I wouldn't really call it half-assed by any stretch, but instead rushed.
I mean, you have to admit that a good bit of work was put into this, between the boss fights, the cutscenes, and all of that. I'm just pretty sure that it had a deadline to be completed which unfortunately cut them off a bit too early to add more characters/customization to it. I'm kinda waiting for a UT2 that has the same style, but more content.
experience I get from a game. When I play a DBZ game, I ask myself: Does this feel like DBZ? Then I look at the other factors and make my final verdict. 8/10. Patch the wounds in the possible UT2 you guys.
P.S. The two-voice Frieza/Gohan problem, slow-ass credits, and the identical combos were my only major complaints. But that's what everyone has whined about. :)
@godzilla1985freak my major complaint is the fighting style, ths game is a rental at best just for hero mode, and ik plenty of ppl tht got and loved the game wen it came out but stopped playing it completely after the first week. but thn again ive played raging blast competitively since day 1 so to me ths game just lacks the competitiveness and skill tht previous dbz games had
Good review, but I give the game 8/10 overall. Yea, it's half-assed on every corner, I'll agree. But the first game of a series(if this turns into a series) is always the experimental game. The next game is when they fix things up(excluding RB1 and 2, that terrible excuse for the next BT series). Look at Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi. Their starter games sucked balls. Their sequels, nice. Third games, fucking nailed the landing. And besides, I'm a different type of reviewer. I review by the exp
Gotta hand it to Sean Schemmel for doing the voice work for Goku. I mean, he's been doing the voice acting for same character for over 20 years(hope I got it right) and he's still going!
I agree with this review. Hero Mode is the only reason I'm keeping it. If Hero Mode returns in a future game, I hope we get the option to import our Hero Mode data from UT over to the next game.
@suerves Toriyama was much less involved with GT than most think, as it was by and large Toei's creation. All Toriyama did was contribute designs, with little control over the story. Theres also word that - if I recall correctly - he had a major hand in the development of Dragonball Online, the game responsible for outright retconning GT out of the Dragonball canon.
dbz rocks, kai blows, and this game was a big disappointment I'd rather play budokai /: this felt to me like an interactive movie and not quite a game.. Subbing btw
@ImpulseKid86 I think your next review should be Sonic Generations. Back to DBZ, I don't gave this one but I really don't think I'd mind the changing voice actors. After all its been done in the Sonic Nazo film (look up Chakra X) Also, I like the original actors for Gohan and Frieza better than Kai. Although I agree about him sounding like an old lady after I started watching Yu Yu Hakusho
@YuuMonMusuedo That was another issue I had with this game, if DBOnline can have a complex story and created characters why couldn't this game? Also in Japan a card game has more depth than a game that was supposed to be the best and final installment by SPIKE for PS3, that's just stupid.
@DrTranReincarnated DBOnline was a MMORPG so it's the main focus and DBZ: UT was fighting game and the character creation stuff was just a little bonus rather than a HUGE feature, it isn't Sims you know. Just be glad it's atleast there and fuctioning. And the comment about the games depth you made is really exaggarated(the game is more of simple than shallow).
@DBZAOTA482 I respectfully disagree. The Tenkaichi series as a whole is reasonably simple, but at least the majority of the series gave you full control over your character and a decent moveset that extended beyond just the Special and Ultimate attacks. Sure, it may not have started that way but it got there. In my eyes, Ultimate Tenkaichi is indeed shallow in comparison, to the point where the game basically plays itself.
The first three Tenkaichis definitly have much more depth to the fighting system but not the Raging Blast games, those were even simpler to play. I won't touch on that though because it'd take too long to explain.
@ImpulseKid86 I like tenkaichi better because it has more freedom and lets you try different combinations for example if you knock someone to the ground you can quickly hit them and they cant counter unlike this game where they could just get up from it.
@DBZAOTA482 That sounds like an excuse to the game because we get character creation we should be happy? Even if that creation is limited to 3 slots and is the most basic of all character creations? Not even giving you an option to create a female? That remark is just you trying to justify something that was thrown in and done wrong, I think that many would agree with me when I say if they wanted a character creation they didn't want one as simplistic and limited as this was.
