I must admit, gypsies get bad press. Too many people are offensive towards them without any justification. I live in an area where there are many gypsies, but I have never had any argument with or come to blows with any gypsy. Like someone else on this page said, there are good and bad in all communities. I honestly think TV shows like 'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings' might give the British public a new insight that shows, while gypsies are different people, they are people none the less and harmless.

my grandad, fred wilkinson from leeds frequented the fair. He was a horse knacker. He was friendly with the boswells, and well liked. He died before I was born. My mam says id have loved him. I would love to visit appleby just to get a sense of him. As for all the negative comments about gypsies and travellers, you people should read up on history and the massive contribution made by nomadic people . A rich history of craftmanship, stories and music.

I'd love to go here but I'm afraid to do so as I'm one of those 'horsey girls' who loves horses but knows very little about them from any perspective other than riding and certainly can't claim to have 'horses in my blood' as the gypsies do. It's a shame though because i love the animals and would love to see the fair but I'm worried that I'd get hassled because I'm basically a 'horsey toff!"
