call me a heretic, but i don't think that VL's pieces FOR GUITAR are all that great. since not his instrument, he didn't have an intimate understanding of it. frankly, most of his guitar works are just a bunch of chord planing (i.e. move the same shape around), that was great around the impressionist era, but gets old when you do it over and over on guitar. when Segovia first dismissed his pieces, calling them impossible to play, i think he was referring to their fumbling nature on guitar
@mrwormburn So what you're saying is that you don't like Villa-Lobos because of what Segovia said? He also dismissed Barrios's music, and Barrios had an intimate understading of the guitar. So what you saying?
@warrkrymez not at all, im dismissing, not outright, but based on my understanding, and yes opinion, of what interesting music composition is, study 5 is ok, it moves voices, but yeah...
@warrkrymez really? i could see it. segovia is great for making the guitar a concert instrument, so for that all classical guitarist should be grateful. as a technician, and compared to players nowadays, he is pretty much crap! how's that for heresy! haha!
@mrwormburn It's fine if you don't like his guitar pieces. But dismissing them as "just a bunch of chord playing" is totally off base. Did you listen to the video at all?
Amusing indeed - this discussion. Oh mine. Villa is on the screen. The audio, of course: very good guitar player. whos is this player? If ther is a trustworthy answer ok. If there isn't - we can wait. What cannot is the recognition that Villa was a genius (whan not workin directly to Vargas :-)
andres segovia said that villa lobos isn't perfect preformer but he is brilliant composer and his work is very important for every classical guitarist especially his 12 etudes
yeh, I honestly don't believe Villa-Lobos was that good. It's very rare that the composer is as good as the performer, guitar wasn't even his principle instrument, cello was. And If you look at what he composed his guitar works are only a small portion of the legacy he left behind.
this is a Narcisso Yepes recording of the piece. There are a lot of guitar works written by composers who didn't even played the guitar. So the fact he actually wrote it is not a valid argument to determine either he's the one who plays or not :)
Imagens e sons do grande mestre, que revolucionou a guitarra moderna. Vamos todos, emocionados e agradecidos por sua música invulgar, lembrar os 50 anos do seu desaparecimento (1959).
Sure not his prime instrument but Villa Lobos was a great great composer. He knew exactly what he wanted and a total master of harmony.
I did not mean to put Villa Lobos down in any way. The music Villa Lobos left for guitar gave is very important. I can´t be critical of Villa Lobos, but it sure sounds like Yepes recording of the Prelude 2.
nonono, villa-lobos was a virtuoso at the guitar, besides being a composer and a cellist!
if you know well the 12 studies he wrote, you would imediately understand that it would take a great guitarist to pull off all those different idiomatic pieces. In fact, Villa-Lobos is responsible for a revolution in guitar playing, using fixed left-hand positions and moving them along the neck, putting most of the emphasis on the right hand. Somewhat a transposition of Debussy's piano revolution.
I can´t say for for sure how much time Villa Lobos had to play guitar, and he played more than guitar and cello well. I can only tell you, one of my best friends toured with Villa Lobos and very close to Villa Lobos. The Estudios for guitar, before being published are different, like 10 and 11.
É bonito mas as vezes musica moderna parece cubismo musical.

It´s Villa Lobos in the picture alright, but sounds very suspiciously like Yepes palying the Prelude 2.

Yeah, and the guitar wasn't Villa Lobos's "prime instrument".
So, this is obviously a fake, because to be able to play that amazingly and not have guitar as your profession at the same time is just an outrage.
