Once they got rid of the illegal Mexican workers in Alabama and hired Us citizens packaging a distribution declined greatly. Mexican workers made $2/ 25lb box of tomatos. They would average about 250-300 boxes a a day. On average one Mexican worket made from $150 to $300 a day. US citizens making the same would package only 25 boxes daily and one person would only make $25 a day. Most US citizens didnt last a whole day at work. Thats a huge difference. There is a agruculture labor deficit now

I pick lettuces in Salinas. I make 11 dlls an hour working from 5 to 5.

We are undocumented, because the U.S needs workers to do quality jobs that robots or lazy citizens can't do. This is a seasonal job. But it is honest and hard!

if american people used to work in the fields, where are they now? what happened? they probably didnt like to get paid less than what they wanted..been there, done that, and i worked overtime without getting that overtime paid..for .50 cents a bucket of tomatoes, just immagine working for that amount , now think if you want to get at least $ 200.00 a week, how many buckets will you need to do a week and then divided my five to get the total amount of buckets per day..

Dubokery said that a huge majority of the crews are piec rated and make as much as anyone else does. That is true and untrue. The pay is usually based on whatever you make in your alloted time. If you worked 10 hours and made more money hourly than by piece then you get paid that. Working in the fields really sucks because thats where I currently work and and im not an illegal immigrant or mexican for that matter. I get either eight dollars an hour or 65 cents a box.

Its the same for everyone that does all the picking or packing. The companies that do the harvesting are making big money and paying workers a small amount of cash. For example, they would pay us $2 for a 40lb tote of broccoli florets. They would sell that same tote for $30 to $40.

I feel really sorry for those workers. I used to live in Fresno, California where the temperature easily reached over 100 degrees and drive by the workers in the fields in my air conditioned car. They are hard working people and anyone who is complaining about taxes remember they are not getting minimum wage, so stop your whining and go work in those fields yourself. The only problem I do have is the children of the migrant workers tend to be in gangs. There was high crime rate in Fresno.

They pay federal and state taxes just like anyone else when they get paid. Small farmers may pay under the table but I guarantee its at or below minimum wage. They contribute to our economy and put the food that we eat on our table. They may not file their taxes at the end of the year, but it really doesn't matter because they don't get money if they don't file and they don't make enough money to even pay back taxes..
