it's a shame there isn't southern tier passenger service. looks like pretty country to travel through. I suppose the population in the corridor is not dense enough to support it.
@Taconic66 Correct, Taconic66. There is next to nothing in terms of revenue along that line, which is why the eastern half was sold and the western half only sees a handful of trains. I have traversed the entire line though, and you are right, it is a beautiful and scenic part of the country.
In those days the Conrail Southern Tier Line was the definition of bad track. They must have appreciated the data gathered on this trip. The use of Turboliners is an interesting detail.
Back in 1995, the X2000 (or three carriages of it including the driving trailer between two XPT power cars) was trialled on a service between Sydney and Canberra. The consist also toured the national standard-gauge network of Australia, visiting at least Brisbane and Melbourne. The livery was similar, with "COUNTRYLINK" replacing the Amtrak titles.
@CSXer this is a Swedish X2000 train. U.S. has just bought one X2000 train. here in Sweden we call them X2 or X2000... this train was sweden`s first high speed train.
they would be nice, but i don't think they would have surived the beating they would have taken on most mainline railroads. especially the southen tier line or horseshoe curve, they where never designed for this operating enviroment, instead they where made for european rails

lol, good that Amtrak didnt buy X2000, here in Sweden, they are a pain in the ass when talking about relibility and maintenance.

You have no idea how well theese bogeys handle bad track, Bad track feels comfortable on theese trains. BTW where is the catenary?
randknu 2 years ago
There is no catenary. There's a pair of re-manufactured Turboliners at the end of the consist.
cbehr91 2 years ago
The ex Conrail Southern Tier main does not have catenarys Never did & never Will
MilwaukeeSDman 2 years ago
But the X2000 was built to be used on bad tracks. The railroad tracks ain't much better here in Sweden.

yup --i just wish the turboliner were still here
