wepner was getting up and the ref counted way too fast he would have made the count. If you asked wepner i dont think he would have had no problem with getting beaten up for 19 more seconds if it meant being one of the few guys that went the distance with Ali.
His trainer thought the ref stopped it too early. You can see him fling the bucket water in the ref's face. I think if Wepner was given the full count he might have lasted the remaining 20 seconds.

Wepner was defenseless at this point, which is always what the ref looks for. They'll ask the fighter if he's alright. They'll test their arm strength. If any of those things give the ref the impression that the fighter can't defend himself then he has to call the fight - even with only seconds to go.

wepner was getting up and the ref counted way too fast he would have made the count. If you asked wepner i dont think he would have had no problem with getting beaten up for 19 more seconds if it meant being one of the few guys that went the distance with Ali.

His trainer thought the ref stopped it too early. You can see him fling the bucket water in the ref's face. I think if Wepner was given the full count he might have lasted the remaining 20 seconds.

@10majfar Respectfully, I have to ask what would have been the point of getting brutalized for 20 more seconds? That's why the ref was right to stop the fight. Wepner was defenseless at this point, which is always what the ref looks for. They'll ask the fighter if he's alright. They'll test their arm strength. If any of those things give the ref the impression that the fighter can't defend himself then he has to call the fight - even with only seconds to go.

So the answer your question "what's the point?"; It all comes down to the individual fighter and what he decides. I think Chuck wanted to go on and finish the fight, even if he was semi-conscious. He was just that kind of guy.

Ali also seemed to have a hidden reserve just for the end just in case he couldn't KO anyone before, like he KO'd Bonavena right at the end. Ali just wanted to finish spectacularly rather than go for a decision. Wepner was tough, even Liston only tko's him on cuts, not a KO. Keep in mind, Ali was the only one to stop Wepner other than cuts.

He fought every top contender of his time , and during that time during the 70's their were some great heavey weights. Foreman , Frazier , Lyle, Shavers , Jimmy Young , Norton , Quary , Holmes , Spinks, Chuvalo , The US Government.
