leaf sprung trucks dont have track bars for all you youtube mechanics out there. part of being a good mechanic is knowing the vehicle your talking about
lift a truck and correct the drive line angle to much = death wobble put a 33 rear tire and a 31 front tire on any truck and you would have the same issue. you need a couple degrees of caster to have directional stability
Track bar bad? If this were a coil sprung Jeep I could agree but being a mid 80's leaf sprung fullsize GM 4x4.. I am pretty sure they don't have a track bar from the factory.
So according to all the YouTube certified mechanics it couldn't be a ball joint at all for death wobble.
Hmm, I guess when I had it on my Jeep and the upper left ball joint was bad creating a variance in the camber of about 1/2 of a degree that I thought was causing my issue I was wrong, even though I didn't have the problem after I replaced that particular part alone. I'm glad we have you experts here to show us how we are wrong.
i had worse with my jeep the track bar was ovaled out the hubs wheel bearings were shot and i tore off my 4link shackels from the frame also every one i know who had the death wobble it was the track bar and the bad bearings
all these idiots on here talking up their fancy words that they dont know the first fuckin thing about the actual definition of....LMAO.THe problem is caused by one or both of two things,#1:loose steering or suspension components,or/and #2:bad alignment. You cant just slap a lift and tires on any tuck and still expect it to drive straight.Just went through this on a buddy's F-250...."The cause" you ask?...Bad lower ball joint....fixed it,took it to alignment shop...problem solved!
@mattsrepair10 Uhhhhh Sorry to bust your bubble but thats not bad lower ball joints or a alignment that causes the wobble... Its a bad Front Trac Bar LMAO... Know what your talking about...
@Breze84 Funny thing is,I own a repair shop, definately know what Im talking about, which apparently you DONT,seeing as there could be more than one thing to cause it.So how bout you put your "youtube ego" back in its box until we really meet, then we'll go from there, tuff guy.
@mattsrepair10 LMAO you own your own shop huh? Please tell me being a Lube tech doesnt mean you own your own shop... If you think that the lower ball joints is whats causing that your fucking retarded... Yea buddy, until we meet hahahaha fucking newb... Whats the name of your shop? Jiffy Lube?
@mattsrepair10 You can take your little Lincolin Tech cert somewhere else... Dude I did High Performance Engine building at S.A.M and did Custom Chassis Fabrication at Wyotech... You know how many 8,9,10 ect ect Second cars I have built and own hahahaha... Nice try flaunting your a shop owner lol...
@mattsrepair10 Gotta agree with Breze dude, Your wrong on this one... I build Rail cars and see this a lot. even though lower ball joints can cause a similar wobble like that the odds that he would have both lower ball joints bad at the same time is a little random and not only that, but it would have also have done the wobble on acceleration which it did not... Definitely a Trac Bar issue which 99% chance this is..
Amatures. It's not a jeep so it's not a "trak-bar" problem. It has to do with what's called "hung weight" of the axles and "resonant frequency". It's a real simple fix that needs some angle iron, a piece of wide aluminum and 2 steering stabelizer shocks. Trim aluminum so it looks like a wish bone or boomerang, bottom portion will be bolting on the axle with the front diff. cover bolts. make sure top is high enough to span half the distance from top of diff housing to frame.........
@whtownejr Second, make a bracket out of angle iron directly across on the driver's side to come down to the same height as your "boomerang" or wishbone piece. Basically, you need to bolt a steering stabelizer shock front and back connecting these brackets (1 will work, 2 is best) Make your brackets how you want but this cures death wobble...done it to NUMEROUS chevy's...Basic physics causes the problem...redneck engineering fixes the problem. E-mail me for pics...too simple
@whtownejr oh, and no wobble at 16 ph, no wobble at 37mph and no wobble at 75mph....even with 44's AND hitting a pot-hole. Added info...for the "Master Technicians", chevy's do this even when balljoints/king pins , tie rod ends, sway bars and steering boxes are perfectly fine. I know, you all "had a buddy", or a "cousin" or what ever....most morons know to check suspension/steering components....this fixes the problem...for good!....Using the science and thought........Good luck
its a track bar problem. most likely you need to change the angle. it has to be in the same plane as your steering box bar. try raising or lowering the track bar bracket on the axle. dont forget to reinforcing the frame end too.
@ismoketobacco 99% of people would think of that....kudos on the original thought. Its actually a problem that has to do with resonate frequency and what's called "hung weight". Ever wonder why the leaf springs bend up in the middle from the factory? to do away with the death wobble. Lift a chevy...even 3 inches (suspension, not body), you ge....TADA! Death wobble! Need to "dampen" the left to right motion of the axles. Check further up, I gave a very quick descrip. Know of anyone, I do have pic
@xXxSTENCHxXx Your front end is fucked up or you might have a bent rim who ever had your truck took it mudding and tore up the front end and that is why you have a shake I had a 1992 z71 that shook like that and it was bent rims. have your tires balanced and they can see if you have a bent rim.
hey guys. i think we can tell the front wheels are wiggling. thats about all we can tell. so it could be tie rods or it could be wheel bearings or it could be the driver flinging the wheel back and forth. quit speculating on it. muffler bearings and headlight fluid are about as accurate as u can get from this.
@BurnHefty Saying Tie rod ends to me screams to me that you're saying they're worn. Alignment is more accurate. You can replace tie rods all you want, but at the end of the day, it'd still need an alignment
Tell me how saying "Tie rod ends" means an alignment?
@XJproto i would have said alignment, except that the problem could be that the tie rod ends are broken, worn etc. i just thought that saying tie rod ends would cover all spectrums be it out of adjustment or broken, where as saying alignment doesnt cover them broken. the point of my comment was merely to point out that this problem is stemming from a tie rod issue in one way or another.
I had the same problem with a 79 chevy, 35" tires, replaces the leaf spring bushings and it all went away. Before that, i scared the hell out of a few passengers! Tap the brakes a few times, it will stop...
its ur ball joints..i know that for a fact and its a chevy it was mabye 200 at the most ant to expensive and if u lift it and put tire on it like that u have to wheel it lol
Rather expensive fix. Bent struts. I hope you have money, or at least another vehicle, because that bastard is going to be frequently and expensively broken.
Looks like you need to beef up your front end. Most likely your track bar is loose and needs to be replaced. Then you need to maybe think of new lower control arms. I know Im being serious but maybe some of you will actually learn something about suspension
@dizzlefizzle75 You need to learn something about suspension yourself. This Fullsize Chevy does not have a track bar or control arms. It has leaf springs.
Same thing used to happen to me in my 2000 powerstoke with 8 inches lift n 38 tsl swampers. It was just WAYYYY out of alignment. Not a big deal but scary as fuck when it happens lol
I had this problem, switched from single steering stabilizer, to a dual steering stabilizer(problem solved).
