  • I hope someday a filmmaker or researcher will actually follow a penguin going to where it's "not supposed to be" and see what happens to it instead of just making up a story in their head and playing sad music over footage of it leaving.

  • Music?

  • Forever alone...

  • Have you seen this penguin? signed: Mr. and Mrs. Penguin.

  • sad

  • Lol at the two idiots arguing about evolution...

  • "Hey Jerry, Where ya going?"

"Fuck you guys, I'm going that way."

  • He's forest gump!

  • Werner, you crazy fucking German. How I love you.

  • Animals that are sick will go off to die in peace - to stay in a hunting ground means being ripped to shreds and eaten alive. All animals do this.

  • Damn that Penguin is such a fucking Badass.

  • Come on Herzog! Give us a break! DO NOT dramatise this "explorer"penguin!

Without penguins like him we would still think that the world was flat.............

    and never discovered America :(

  • 99 times out of 100, it's better to live. The other 1% its better to try!

  • @GenerationYM You fail at math.

  • @MastodonManiac you fail at life - negative douche crotch

  • 99 times out of 100, it's better to live. The other 1% its better to try!

  • I kind of want Werner Herzog to narrate my everyday life.

  • one of my favorite movie moments in the past decade or so for sure. at first i thought like "WTF insane penguins? what the hell kind of question is that supposed to be?!"

this movie has so much ....character.

  • Sometimes I imagine how he would say stuff I read, he's got one of those voices like morgan freeman.

  • lol why are there always people who 'dislike' even shit like this?

  • 'Do not delay or hold up the penguin...'

  • SO DEPRESSING! If I had been standing in front of it while it was waddling past me, I would have picked it up and stuffed it in my jacket.

  • One of the best scenes of the history of cinema.

  • i love reading the comments for this video. it's amazing what people project onto the penguin, ultimately about themselves.

  • He knows where the opening to the inner Earth is.

  • Nietzsche's uberpenguin is finally among us

  • ...he would immediately head back toward the mountain. BUT WHHYYYY?!

  • Insanity is just when someone or something thinks/behaves in a fashion so far removed from the norm that it is hard to believe that the standard processes could have led to it without some form of bizarre intervention. This is a natural part of variation and diversity. When it works out, we call them "eccentric" or "visionary", depending on how successful they are. When it is less successful, or actively harmful, we call them coo coo in the coconut.

  • @Wirrit thank you, honestly. very well articulated.

  • This Penguin is analogous to Humanity. It is heading towards certain death.

  • We need to replace most Humans with Werner hertzogs. Then things would be ok.

  • r.i.p

  • That is a god walking in penguin form, enjoying the scenery. When it sees fit, it will shed it's mortal body and return to its domain.

  • fuck your happy feet fantasy shit. He fucking died, accept it.

  • @Smellycats4eva True dat.

  • The poor penguin just wants a hug

  • hes headed for the arks cuz 2012 is coming

  • so gorgeous!

  • Why? Because under the mountains there is the secret penguin base. It's all in there, hidden from view. There they plan world domination.

  • I just lost the game

  • I reckon that penguin got it all figured out. I would've gone with him.

  • this particular film has to be one of the most interesting presentations of people who live in the outer edges of the earth. this segment was yet another example of the desperate need for isolation - but it was on penguins and not man.........

i still think of segments of this film all the time. it was an experience i will never forget and the images were fascinating.

  • This is stupid. You cant assume what that penguin is doing or where he is going or that he is going to die going in that direction. He can do whatever he wants to.

  • @hairyarmedgorilla Without food, it's most likely going to die, wouldn't you say? It's also pretty slow on land, making it a pretty big target for any predator that happens upon it. They're making a well informed guess as to its fate.

  • This is still one of the most profound and sublime things ever...wow!

  • for those who didn't know, this penguin just went to the entrance of a secret underground base to do some test flights with a flying saucer.

  • i actually found this extremely depressing.....