@DrTranReincarnated I'm just tired of how fans keep on whining about any recent DBZ game out in stores after Tenkaichi 3, they're like spoiled kids(they don't want to be happy). If a game is similar to a previous game, they'll nitpick on it then whine about them "rehashing the same game" and want them to try something new but if they try something new, they'll nitpick on it then whine for them to bring back Budokai 3 or Tenkaichi 3. So much double-standards. Plus I kinda like Hero Mode as it is.
@DBZAOTA482 I don't think I even mentioned the older games once, I thought RB2 was great and they should of expanded on it. It just looks as if you don't have full control over your character and the battle system is more broken now then it was before, now if you have no ki your pretty much done for because all the power comes in offense and the defense if off. I think they did certain things right and certain things wrong. Hero mode just feels like a bonus. That was just slapped together
@DrTranReincarnated I'm not talking about you, I'm speaking more about the fanbase in general and I think they should stop being so close-minded. They changed it because of how people abused the previous battle system. The QTE aspect of the game is all about personal preference and I like the UT fighting system over the RB fighting system because it requires you to be more strategic about your movements and I've won battles with not much Ki.
@DBZAOTA482 If thats what you perfer but most fans who watched the animes and played the first DBZ game like me hates the shit DBZ is about fighting not strategic shit its dragon ball DRAGON BALL man i hate series i loved as a kid and make make these changes think they make it better and it ends up being shitty man i loved DBZ when i was 5 im 14 and now im sick of it im gona be watching kai tho thats a good show.
best game they've made for dbz is the first budokai for the ps2 ... all the other stuff (with the exception of a few) is so half ass. I was hoping this wouldn't be, but it looks like it is :(
@Bardock772 Out of the Budokai trilogy (quadrilogy if you count Infinite World), I still consider Budokai 3 to be the best of the bunch largely for its fighting engine. As far as Ultimate Tenkaichi goes, its indeed saddening when one realizes that the other Tenkaichi games, including the two Raging Blasts, were more comparatively more complex than this.
@Mewzard It's true that the cast do indeed seem to be trying harder for Kai, but thankfully, most of them are relative newbies that have come off Funi's dub of One Piece. As I mentioned in my review for Raging Blast 2, I personally loved the English Kai voices for Gohan and Frieza. Gohan finally sounds like a little kid again, and Freiza no longer sounds like a chain-smoking granny, lol
@Mewzard Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World, for all intents and purposes is Budokai 4, but Super Dragon Ball Z 2 won't happen, in my opinion, since it's little for than a basic arcade port, it doesn't need one. My question is how the hell did they get Stephanie Nadolny back to record lines for Gohan, she moved to New Orleans, and FUNimation Studios is in Dallas, why would she return to record half a games lines.
@PusoPimp The most likely possibility is that the English Kai cast didn't get the chance to record all of the dialogue properly (possibly due to scheduling conflicts on the casts part, and a rushed deadline on Bandai-Namco and Spike's behalf), and so some recycled audio was used.
I've never really been a huge fan of the Tenkaichi series, always thought that Budokai was better over all, I'm still waiting on a sequel to Burst Limit...maybe the whole version that should have been published when it came out. But I will say I do admire the depth of Tenkaichi as a whole. Game kinda landed where I did expected to...Raging Blast wasn't really a great template to go off of.
And other thing that confuses me over and over again is the fact, that how Spike is involved with these games? I thought it was just Namco Bandai and TOEI Animation doing the work.
@XJVHS Spike is the development team behind just about every post-Budokai-3 Dragon Ball Z console game. Two exception were Burst Limit and the PS2-exclusive Infinite World, which were developed by Dimps. :)
@ImpulseKid86 I see. I didn't know that...It's because I usually think the people behind the game are the company's mentioned in title screen or in the front of the game cover.
this game looked terrible from the very beginning when I realised that this wasn't a game and just a quicktime event based game, so I bought RB2 because it looked godly in comparison and I didn't buy that game when it came out because it looked bad because there was no story mode, but, god...it's so much better than what this game looks like. And, oh yeah: the graphics for UT sucks balls.
