  • I'd be willing to bet most people came here for Justin Vernon, I came here for Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller.

  • mix btwn the little brother of the singer from tv on the radio, bon iver's third cousin, and sigur ros' illegitimate love child with fleet foxes....

  • ISLAND IS! Sounds like a Pirate saying it

  • Oct2009 i recorded this song and more songs Dec2010 I find them it was Volcano choir - island is Amazing Baby - Kankra Frightened Rabbit - Nothing Like You The Law - Television Satellite Pugwash - Monorail Jehst - Lines Of Defence(RAP) WITH SEARCH MUSIC Scars - Love Song (1980) IN YOUTUBE Nov2011
  • if this doesnt get your feet tapping or body moving, you may as well be dead!!!

  • This is like if Bon Iver and Explosions in the Sky met and had a baby, and meanwhile, Sigur Ros and Radiohead met and then had a baby, and then somehow those two babies met and fucked, Volcano Choir would be the result.

  • @kittyfartz Haha! Sounds like Saul from Pineapple Express!

  • @kittyfartz If you're a man, I want to have your babies. If you're a woman, I would like to have your brother's babies. If you don't have any brothers, I want to have your Dad's babies.

  • @pistachioeater i'm gay as fuck. for pussy.

  • @kittyfartz ... ok, so you're a lesbian. so what?

  • have you ever thought about things like, where is that bridge? whose driving over it? have i ever driven over it?what are the people in the cars in the backround taking about?where are they going?who is in the back building and why ?do they live there? work there?what kind of lives to they lead? have any of them passed away? why are the cars moving steadily but the lights in the building seem to dim?why and i even still awake?why were they awake all night?or were they? their lights were on?

  • this video so hauntingly gorgeous.. the song is what ud expect out of little J V's head to come out: pure emotion

  • thats why you dont take acid then play simon says

  • lol. people get worked up over noooooothing.....

  • everybody wants to be Animal Collective nowadays

  • @BoomBoxJakey animal collective never made any songs this good

  • @jelainegin for real.

  • Fking incredible song & video. I want to be Justin Vernon's bitch.

  • Saw them last night in Minneapolis - incredible. Anyone going to the Milwaukee show tonight (3/26) is in for an amazing show.

  • why cant I make cool things like this??... It makes me question my intelligence.

  • @Fookananer are you even trying?

  • @Fookananer feel bad for you ... this video is brainless BS

  • @corybott no, I feel bad for you.

  • @am3847 wow ... creative

  • @corybott Actually the squares pulse in time with the song. If you had any rhythm at all you would be able to tell that. It's not as brainless as you assume it is so stfu and listen to the music.

  • @Dragon50097 really ? do they? in time ?? no way!!!

that was 100% obvious, and in no way makes it a better video. you would have to be a complete moron to not figure out that they are in time (and im a drummer by the way, so i have a concept of rhythm, thanks).

$20 car lights from Walmart's Auto dept. do the same thing, how is that impressive?

  • @corybott until you've actually seen VC live, you can probably crawl back under your rock. preferably, now. not about the video.

  • um... my comment was about the video, and is in no way related to their live show. not sure what your point was supposed to be... ?

  • This is honestly one of the best music videos ever. And I'm serious!

  • where is this?

  • I hate 4:32 !

  • @IndieFaggitt Erm, what a coincidence :P I was just chilling to some Vernon, and you appear. Hai.

  • You can see people doing something at 0:05 in the bottom right patch of light haha. awesome song though!

  • This song is one black guy away from being an awesome rap song.

  • @20more1mores its been done already, look for the hood internet remix. they threw some puff daddy in it and its just awesome.

  • @absurdV cunt

  • @mailena15 wtf why ? xD

  • amazing

  • great song ☼

  • I always wondered what would it sound like if justin vernon joined minus the bear...

  • so damn good

  • favourite part is at 2:47-3:07 when its all reversed and eery, then it's all clean sounding. love it.

  • Worst simon says game ever.

  • 2:56 - 3:05

  • why does it matter if bon iver or volcano choir came first? they are both projects of justin vernon, with strikingly contrasting styles so it doesn't matter which came first.

