  • Turn your supporting foot out.. and bend your elbows A tad more when in 2nd position :)

  • I did highland dancing when I was 6or7 I stop at 10

  • I'm not into legs but I must admit this is beautiful.

  • Heyy Well Done Me and My Friend (we are 11) We are doing this for a RWC Inquiery we doing scotland and So Yeah Its REALLY haerd And we are MAORIS so yeah

  • You're arm is like, waaaaay to far out. and get your knees back. xx

  • I hate to be one of the people who put negative comments but there are a couple things to work on, one being the timing which is VERY important because you were a little fast, as well as in the cross-over step make sure your actually sliding your working foot down the front of your leg not just switching feet. My teacher likes to call it a "frontward backstep" if that makes sense. Those are the biggest things, keep up the good work! :)

  • This was so helpful I needed a video Which Tells you how to dance highland fling And the step W0W after seeing this fully this Din't help me at all =P

  • i love highland dancing but this isn't the moves i dance to

  • Hi!

Congratulations, by the way... u did it so well! :-)

  • that isnt the highland fling you mist out a step duh work on it!

  • @2002rockchick its only a four step fling!

  • @squijet1 well we do cuts for the 2nd step!

  • @2002rockchick Which step are you referring to? Can you name what step it is from the SOBHD text book?

  • I dont do those steps :L i do the 6 steps !! :P

  • @CassieMcGregor04

    Are u the dancer?

  • Isn't it a sword dance?

  • @rotesDrachenei - The Highland Fling IS a sword dance. lol

  • you need a new piper

  • STUPID EXPERTVILLAGE, DON'T TRY TO TEACH HIGHLAND you don't know what you are doing

  • you know you're meant to dance on one spot? right? well you weren't.

don't teach people untill you're a professional, and professionals don't get things like this pointed out to them, duh!!!

  • @puppylovergirl100 - I agree! Too much travelling on this dancer! lol

  • You can turn the captions off... press the cc button on the right, under the expert village logo.

  • that wis minging a insult tae scotland lassie

  • get the silly writing out of the way!!!

  • Beautiful dancing,,, but I can't see what you're doing with your feet with all that stupid pop up typing in the way.

  • Excellent performance! Thanks for teaching us.

  • che cariiina!!!! Loved it!!! :)

  • would it be queer for a man ta do this then? i know this was a test of a warrior, and i wanna learn for a good bit of footwork trainin but im not sure if id be that one silly puff, fuckin about like a girl lol have any thought? is there a different sword dance for men? i personally have no issues with tryin this meself, im a secure enough male, lol, i just c'nae find anythin that helps.. thanx dear

  • who is the piper oh my goodness!

  • Not the best dancer i have ever seen. She travels quite a bit and is not in time with the pipes at all.

  • @anniej1961 I agree. In the crossover step, she could also be doing a front-backstep instead of just changing feet.

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!

  • ummm...

is this version of the fling done only by women?

  • extra smart to put the stupid TEXT right where the legs are...GREAT

  • extra smart to put the stupid TEXT right where the legs are...GREAT

  • you're a really good dancer but i couldn't really see your feet so next vid don't put those things in please and again you're a really good dancer and a good teacher :)

  • I just want to see her feet! It's hard to learn how to do the dance without seeing the half of the foot work. :-(

  • DUMMINGJUDGE!, shes good, and am sure the 'silverware' as you said belong to her, so what if she was travelling while hopping, all dancers do it, you just cant help it, NO DANCER CAN BE PERFECT!

  • The instruction is excellent. Nice technique. The text at the bottom obscures your footwork, making it difficult to follow. Perhaps a smaller font or placement at the side might be best.

  • god i hate it when everyone becomes a critic, i do ballet and sometimes i see an amazing leap or pirrouette and there are a hundred comments suggesting how to improve. This chick is GREAT, nice technique, just because shes on youtube doesnt mean she has to be a perfect dancer!

  • I am Scottish and a grade 8 dancer. I agree with a lot of the comments here, however, I would like to encourage the dancer rather than critisize. Concentrate more on remaining on one spot! other than that the foot work was good! keep it up!

  • I love how everyone on here is a critic. For all you 'experts' I suggest you make a video, post it on YouTube and see what everyone has to say about YOUR dancing.

  • You're right. Quite a lot of travelling while hopping. I presume the silverware in the background belongs to someone else???

  • LOL arm not in 4th, not showing clear 3rd aerial try to aim for more hight.

  • dont move while hoping!!!

its pretty good but its just when you hop you move slightly to the side. slightly but noticeable!! lol

it sometimes helps if you turn your hoping foot out alot!

    lol x

  • Watch your cross over step count 6+7. You're bringing your foot to the front before count 7, making it seem like you're adding an extra and count into the dance.

  • Beautiful! With dances like these who needs health clubs?!

  • :: ov corse we dont! 128n jumps iin th fling (: but ther are plenty more longer dances thn that!