  • does anyone else find this HILARIOUS

  • I'm sure Moses wasn't followed straight away, same with all prophets and visionaries. Eventually they will follow. All hail Moses-Penguin!

  • God, YouTube commenters: calling him a visionary. Or suggesting a fox or an eagle will tear him (or her) apart. In Antarctica. Insane.

  • (Penguin expert (one of the world's best) explained this in a mail to me)

'All animals get disorientated from time to time. However, despite what the narrator said, there is no reason why the penguin should keep on walking in the wrong direction. It may easily have turned round and come back 5 miles down the road. It's not as if the interior of Antarctica is littered with penguin corpses. Many birds explore new sites to nest for next year. I'd call it media hype."

  • That Penguin is loving the sensation of being alive. What a feeling he must have as he fizzes through the snow. Maybe he will end up starved and weakened. Dropping dead, alone and exhausted. That's if he's lucky. Maybe a Fox or Eagle will tear him to pieces. He got the sensation though. That Penguin is a total legend.

  • Going nowhere wearing a nice suit. That's the story of my life.

  • Hes heading for the promised land

  • Well, obviously the disembodied ghosts of forlorn explorers are possessing the penguins in their unending search for the pole. The poor souls, forever trapped in the drifts and eddies of death's cold whispers, their nightmarish torments feeding some astral abomination that rests hidden from sanity in the caverns beneath the snows, quietly snaring whatever tarries at the edge reason. Those men are wise not to follow the penguin.

  • the penguin heading to certain death is fucking heartbreaking.

  • very intriguing

  • 'm not sure what herzog meant to make of the incidental track. almost a little loud, at points, still the memory is as sharp as ever.

  • What they didn't see was that after getting high enough in the mountains the penguin flew away.

  • Werner is a magnet for insanity

  • that reminds me Fallout 2 encounters

  • Interesting vid.

  • idealism makes you lonely...

  • I am like the penguin.

  • @brauchmud What going to your death?

  • @brauchmud What, going to your death?

  • @CamBlow All of humanity is heading towards certain death.

  • i think this is a pun on the penguin expert. He is saying have they had enough of their colony. The guy left civilization so is the puinguin.

  • As deranged as it is, it's saddening! :'(

  • Incredible...that penguin is headed towards the mountains where there he will find the stairway to heaven. That's no penguin, That's a disciple of god...

  • why didn't they follow it?

  • Dream the Impossible Dream.

  • Now I'm convinced that this penguin is Klaus Kinski reincarnated.

  • Only Werner could uncover the secret of penguin neurosis.

  • I thought this was gunna be funny at first.. like when he said "I've never seen a penguin bash his head against a rock" then a penguin would run up and smack into the rock right next to him. Turned out to be a much nicer story.. of a penguin who dared to be different. Naturally the silly scientists could not comprehend such a behavior.. but that penguin is going places.

  • but why?

  • 1:33 is just epic ,

When he stops for a second , and looks at his mates

And keeps thinking ..,thinking .. if he should continue or get back .

  • propably the penguins evolving.. like we did... one monkey dared to go to the fields, then two monkey then all monkeys, then human.

one penguin dared to go to the mountains, then two penguins, then they become humanoids or something... wooo... go penguinoids!

  • @rekadi You're wrong. The penguins will never evolve that way. If one penguin heads towards the mountains to die it will have a smaller chance of reproducing, and therefore the gene that makes the penguins go to the mountains won't survive in the long run

  • This is one of the most epic vedios i ever seen ,

    R.I.P brave penguin

  • "Fortune," said the little penguin, "Look there, friend, where thirty or more monstrous giants rise up, all of whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and it is God's good service to sweep so evil a breed from off the face of the earth."

    "Giants?... Those are mountains."

"It is easy to see that you are not used to this business of adventures. Those are giants, and if you are afraid, away with you out of here and betake yourself to prayer, while I engage them in fierce and unequal combat."

  • @JacksInn Are you citing The Quijote?

  • Its Jonathan Livingston Penguin!