  • This gives me such a boniver

  • @Capriciou5 well said. Its amazing how Justin Vernons voice dominates the sound making the two bands sound more similar than they actually are.

  • The concept for this video is beyond gorgeous. What a unique idea.

  • @deftoneskittin I DOES reminds me of coldplay - yellow, where the guy is just singing on the beach and the day arises. But I do like them colors here a bit more...

  • Probably one of the best songs I've ever heard.

  • WTF Coldplay?

  • coolbeans :)

  • i think bon iver

  • Which came first, these guys or Bon iver?

  • @dylantuzyk bon iver came first

  • @dylantuzyk It was written in 2005 but first recorded in late 2008. Justin Vernon on Bon Iver did this with a prog rock band i think... Bon Iver started in 2006, so technically Volcano Choir came first, they just recorded much later.

    So yeah.

  • @dylantuzyk bon iver. this is him with band "collections of colonies of bees"

  • Amazing video...nothing else to say

  • awesome song! its so chill

  • How can someone put a thumbs down for this video?!

  • this song jams.

  • mmmm did god write this?

  • I love this band! They kind of have the feel of MGMT, but the more soft, mellow approach of Vampire Weekend...:D

  • @mowrt620 I get a real Bon Iver feel too!

  • @caraille Probably because the vocalist is the same!

  • @foxgear04 Yeah! I realized like right after. Lol.

  • Love the sunrise.

  • This has such a great vibe! My body just swayed to the entire song. It's like an involuntary twitch that turns into a full out motion. It's fantastic. The video is great also

  • this song makes me so happy!

  • at first i thought this was an ad for Microsoft windows.. you know, back when they had four windows as a logo?

  • a beauty, an innovation, music for your non-matter.

  • I love it! bon iver's for emma, forever ago was an awesome album. But this song has a different vibe and a set of good wheels on the instrumentals. A happy day finding this one.

  • Even though this video is just a collection of flashing lights, I can't seem to look away.

  • wow, even the video is mezmerising

  • buzzin tune. shit vid

  • @LeatherCladVegan

    Whoa fella!

You should eject that carrot-shaped dildo outta your wound up asshole. U litke this song/video ? Guess what, me too?! Hi Friend.

    I hate YouTube comment forums.

  • you can see the guys who start the lights on the beginning...

  • @atariboombox hahahah niice

  • Sublime song. Five months listening to it and can't get enough of this album.

    Great video.

  • God, how this video was made still confuses me... The sun seems to rise too quickly for it to not be a time lapse, but the cars in the background aren't going really fast... It must have just been the perfect timing.

  • I love this. I want to know where it was shot.

Justin does sound a bit like Chris Martin in this but that's ok. :)

  • apparently its in japan

  • this song = ear orgasm

    and its fucking great.

  • @KC7689 i think the proper term is Eargasm. =)

  • @akatsukiyondaime2 Yeah I just had one of those eargasms you are talking about. Such amazing production quality. Vernon's voice reminds me of TV on the Radio here

  • Got that right.

  • Yes because animal collective is the ONLY BAND to ever use looped samples.

  • listen to the old bands, pele or collections and colonies of bees, who have been around longer than animal collective and you'll see that you're wrong. or maybe don't... because you're a fucking fool

  • @BoomBoxJakey animal collective were the first to do that? really, guy... you should be ashamed of yourself.

  • That's the singer from Bon Iver!!

  • You can tell they like Steve Reich.

    I, for one, like both.

  • I'm definitely not a Coldplay fan, but the vocals do sound like Chris Martin. And then at 2:57-3:06, it sounds a bit like DP.

    Great song.

  • fuck that no way

  • sounds like arcade fire + coldplay

  • Where is there other music? this is some good stuff, haha

  • vocals sounds like coldplay

  • just because its falsetto? haha nah man this sounds nothing like coldplay.

u know how i know ur gay?

  • This is really, really cool.

  • Diggin on this pretty hard

  • this is not how i envisioned the video to be like whilst listening to this song. like it thhough

  • most of you are idiots.. but not justin vernon. he made something that most of you will never come close to. sucks eh?

