The Gun barrel is basically a known trademark for the Bond films. The producers wanted something out of the ordinary that wasn't in any film, and its one of small things that makes a Bond film. Yeah blood has a small chance of getting into a real gun barrel, but that's not the point, its Unique and that's why we all love it.

You know, I never really thought this was a "gun barrel" view. I'd always thought it was a camera shutter, and the "spy" behind it gets shot, the blood runs into their eyes, and they wave back and forth before falling down... but I can see the "gun barrel" idea, too.

The problem with your idea is that it actually is a gun barrel. They actually put a camera in a gun barrel to film these until Casino Royale.

True, but you have to have been told that to know it. Because there is only a limited concept of depth from a screen, it still also resembles a camera's shutter, particularly older models. I'd figured it was someone looking through the camera, they get shot in the head, and blood flows over their eyes as they drop, because I'm a cop, and there's no way I can have my sidearm or even my carbine aiming at a target and my blood flows into the barrel.
