DX10 and DX11 is a marketing scheme orchestrated by Microsoft, ATI and Nvidia in order to increase the sale of units of their product (GPU and OS). None of the less, DX10 and DX11 brings some cool new features such as multithread support which is probably one of the most important features of them all. Most of the features incorporated by DX10 and DX11 can be utilized by DX9. This is why most game developers still stick to DX9.
Unfortunately all the consoles are stuck in the old era (5 years ago) with xbox 360 using directx9, and ps3 and wii using opengl ver 2(perhaps). The good thing is that on computers we will always get the better performance on similar hardware to the consoles be the graphics api will always be updated and we will have access to it. Go PC games!

dx10 is the dx9 with fully gpu acceleration in geometry light and physics. which it's less cpu hog and allow cpu/system to do more background tasking while gaming. of cause it won't have any physical difference but allow graphic card run more faster without cpu bottleneck if the user had older processor while having newer installed graphic card.

get the ram size up to 8gb(because vista/7 are memory hog) and graphic card at least gtx 260 or above, dx10 is really gfx hog because the api is specialize for gpu intensive rather have cpu involve in graphic acceleration. dx 9 would require more processor power to achieve the same graphic as dx10 and in dx10 even pentium 4 would not slow you down if you have enough ram and powerful card.

DX10 had so much potential. There just wasn't much programming with it, because the consoles are still stuck with DX9. 11 is better, but it's still all hype so far, like 10 was.
@a7x5631 Another big problem with DX10 was that it only ran on Vista at the time, when everyone were using Windows XP. It was pretty much suicide for game devs to make something DX10 only, which meant they needed DX9 support anyway.
Also as I understand it DX10 did more to clean up the interface and simplify the API without really adding many killer features. With tesselation, direct compute, better texture compression and more DX11 gives you a lot more benefit to switch.
@a7x5631 I know, I know. Games like World of WarCraft hav DirectX 9 10 and 11 support. Some I have a directx 10 intel chip. In DX9 mode I got 15-30fps and in directx 10 mode get 20-50fps on a 128mb Intel GMA X4500 which isn't too bad although it says DirectX 11 in the graphics tab but whatever. DirectX 10 and 11 have better memory management which allows for better gaming play even on shitty intel graphics chips

John Carmack himself prefers OpenGL - the director of id Software, the company that made Quake, Doom, Rage, Wolfenstein, and pretty much started the whole FPS genre.
I'm limited to 500 characters so there's nowhere near enough room to fit everything I want to say.
The PS3 has amazing next-gen graphics - seriously, some of the games look great. The only high-level graphics API available on the PS3 is OpenGL ES, a CUT DOWN version of OpenGL.
To bad that the PC isn't really a leading platform anymore. Developers will first develop there game on the PS3 and/or Xbox 360 and than port it to the PC afterwards. And since both the PS3 and Xbox 360 still render with DirectX 9 primarily, the PC version is also rendered in DirectX 9 in 80% of the cases. We will not see a lot of use of DirectX 10/11 until the next generation consoles I think...
@fmcneillii Ye, ok sorry about that, PS3 does use OpenGL.. :P But that doesn't change the fact that we will not see a big increase in PC game graphics anytime soon.
we wont see a massive leap in graphics until the ps4 and xbox 720 are released, because theres no point in making a game engine that is not comparable with the current leading platforms, which are the consoles.gears of war 4 or 5 will probly be the debut for the unreal 4 engine on the xbox 720
Oh, not to mention because of the switch all versions of DX below 10 are now emulated partly in Vista and Win 7. This means that some games that run in really old versions of DirectX (6, and 7 especially) run much slower. One of my favorite games, the Orbiter space flight simulator gets about 30% the FPS (ie from 100 fps to 33) when running in Vista / 7 just because of the "overhaul" MS did. Such a step backwards....
Don't take my word for it, most benchmarks for games show that there is still -- even in windows 7 -- a performance hit (albeit very slight) for running games in DX10 vs DX9. Crysis and the more recent BF:BC2 are prime examples.
All the buzz (and even a technical document i still have from ATi) promised less overheard and therefore more graphics for the same performance. This was never realized in any way....
I should have waited for dx11 and gotten a card with at least 1gb of ram and tessellation support. I didn't though so I guess I'm gonna have to wait for dx12 and see what I get. I think I'll have to wait for black friday again, not the next one but the one after that.