  • @oncearoundthesun That was awesome!

  • amazing snippet

  • Reminds me of forrest gump. That boy is a runnin' fool!

  • Herzog could film rotting garbage and make it riveting. German of the fucking century.

  • that has to be the sadest thing i've ever seen lol.

  • what an adorable waddle-y death!

  • Una de las mejores escenas de la historia del cine.

  • r.i.p. penguin columbus

  • This is just so sad....

  • heroes really do exist. And its name is Penguin.

  • I can just imagine what the conversation went like between those two....

"Dude, you can't fly, just live with it!"

"No, if I can just get high enough I think I can!"

"Ok, you're on your own bud, good luck with that"

    "Yeah, screw you... buddy!"

  • i cried

  • I wonder if the penguin knows it's sick, dying, etc. somehow and is driven to leave the group so as to not tax the resources for the rest of them. It's maybe an instinct to get away from the feeding grounds so that those who are healthy can benefit.

  • @bluechao most sensible explanation I've seen yet. Though yeah its more inspiring to think that the penguin is somehow evolving or trying to evolve and thats why it leaves.

  • @JenkemKookyKaffir That is not how evolution works. Evolution is not a sudden metamorphosis like a butterfly; it is a gradual change over generations of life. It is the product of death, the product of survival traits being propagated through reproduction over time. A dinosaur does not wake up one morning a bird or anything so ridiculous.

  • @JenkemKookyKaffir That is not how evolution works. Evolution is not a sudden metamorphosis like a butterfly; it is a gradual change over generations of life. • @ZorakGoesOn No it IS how evolution works: "Evolution is a process in which life is shaped by the environment it lives in. All living things have genes, which act as their blueprints. Over time, genes spontaneously mutate, causing changes in individual organisms. If those changes allow the organism to bear more offspring than others of its species and the mutations happen in genes which are passed on, then more and more organisms will start to bear those genes over time"

  • @ZorakGoesOn so the penguin spontaneously started wandering away from its group which means it may be evolving but since what its doing isn't likely to aid in the creation of offspring as well its own survival this trait will not be passed on so while its not evolving its a possible attempt to evolve. Most likely why it wanders away is like another poster said. Perhaps it is dying and doesn't want to tax the resources of the group thereby limiting their chances of reproduction and survival.

  • @JenkemKookyKaffir No, that is not how evolution levels. No animals "attempt" to evolve. Evolution isn't a sudden metamorphosis period. You know how your children (god forbid) have the same traits as you and your mate? That's how genetic inheritance works. Say a single gene changes between generations, some individual trait of a penguin that no matter how miniscule results in slightly higher survival; further generations pass it on as it helps more survive until they reproduce. THAT'S evolution.

  • @JenkemKookyKaffir Furthermore, seeing altruism in that regard when the penguin is a swarming organism that is totally self-sufficient within the swarm is daft. A penguin feeds itself, it does not "tax" the group by being malformed or sick or dying. The collective group exists for safety and easy access to mates, not like its a community analogous to human civilization. Anthropocentric thought is a fallacy of the utmost degree, and you would do well to no invoke it.

  • It just wanted to be alone.

  • Notice at 1:32 the penguin pauses and stares to his right for a few seconds. At that moment, he is considering... considering... is this the journey he wants to take... will he follow his path toward spiritual enlightenment. It is at this moment that he knows he must continue if he will ever find harmony in life. RIP little guy, the force is strong in you

  • *sobs* :(

  • there is something about thats scene when the penguin passes by hertzog and the other guy.like he knows what hes doing:)

  • wicked.if im not mistakened is this some orthodox churchical music?at least on the trailer i think it is

  • BUT WHY.

  • I'm crying.

  • The penguin knows he's the chosen one. He's been given a mission by god, that's why he's going to the mountains. He's going on a journey. He was told by god to find the Angel Gabriel who is in the mountains and ask him what his next step is. It's one big journey that will eventually lead to the penguin saving the world by defeating the anti-christ. This penguin could in fact be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ himself. Notice how his wings are spread out like a cross. He's the chosen one!

