He was also on steady legs. No matter how the count went, he would have got up in time. Yeah, the ref did mess up the count because he didn't go with the time keeper outside of the ring, but Buster wasn't as hurt from the shot as people made it out to be.

He even said in an interview that he tried to get up but he was mostly hazy and didn't know where he was at.

Some are fast, some are slow, some are right on the second. THE RULE: Ref's count is law. Why? Because he's required to use his fingers & voice so a fighter can see & hear the count, if he's able. This is the only input a fighter has to determine when to get up. If a ref was too far off, too often, he'd be fired, but the results would stand.
@2: Not my opinion or yours: Rules of boxing: Ref's count is LAW*, no matter who doesn't like it: Don King spent big bucks trying to get decision reversed, & failed. Fighters aren't required to watch a clock, count for themselves, or get up as soon as they can: They're required to react to the ref's count. Take that rule away & you have no way for downed fighters to know what to do. Even if Ref's fired,(he wasn't:12.5's acceptable,common,& the same count Mike got), the decision would stand.

@metalfiend124 Tyson has a problem with asthma, which gives him a disadvantage in longer fights.
Although having said that, the only time I ever saw him visibly tire was against Bonecrusher Smith. He still looked the goods throughout the rounds in all of his other longer fights I remember like against Tucker and that Mitch Green clown.

Well let's be honest, the only reason mike Tyson was so good was because he got more training than usual, he would go to the gym work out and train on some punching bags then come home and train some more on his wife the only reason his defense was so good was because he spent many nights dodging his wife's frying pan. Great boxer though. In this case he totally underestimated his opponent.

2.He was going through a bitter divorce with Robin Givens taking his mind off boxing

I agree hitchrules. He really does not want to fight anymore. He was a serious ass whooper though. Just saying, the money has been offered (30 million). Tyson said he is over 38 million in debt, and after paying his team,taxes, and all expenses, he would net less than 10 million. Long story short, he said it would take 4-5 fights for him to set himself up financially again, and he just doesn´t want to do it.

He had given up on boxing before this fight, but his ``team`` wanted to keep their money rolling in. If the only way to elevate Mike is by putting Buster down, you haven't elevated Mike at all: Even if he'd won, you'd be saying he beat a bum. Facts:1/When Buster was motivated, he had the tools to potentially beat -any- other fighter. 2/If this fight had been Mike vs any of his previous opponents, he'd have beaten them, just as he did before.

@apbtlove If you look at when Buster Douglas got dropped, he was taking his time getting up. He wasn't that hurt from the shot because he slammed down on the canvas immediately after that. He was also on steady legs. No matter how the count went, he would have got up in time. Yeah, the ref did mess up the count because he didn't go with the time keeper outside of the ring, but Buster wasn't as hurt from the shot as people made it out to be.

@Rambo1983 If Douglas wasn't hurt why he got up on the 16 sec ( 9,5 of the ref) count, what about the 8 sec count stating that a fighter needs to be on his feet , Douglas got up after 9,5 sec...the ref messed it up big time...Don King wanted to cancel the result due to that, but the whole world was so happy to see mike lose to a nobody that didn't even want to take anything into consideration...In my opinion, THAT'S just like in a NBA game when a Ref decides to extend the buzzer for a few secs!!

@apbtlove Douglas was clear when he got dropped. Not even 2 seconds after he got dropped, he slammed on the canvas. He even looked up at the ref to see the count. I was not happy at all to see Tyson lose because I was a hardcore Tyson fan, but I'm not biased in this matter. Tyson got up at 9 when he got dropped, but as you see he was out of it. He even said in an interview that he tried to get up but he was mostly hazy and didn't know where he was at.

@apbtlove:It simply doesn't matter if the ref messes the count up.The fighter's only requirement is be up before the ref's 10-count, no matter how fast or slow it is. Fighters know that, and they take as much rest as they can while keeping eyes & ears on the ref's count. Tyson got he same speed count.

@2: I'm sure about what I wrote, not whatever you think I wrote. No such thing as a "normal" 10count. (Watch more fight tapes to prove this to yourself.) Some are fast, some are slow, some are right on the second. THE RULE: Ref's count is law. Why? Because he's required to use his fingers & voice so a fighter can see & hear the count, if he's able. This is the only input a fighter has to determine when to get up. If a ref was too far off, too often, he'd be fired, but the results would stand.

@2: Not my opinion or yours: Rules of boxing: Ref's count is LAW*, no matter who doesn't like it: Don King spent big bucks trying to get decision reversed, & failed. Fighters aren't required to watch a clock, count for themselves, or get up as soon as they can: They're required to react to the ref's count. Take that rule away & you have no way for downed fighters to know what to do. Even if Ref's fired,(he wasn't:12.5's acceptable,common,& the same count Mike got), the decision would stand.
