No one tried to say we did it selflessly, At the time, we had the couage to admit it was an empire. But the truth is that most of the commonwealth countries did well, until it was broken up. As to the 2 specific countries, well, NO ONE has ever managed to hold them, or get them out the dark ages. Saddam was an idiot for a few reasons. He trusted the United Snakes for a start, never a good idea. Then he started the war with Iran which bankrupted the country. Then he again trusted that the Yanks wouldn't oppose him taking Kuwait. The wasted resources could've funded the struggle against the Zionist filth and oil corporations as well as develop Iraq more (something which the Baathists were quite good at the start of their rule), the country would've been able to resist the US better.

It was illegal, the US wanted regime change which is illegal under international law, Saddam could not obey UN resolution because they assumed he had WMD and told him to produce them, he had none so could not.
