on top of that a delay pedal or 2 set for barely any difference in delay fractions of a second. Beefs up the sound. Then you just need a basic preamp to remove the feedback on an overdrive amp. You want to beef up a little gain, but not much. Just enough for that blues sound that you will see when you follow the amp settings below.
On a fender frontman basic amp. Just put mids at 0 Bass at 6 or 7 Treble at 5 or a little higher to your liking. Turn up gain to 3. Sounds clean with funk.
if you are wondering how to get that kind of a sound... first of all hes got a first class set up that costs alot. So if you want at least a cheaper version do this... Use a blues style guitar... single coil... usually set to neck not bridge on the pickups, or just over halfway there. Uses 10 or 11 gauge strings. Dig in for the tone and use alot of alternated muted playing as well. Amp settings include having the mids completely lowered with the lows and the highs up. Experiment with yours
I used to love when my band played The Rock in Dallas. After...i'd go across to Blue Cat Blues and catch Andy play. Unvelievable that he was playing across the street from the hole I was singing in. Not a normal occurrence in my life.
Such control with the guitar is something that comes from the person itself his choice of notes can be replicated but not how he feels about playing it, every performance is different and you can tell Andy feels it this way too
It all feels very natural. I dont think he's acting or anything, thinking about posing, etc. You can't get such EMOTIONAL PERFORMANCES from many guitarrists nowadays. He's still very techinical at the same time tho.
i dont like his little kicks n such. im in a couple metal bands so i dont really know anything about rock stage presence but regardless of the fact that i dont like what he does, hes a great guitarist which is all that matters.
thats why i said he is a great guitarist thats all that matters. it not not a big deal that he does dumb things on stage it doesnt make him less of a musician.
how many times do i have to say this. I DONT FUCKING CARE ABOUT HIS STAGE SHOW HE IS A GOOD GUITARIST REGARDLESS. i just personally dont like what he does on stage but it doesnt make a fucking difference.
i find it hilarious how no one cares about me commenting on his guitar playing, just his stage show. fucking douchebags cant even understand that it DOESNT MATTER WHAT HE DOES ON STAGE.
It's blues... yet, at the same time, it's something entirely different. So f***ing awesome! Andy's phrases are so articulate.
...and who knew that an Ibanez guitar coupled with a Mesa amplifier could produce glassy tones that rival that of any Fender. A truly original musician with a sound of his own.
lol i think he's the only one that using the combination of ibanez guitars and mesa boogie amplifiers for a clean tone and not for goddamn heavy distortion.
I just saw Andy in a clinic myself, but I didn't have the balls to video whole songs. I just grabbed a clip. Thanks for shooting and posting all this!
Andy is awesome you can tell he's studied at the Joe Satriani institute. That being said only Joe himself plays with more tone, feel and pure technical virtuosity. However Andy also plays with superb tone feel and dynamics.I believe Andy with his command of these he's in definitely in the top ten in the world.
I'm with goldtop. Andy for me is simply the best there is. I went to the clinic in NY and got a video of Andy playin' one of my custom axes! Coolest and most down to earth musician I've ever met.
The tone was still there while playing this Alder body w/ Maple fingerboard modeled Ibanez. There is something in the "Its all in the hands" cliche. Although he did mention that he likes the Xotic BB Preamp because it gives the gain with out the buzz. He uses 10 gauge strings so that he can dig in w/out breaking as often as 9's or 8's would. If I remember correctly, he also like to use a touch of delay often.
I'm all in for the "it's in the hands". I have a Lone Star, but my tone is nowhere near the stuff that he pulls off. It's unbelievable!! I will definitely try out the BB preamp...
I bought a BB preamp, but I still am a long way from sounding like Andy. I would compare it to buying the microphone that makes my voice sounds like that of Ray Charles... unfortunately, all his tone comes from him first; I have in fact followed Andy for a little while now, and have heard him get his "tone" from a variety of different equipment. He was using "Laney" amps, and has recorded "Resolution" on old Marshall equipment;
Steve Vai said that tone comes almost exclusively from the way that you play. But fret not! That's not a bad thing! Play like yourself, revel in the fact that no one else souds like you if you keep at it, and even if you do a cover, add some of yourself into the song so it's not just a copy. That said, the BB Preamp sounds wonderful, I love that it adds "oomph" to a clean passage.

its one of the later tracks on his record.
Both Jonny, and Andy are such good Guitarist's!!!!

comparing Jonny Lang to Andy Timmons is rediculous. pretty much the same thing as comparing Rex Grossman to Tom Brady

I did take a look at the settings for the BB Preamp and the Mesa Boogie LoneStar: The BB gain was set at about 12:00 along with the Lone Star.
