sandwich between Tony and Terry. Allan and Bernie too. I am so greedy =)

Cool song and what a voice on Allan !!!!

  • what guitar is this? (on 2:02)

  • oh my god !! just look at ALLAN! phew! just a hunk of love ! I cant take this ! hes too much !! love this song !! what a great beat ! and so funky !!! makes me wanna get down !yeah!!

  • I'm with you on that lyndloo. Perfection!Allan is breathtaking in this...sigh.....that voice, that face! Oh, and the rest of the band are doing a great job too. The complete package.

  • I had to watch this again ! What a Great song! love the beat and just "LOVE THE 'HOLLIES"!! What a fantastic band from the 60s! I feel like dancing ! now!! "lOVE IT"Its on my fav list!thanx for posting this great vid !!

  • I love The Hollies...I can't believe how well Allan sings and how well Tony plays and how HOT Tony is!!! Awesome band!

  • i play this song on the car cd player every day when i finish work full blast.great song, great group, great video.

  • great song.thanks

  • great

  • i love this song...allan had one of the best voices

  • Allan's voice cuts like a knife across a bank of guitars(oops, one electric sitar).Bobby grooves on the side.We can play country-rock,how's that?,(they say).Allllright! git it on boys!.

  • Thank you Hollies !for giving the fans some of the best music ever !I luv you all!

  • excelente tema de los 80, ojala sigan apareciendo grupos como estos

  • wow I love this song ...

  • Tony Hicks deserves a medal for being with the band-- through thick and thin--But it's Allan's voice that we remember and love so much --- plus the face -oh, the total package.

  • i AGREE! Tony is AMAZING! :-) Allans...fine..the VOICE of the hollies really...but TONY IS MY KINDA GUY!<3

  • Kenny Everett hosted this edition, it survives in the BBC archive, i'd love to see the whole show!

  • Great driving guitar tune, nearly as good as Long Tall Woman... What a pity Hollies did not continue this great sound.

  • anyone know if Allen Clarke is still recording? Does he have some work out there after the Hollies?

  • When They made "Long Coll Womam.." a lot of people in the states sayd that they seems CCR.That was a weong opinion cos Hollies sound always was absoluely perfect, but CCR ( that was a great band too) always showed a rsutic a contry rock.Allnn re-weote here their past hit? may be...BUT HOLLIES SOUND SUPERB AGAIN...LIKE ALWAYS....AND NOT THERE ARE COMMPARISION WITH ANYBODY....

  • Ya, a lot of people still believe that "Long Cool Woman" is CCR. Mildy annoying but what the heck.

  • You DO realize this is just a lip sync over the studio recording, right? Because that's all it is.

  • Yes. This comes from Top of the Pops, a UK pop show that has jusy finisshed runnibg. All groups used to mime

  • Some did perform live. Someone who worked on the show told me that the singers and groups would sing live over pre-recorded backing instrumentals, and many chose to mime altogether, but Musicians' Union regulations did stipulate they had to sing live.

  • Not quite true. The lead vocal is live. The rest of the track is the studio recording.

I know it is because before I posted this clip, I was fooling around with the studio recording trying to sync it up with the video. I eventually synced it up and that's when it became very obvious that the vocal was different.

  • This is NOT a lip sync. If you have ever heard the actual recording you'd know it wasn't. Finally they actually let Allan sing Live. The background vocals are recorded, but Allan is singing live.

  • I agree! ! !

  • Right well the firts part anyway..wonder why they lip sank..the rest..also the backing track is canned..too bad...

  • This is from Top of The Pops - a pop show that only recently finished in the UK. All performences were mimed

  • If Tony was lead guitar, Bernie was bass, and Terry rhythm, what guitar was Allan playing here?

  • Brill have just discovered this and Hey Willy . Why didn't Allan play guitar more often? The band looked and sounded like a real rock band.I'm amazed!!! Why didn't they continue like this in the rest of the 70s?

  • With Tony Hicks playing lead there really was no room for Allan to do anything except provide some of the greatest vocals hear in rock and roll music, which is what he did.

  • in a argetine hollies fnas.i try answer your question.Hollies was ht most underrated band in pop rock history, and the UK music nudstry decided impulse band Beatles,Stones..and a lot of minor bands that produced scandalls over the stage or in the press. The Hollies sing was too much fantastis muciscians...

  • Awesome man!! i love it

  • Great performance , great song

I didnt know Allan played the guitar (she says pleasantly shocked)

and talking of guitars the guys have 4 of em going at once in this song , excellent

  • I was really excited about all the guitars in "long cool woman' the sound and cohesion of the band added to the greatness of that song

  • A lot of Hollies fans dismiss this song as a "Long Cool Woman" re-write but I thought it was a neat variation with some awesome group harmonies on the chorus. Lots of Springsteen's influence on the lyrics here.

  • Long Cool Woman is on of the few Hollies songs with out backing harmonies. Apparently it was recorded with just Allan Clarke on Guitars, Calvert and Elliot on bass and drums.

  • Hicks plays lots of guitar on Long Cool Woman - Terry Sylvester is the only Hollie who does not appear on that track - but I am likely to have this comment removed as apparently the myth is better than the truth!

  • Ironically enough, Terry, who indeed did not participate in the studio recording, ended up singing lead on Long Cool Woman when the band toured the US and Australia in 1972-3.

  • Not at all. I did remove some earlier comments only because they were rude!

  • What was posted here that was rude? I haven't watched this video in a while, so I didn't see any of those comments.

  • looks like Tony Hicks is playing some funky Ovation, that sounds a bit like a sitar

  • It is in fact an electric sitar...prob the same one he used on The Baby...to this day when they play The Baby live Tony opens with a brief intro with his current electric sitar before the familar riffs of The Baby kick in

  • Thanks for posting! A great video!

  • My education of the Holiies continues and with each song I see on Youtube I realize I reallly dig this band .The guys were a talented bunch no question,is there more out there? I'm sure there is so I will patiently wait and enjoy whats allready available. Thanks dbailey62.

  • This is AWESOME! Thanks for posting =]