@TheGraahk Yeah, I noticed that. But then again, I chalk that up to the same reason why most of the vocal performances in their dub of the GT anime sucked: They just stopped trying.
@suerves Almost everyone thinks GT shouldn't exist, and while I personally enjoyed the ideas it threw out, its not hard to see why. But that's besides the point. I think the lackluster performance from the Funimation crew at that point had more to do with burnout than anything else. I can't really blame them too much in regards to the series, but I would hope a little more effort would go into one-shot projects like games.
@suerves You said DBGT sucked like it were a fact. You barely know nothing of the characters, but their actions. Kid Trunks is not like Vegeta. He is like a little kid, which he was then. He wants to do things in life.
The plot of DB/DBZ/DBGT is the same thing. The life of Goku and people around him, as well as the Dragon Balls of course. It's not that much about fighting like you may think, Martial arts is just a hobby of Goku.
@anti4kids2000 Kid trucks Clearly had a Personality similar to Vegeta in being very cocky and acting like he could take on all comers. When in GT he becomes a very Geeky like personality . Dragon ball Z is about Fighting, thats the main draw to the series unlike Dragon ball. Dragon ball is more balance with the story and more original. Dragon ball puts humor before fighting and that's why I like it over Dragon ball z. Have a nice day =>.
@DwightKSchrute3 Nope, it will always be about the life of Goku and the people around him. That's like saying Fist of the North Star is all about fighting when it's about Kenshiro finding the woman he loves.
@anti4kids2000 You misunderstood what I was saying. I was saying the appeal of the show to the majority of the people that watch it, is the fighting. The Reason I enjoy watching Dragon ball over dragon z and dragon Gt is because of Plot, Character development, Character Interaction(Which is pretty much what your saying), Adventure, humor and Fighting. In my opinion those points are better in Dragon ball then Dragon ball z and Far better then GT.
@DwightKSchrute3 When DBZ was brought to America for the first time, they did indeed advertise the fights. In Japan, it was a mixture between people enjoying the fights to people wanting to see more of Son Goku and what he does throughout life. I like DB/DBZ/DBGT like they were one show. Pilaf arc-Namek arc was my favorite part of the story.
It's not 1/2 @#$ed its complete garbage. It makes me want to throw up with the qte spam, limitations, desyched talking,no variety, sexist hero mode, low rooster count and must i go on.
if i rated it it be 2/10 just cause of the gigantic boss battle and the attempt at a customizationable charater.
@ImpulseKid86 Actually,it isn't Funimation's fault for the hilarious voice swapping. You see,due to being rushed I guess, instead of recording new dialogue,Spike recycled some of the audio from Dragon Ball Raging Blast which explains the voice hiccups.I still admit that it makes no sense considering that they could record some of the voices anyway. Also, what do you think of the limited character roster and the super attcks?
@FrDougal9000 I liked that the Super and Ultimate Attacks looked that much more like the beams in the series. Nice effort there. That said, I thought the roster was fucking insulting for what was apparently supposed to be "the Ultimate Tenkaichi game. 44 characters, almost all from Z (no surprise there...), while the other two thirds of the Dragon Ball Trilogy are virtually untouched. I'd LOVE a Dragon Ball game that went through the whole trilogy in chronological order.
totally agree i really was looking forward to it when it was announced the qte to me are used to much here. what i like to see in other dbz is another attack button, i like some of the ideas they brought such as "being able to counter, ... ultimate attacks also even if they want to keep the qte they could implement it like in bt3 when a character changed to full and changed a focus attack to knock the opponent away i think at that moment would be the perfect.

Have a nice day =>. SKYRIM!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd LOVE a Dragon Ball game that went through the whole trilogy in chronological order.

can anyone here explain why the xbox version has a acore of 6.5 or something and ps3 a 7.5?

totally agree i really was looking forward to it when it was announced the qte to me are used to much here. what i like to see in other dbz is another attack button, i like some of the ideas they brought such as "being able to counter, ... ultimate attacks also even if they want to keep the qte they could implement it like in bt3 when a character changed to full and changed a focus attack to knock the opponent away i think at that moment would be the perfect.