@uriituw OpenGL = Shader Pipelines (Pixel, Vertex and Geometry), DirectX10 = Stream Processors (Unified)
The only API that I know of that can use unified pipelines is the dx9superset for the Xbox 360.
Unified means that each one can do each others job basically.
Even though OpenGL can do the same things that DirectX can do, their still limited to have each three pipeline, Pixel, Vertex and Geometry pipeline.

DX10 had so much potential. There just wasn't much programming with it, because the consoles are still stuck with DX9. 11 is better, but it's still all hype so far, like 10 was.

@a7x5631 Another big problem with DX10 was that it only ran on Vista at the time, when everyone were using Windows XP. It was pretty much suicide for game devs to make something DX10 only, which meant they needed DX9 support anyway.
Also as I understand it DX10 did more to clean up the interface and simplify the API without really adding many killer features. With tesselation, direct compute, better texture compression and more DX11 gives you a lot more benefit to switch.

@a7x5631 I know, I know. Games like World of WarCraft hav DirectX 9 10 and 11 support. Some I have a directx 10 intel chip. In DX9 mode I got 15-30fps and in directx 10 mode get 20-50fps on a 128mb Intel GMA X4500 which isn't too bad although it says DirectX 11 in the graphics tab but whatever. DirectX 10 and 11 have better memory management which allows for better gaming play even on shitty intel graphics chips

@snorreproductions crysis IS dx9 you moron...I have 4x955be, 4GB1600, HD1950XTX and WinXP64 on my old my pc and 6x1100T, 8GB2000, 6970, Win7 64 on my new one. if you unlock the highest crysis settings on the dx9 system the game looks EXACTLY the same. you just kill the dx10 render, rename the dx9 render "dx10" and add "-DX10" to the shortcut command and there you go: dx10 on dx9 hardware and software. "wait how is that possible?" how? because there's no real dx10 you idiot, just dummy software

2. there were no games like that before because there was no hardware power to run them (you know, developers have statistics and they chose what their target groups are and what hardware they probably have)

John Carmack himself prefers OpenGL - the director of id Software, the company that made Quake, Doom, Rage, Wolfenstein, and pretty much started the whole FPS genre.
I'm limited to 500 characters so there's nowhere near enough room to fit everything I want to say.
The PS3 has amazing next-gen graphics - seriously, some of the games look great. The only high-level graphics API available on the PS3 is OpenGL ES, a CUT DOWN version of OpenGL.

To bad that the PC isn't really a leading platform anymore. Developers will first develop there game on the PS3 and/or Xbox 360 and than port it to the PC afterwards. And since both the PS3 and Xbox 360 still render with DirectX 9 primarily, the PC version is also rendered in DirectX 9 in 80% of the cases. We will not see a lot of use of DirectX 10/11 until the next generation consoles I think...

we wont see a massive leap in graphics until the ps4 and xbox 720 are released, because theres no point in making a game engine that is not comparable with the current leading platforms, which are the consoles.gears of war 4 or 5 will probly be the debut for the unreal 4 engine on the xbox 720

Oh, not to mention because of the switch all versions of DX below 10 are now emulated partly in Vista and Win 7. This means that some games that run in really old versions of DirectX (6, and 7 especially) run much slower. One of my favorite games, the Orbiter space flight simulator gets about 30% the FPS (ie from 100 fps to 33) when running in Vista / 7 just because of the "overhaul" MS did. Such a step backwards....

DirectX 10 is / was ultimately a failure.
Don't take my word for it, most benchmarks for games show that there is still -- even in windows 7 -- a performance hit (albeit very slight) for running games in DX10 vs DX9. Crysis and the more recent BF:BC2 are prime examples.
All the buzz (and even a technical document i still have from ATi) promised less overheard and therefore more graphics for the same performance. This was never realized in any way....