  • @pencilpenpaper

Well it sucks for you, sure, but don't assume that everyone watching this is a talentless retard - I bet there are a whole bunch of musicians watching this, myself included, and I wouldn't be surprised if some great music video directors are also watching...

But more to the point; why do you feel the need to be an asshole? You are not Justin Vernon, you are just some youtube idiot, so why would you insult everyone else in Justin Vernon's name? That doesn't make sense to me...

  • The simplicity of this video made me not like it the first watch, but its pretty unique, and I certainly like it a lot more now.

  • I still prefer Bon Iver over Volcano Choir. But I respect anything of Justin Vernon's. He is brilliant.

  • same, seems like volcano is a little more experimental. this song is kind of an example of that with the mixed up beat, bon iver has a more straight foward sound, if you can say that. but i agree, brilliant is the perfect word to describe his musical talents.

  • Well said! Definitely agree!

  • this song is my latest second best, second only to coldplay - strawberry swing. now, if only someone would make a comparably spectacular video for this.

  • Man im with you on that one.....I actully took those songs and put it on my mixtape :).....should be out by January.....True Hip hop to them

  • then go listen to "talented" music.

  • shhh

  • really? out of curiosity, what is "talented music"

  • maybe something that isn't completely done with instruments and a falsetto voice pumping out random notes and sounds

  • I agree this is not my favorite song by justin vernon. I prefer the "for emma" album, but I think he is far from untalented. I think this song could be classified as experimental.. I think you have to respect that he is willing to take risks.

  • haha i can only imagine how many non musical people are scratching their heads at your mention of falsetto lol

  • @BassMastr526

how many non musical people are listening to a youtube video of a relatively obscure artist's song?

  • hater XD

  • Just putting it out there... does anyone know what kind of equipment is used in a piece like this, in terms of how the relationship between the song and the lighting is conducted, software programs or fancy audio sensitive lights?

  • I'm sure there is something that does this for you, but I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't done by hand to create the exact look and relationship the director was looking for.

  • @liquorandjazz

It seems like the video actually takes place over a longer period than four and a half minutes, so I would guess that they filmed it at speed first as a dry run, then did some math to figure out how often the lights should change if they were to make a time lapse, then set the light show up on a timer, pointed it at a bridge support, and set up a time lapse camera. That's just my speculation, though.

  • The lights on the construction cranes I guess could be sequenced, but what about the cars on the road? They seem to be moving in real time. Great camera trickery - time lapse daybreak plus real time figures. Underrated video, - appreciated by those who care.

  • To contradict myself though, at 0:07 you can actually briefly make out two silhouettes walking along the path in the bottom right corner - however it looks like they are walking abnormally quickly, which validates the case that perhaps the entire shot sped up ala time lapse style.

  • Either way, I think you people are missing the director's intentions: the mastery of the lights and colours to complement the music. Enjoy how the bright colours (red, blue, green, purple) visualize and conceptualize the instruments, in cadence with their strums and beats, just as Justin's vocals are represented by the white lights.

  • And when the flashing blocks are integrated (the whites [vocals] with the colours [instruments]) to the timing of the music, it's truly a brilliantly blended piece of eye and ear candy. The time lapse is just an added touch.

  • Brilliant video. Gorgeous.

  • I'm utterly fascinated by this video and the music.

  • this looks like those little cards you play with on candyland

  • amazing.

  • you missed the point - in 4 minutes and 32 seconds you've witnessed the break of dawn...

  • I'm really surprised cos the location in this vid is very close to my apartment.

It must be under the Shin-Futago-Bridge at Kawasaki, Japan. I bet.

  • i thought it was under a bridge on the tamagawa river in futako tamagawa but im probably wrong

  • wow this is an incredible video.

  • beautiful

  • Magic!

  • love this a lot! love bon iver and volcano choir!

  • love the song.

this is close to coldplay's yellow video.

chris martin is replaced by a flyover wall.

  • why does this sound like frightened by rabbits

  • Minimalism, Hipnotik...

    Like a lot
