That anyone has actually found the "3D Mandelbrot" is highly debated in the mathematics community. Many have contended that such a thing does not even exist as a structure in math. The closest candidate is the "Mandelbulb" which kind of looks like bushy broccoli.

The standard set is a surface of rotation so is this a map of the absolute values or did you use some quaternion like derivative to generate a modified distance estimate for the 2 spheres ?
This is by far and away one of the best images of it I've seen.
where have you zoomed in? as far as i see, this is not a fractal at all, but a 3D likeness of the mandelbrot bug