  • If someone tried to save him or her, the bad gene would just get spread around the colony. Then more would become "Hill penguins".

  • Tragically poetic. The music compliments it well.

  • werner is funny

  • Goodbye, fair, deranged penguin!

  • this is so crazy. this brings up new questions about nature. this an Grizzly man are some pretty controversial videos.

  • Wat! Where the hell is he going!

  • Maybe he just has bad eyesight?

  • no, he is seeing with a clarity that no other penguin has ever seen, imagined a place that no other penguin dared to ever before imagine, dared to dream of a place that no penguin before has ever dared to dream.

go forth penguin, and god speed.

  • its funny b/c that creativity is considered good amongst our species. but lets face it, that penguin is not going to get naturally selected.

  • @smitehz one of the best comments I have read. Bravo. You got to the very core of it.

  • @luciusinfabula what was his comment!??!?!?!

  • @smitehz perception, oh yes

  • @smitehz combination of that video and your comment gave me chills.. very nice dude

  • @smitehz best comment on youtube, EVER!!!

  • It's obvious: That penguin got some good weed and he's got the munchies. Would you eat raw fish if you had the munchies? I wouldn't. That penguin is SET on finding a 7-11 for chips, cookies, soda, chocolate milk, those hotdogs filled with cheese and maybe even a pizza with all the toppings (no anchovies, he's sick of fish). He might even be looking for White Castle.

  • Most moving moment of the film...will we ever know what the penguin is truly thinking?

  • Penguin is an hero!

  • Trust Herzog.

  • having just watched Happy Feet a few days ago really puts this into perspective for me.

    that is so incredibly moving.

  • he/she is a hero

  • Epic! This penguin is a visionary hero, a philosopher, a dreamer. Or maybe much more?

  • i feel bad , thisis very sad

  • Hmmm...just employ an animal psychiatrist, feed them some Prozac and put them into compulsory training/employment programs (work makes free!) like we do to depressed and deranged humans & all will be right with these bad, crazy penguins. LOL.

  • hey, they r not bad ok!

  • @duprie37

Your point is far deeper than the rest of these. I don't know why you're getting downvoted. There's something about this video that grabs my heart and makes me wax existential. Depression and derangement aren't logical, but what's so great about logic?

  • Thanks :) You're obviously intelligent enough to read the sarcasm in my comment whose intention was to state that instead of appreciating sadness and despair as precious emotions that inspire great works of art, we just prefer to banish them to the abyss, medicating & normalizing ourselves. And when penguins seem to reflect something similar we are nothing but totally confounded :)

  • And I thought I was tough.. can`t remember when I cried last time, that little creature made me cry like a baby . Herzog makes quality films.

  • i can relate to that brave little one.

  • Poor baby!! =( I hope the people who are ther helped him.

  • 1:30

    That's me...

So much alike, so much lonely, bein' so grateful to death, alone.

  • aww, poor penguins. they look so adorable when they waddlle. they should just build a special penguin enclosure and put all the deranged penguins in it to keep them safe.

  • wouldnt keep them from going insane lol

  • Sometimes I get sick of following people so I like to just leave and go exploring new places away from everybody.

I bet he was just exploring and knew where he was. The narrators were probably just saying he was far away from everything and was going to die because they wanted the story to sound more dramatic.

  • Comment removed

  • What ever lets you sleep at night.

  • Wild animals, especially in barren wilderness like that, do not randomly go exploring, endanger their safety and waste their precious energy to look at some mountains, unless there was some kind of reproductive or food gain to be had. That penguin needs fish for food, he can't go far from the sea and he's not built for unnecessary land travel. Animals are very conservative with their habits and if they behave like that they are crazy in animal terms. That is definitely a deranged penguin.

  • hes on a pursuit of happiness

  • Free Bird.

  • But why to the mountains? Because they were there....

  • DUMB ASS!!