  • @RESTARTmeee - Yes there certainly is, and more strenuous than the fling too! xx

  • I am an Irish Dancer and I have always been absolutely amazed at the stamina, precision and grace that Highland Dancers have (a bit envious too lol). MAN I wish I could do that too!!! It would be so much fun to do both.

  • I do both and it's damn hard at first, but once you build up highland in your mind, they kinda stay separate and you can lead a perfectly happy life as a highrish dancer (see my channel name? hahaha)!

  • i thought that, that was quite a fast fling haha

  • if that was fast then my bagpipe teacher was making my class go twice as fast on the second half of the tune. lol. can you imagine? haha

  • Comment removed

  • The piper was PAINfully slow on that; nice that she can hang her steps to plod along

  • thats so cool :)but Ive got a question-do you have to attend ballet classes or sth?

  • its scottish highland dancing not ballet dancing, its got a growing name throughout the world now though x

  • Dancing was good, but who is your piper!? He needs to open up those toarluaths and in the 2nd part of Marquis of Huntley let the notes flow a little more.

  • @HonorableLordJD it sounded like a cd

  • @HonorableLordJD That was obviously a stock CD or it would have been much louder.

  • @HonorableLordJD

I trust that you know of what you speak, because I have nay a clue.

  • Thank you for this video. I'm just learning to dance and having this to reference when I'm not in class is extremely helpful. Cheers!

  • Thanks for the great demonstration. It has been really helpful for me in assisting my young daughter as she is learning the fling and I didn't know the dance well enough to help! Thanks.

  • you are a beautiful dancer it's good to see an expert village instructor that actaually has experience

  • You're an amazing dancer. Too bad you're getting so much criticism! You're doing a really good job!

  • Good show, lady!

  • I am preforming this dance in front of my school on the 20th i learned it a while ago im 11

  • Kira, I've always enjoyed watching you dance, especially at your zenith. For those who are not familiar, Kira has won multiple championships - national championships, North American Championships, High ranked placing at the World Championships. She is fully qualified to instruct. I'm sure she'd agree that this online format is a good reference tool for young dancers and is certainly not meant to be used in place of a personal relationship with a good Highland dance teacher or dance school.

  • No surprise here. Excellent moves.

  • you're a good dancer, but i really dont think someone can just be taught how to highland dane by watching videos on the net, it takes years of hard work to perfect the moves, and you need a teacher to give you feedback and corrections.

  • .... But, what beginner does a cross-over step?

  • I didn't, I started with rocking step, I that aually the real name? Well, that what my dance teacher told me. Back to the point, Your and excelent dancer, in cross-over, arn't your supposed to move your foot to thrid arail possition? Or I have I been taught wrong? Hmmm, I have dance class tomorrow, I'll ask.

  • I was being sarcastic... There are two versions of the Cross over. There's the plain one (through third aerial) and the one with extension (through second).

  • Yeah, the real name is actually Rocking, LOL!

If you check all the rule books, that what it says.

    and I started with cross-over.

    Not with the extension tho.

one of my favourite steps, after 5 more years, I'm doing the extension cross over now :)

  • That's great. Are the men's dances and the women's the same? Can a man do this dance?

  • Yes, a man can do this dance. My friend, who is a male, is in the Highland Lassies at our school. (Our school is the Scots.) So technically, he is a Laddie.

  • Both "lassie" and "laddie" are Scottish words meaning "girl" and "boy".

  • Like DOAer said, a man can do this dance..

All males and females do the same dances

Except for most national dances girls have a different outfit. ( dress )

  • What about the Lilt and Flora? I'd love to see a man do that!

  • Men DO dance Flora and Lilt! (First step of Lilt looks odd, as arms are in third, so the dancer can't really look at the judge in the same way that female dancers should.

The surprising thing to me, though, is that men can apparently dance the Village Maid (though I've not seen it).

  • I did the Village Maid in competition once, and a boy was beside me,

its typically the same as the flora and lilt,

    with the arms and such.

just in first position I think.

  • Absolutely. Check out my vids. There are also some great vids from the SDCCS this year of David Wilton and Dan Carr doing several national dances using boy arms.

The Lilt and Blue Bonnets have prescribed "boy arms" but the other national dances are up to the boy and the teacher to decide what arms to do.

  • replying to candyikisses101 u are supposed to slide down the front of the leg

  • well done, but i noticed that on every turn your point was heavy, almost like you are trying to push yourrself around. Also on the cross over i was always taught to acually cross-over..as in right foot second, third rear arial,round-the-leg to third arial spring left foot third rear arial, and toe in third..just wondering if there are othe ways?

  • thx about can u do a tutorial about the toeheel and crossover step? wat about the barracks? the sword dance? thx

  • that was awesome and I love the colour of your outfit! when I did highland dancing I had a horrible sky blue kilt and i wasn't advanced enough to have the jacket/waistcoat. I am from Scotland

honestly that was beautiful your turn out was nothing short of amazing and your pointing was perfect

  • Very well done!! :) You're really good!
