Oct2009 i recorded this song and more songs Dec2010 I find them it was Volcano choir - island is Amazing Baby - Kankra Frightened Rabbit - Nothing Like You The Law - Television Satellite Pugwash - Monorail Jehst - Lines Of Defence(RAP) WITH SEARCH MUSIC Scars - Love Song (1980) IN YOUTUBE Nov2011
This is like if Bon Iver and Explosions in the Sky met and had a baby, and meanwhile, Sigur Ros and Radiohead met and then had a baby, and then somehow those two babies met and fucked, Volcano Choir would be the result.
@kittyfartz If you're a man, I want to have your babies. If you're a woman, I would like to have your brother's babies. If you don't have any brothers, I want to have your Dad's babies.
have you ever thought about things like, where is that bridge? whose driving over it? have i ever driven over it?what are the people in the cars in the backround taking about?where are they going?who is in the back building and why ?do they live there? work there?what kind of lives to they lead? have any of them passed away? why are the cars moving steadily but the lights in the building seem to dim?why and i even still awake?why were they awake all night?or were they? their lights were on?
@corybott Actually the squares pulse in time with the song. If you had any rhythm at all you would be able to tell that. It's not as brainless as you assume it is so stfu and listen to the music.
@Dragon50097 really ? do they? in time ?? no way!!!
that was 100% obvious, and in no way makes it a better video. you would have to be a complete moron to not figure out that they are in time (and im a drummer by the way, so i have a concept of rhythm, thanks).
$20 car lights from Walmart's Auto dept. do the same thing, how is that impressive?
why does it matter if bon iver or volcano choir came first? they are both projects of justin vernon, with strikingly contrasting styles so it doesn't matter which came first.
@deftoneskittin I DOES reminds me of coldplay - yellow, where the guy is just singing on the beach and the day arises. But I do like them colors here a bit more...
@dylantuzyk It was written in 2005 but first recorded in late 2008. Justin Vernon on Bon Iver did this with a prog rock band i think... Bon Iver started in 2006, so technically Volcano Choir came first, they just recorded much later.
This has such a great vibe! My body just swayed to the entire song. It's like an involuntary twitch that turns into a full out motion. It's fantastic. The video is great also
I love it! bon iver's for emma, forever ago was an awesome album. But this song has a different vibe and a set of good wheels on the instrumentals. A happy day finding this one.
God, how this video was made still confuses me... The sun seems to rise too quickly for it to not be a time lapse, but the cars in the background aren't going really fast... It must have just been the perfect timing.
@akatsukiyondaime2 Yeah I just had one of those eargasms you are talking about. Such amazing production quality. Vernon's voice reminds me of TV on the Radio here
listen to the old bands, pele or collections and colonies of bees, who have been around longer than animal collective and you'll see that you're wrong. or maybe don't... because you're a fucking fool
Well it sucks for you, sure, but don't assume that everyone watching this is a talentless retard - I bet there are a whole bunch of musicians watching this, myself included, and I wouldn't be surprised if some great music video directors are also watching...
But more to the point; why do you feel the need to be an asshole? You are not Justin Vernon, you are just some youtube idiot, so why would you insult everyone else in Justin Vernon's name? That doesn't make sense to me...
same, seems like volcano is a little more experimental. this song is kind of an example of that with the mixed up beat, bon iver has a more straight foward sound, if you can say that. but i agree, brilliant is the perfect word to describe his musical talents.
this song is my latest second best, second only to coldplay - strawberry swing. now, if only someone would make a comparably spectacular video for this.
I agree this is not my favorite song by justin vernon. I prefer the "for emma" album, but I think he is far from untalented. I think this song could be classified as experimental.. I think you have to respect that he is willing to take risks.

haha, not only are you a smug musical bastard, your arrogance stems belonging to the oh so exclusive club of people who know the word falsetto. (it means the upper range of vocals, just fyi to all you ignorant morons who just would love to join the music master group bassmatr started)
Just putting it out there... does anyone know what kind of equipment is used in a piece like this, in terms of how the relationship between the song and the lighting is conducted, software programs or fancy audio sensitive lights?
I'm sure there is something that does this for you, but I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't done by hand to create the exact look and relationship the director was looking for.
It seems like the video actually takes place over a longer period than four and a half minutes, so I would guess that they filmed it at speed first as a dry run, then did some math to figure out how often the lights should change if they were to make a time lapse, then set the light show up on a timer, pointed it at a bridge support, and set up a time lapse camera. That's just my speculation, though.
The lights on the construction cranes I guess could be sequenced, but what about the cars on the road? They seem to be moving in real time. Great camera trickery - time lapse daybreak plus real time figures. Underrated video, - appreciated by those who care.
To contradict myself though, at 0:07 you can actually briefly make out two silhouettes walking along the path in the bottom right corner - however it looks like they are walking abnormally quickly, which validates the case that perhaps the entire shot sped up ala time lapse style.
Either way, I think you people are missing the director's intentions: the mastery of the lights and colours to complement the music. Enjoy how the bright colours (red, blue, green, purple) visualize and conceptualize the instruments, in cadence with their strums and beats, just as Justin's vocals are represented by the white lights.
And when the flashing blocks are integrated (the whites [vocals] with the colours [instruments]) to the timing of the music, it's truly a brilliantly blended piece of eye and ear candy. The time lapse is just an added touch.
I'd be willing to bet most people came here for Justin Vernon, I came here for Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller.
