A friend of mine has a stainless steel media tumbler and it puts everything else to shame. After 2 hours, the brass is brand new inside and out, even the primer pockets and flash holes. The best part is that the stainless steel media lasts forever. Do a web search for stainless steel media online, they have a kit where you get a high speed tumbler, 5 pounds of ss media and some lemi shine for around $230.
For polishing you might consider the wood pellet bedding, also available at the pet store. I've just started playing with it but it shined up my .45-70 brass nicely. It does get stuck in the flash hole though so you'd need to blow or poke it out afterwards.
The stuff is great for filling lightweight shooting sandbags too. It's rigid enough to support the weight of a gun without crushing flat, but a lot lighter to carry than actual sand or shot.
Thanks for another great video. I've been using walnut shells from Harbor Freight and it works well enough, but the lizard bedding looks more coarse and might work faster.
Just to Confirm. The shells you are showing at the end are pre-polish? In other words, you just ran them through the walnut media? Thanks, Nice video. I appreciate the 'bottom line' style of your video.
Wow! I didn't know Midway charged so much. You can buy this for about one fourth the price at Buffalo Arms Co. and it won't stick in the flash hole! It is very fine and polishes the brass as shiney as you want.
I got crushed walnut from the local feed & grain store for $17 for a 50 pound bag. Someone found some locally and beat me out, they found a place that sold it for $12/50#. Walnut is very dusty so a couple of cut up used dryer sheets traps the dust. For polishing, a tablespoon of NuFinish works great, but let it run through the media for a few minutes before throwing the brass in. Also a lamp timer works well for automatically stopping the tumbler. Thanks for all your vids.
I actually have a feed store (horses, pigs, farm animals) near where I live and I get a 50 lb. bag of crushed walnut from there for $20! I got the tip from a shooting & reloading buddy of mine so, I can't take the credit on that one. If you can find a feed shop near you try it. Oh, and I also use car wax to spiff up my brass too, works really well so far. I like the pet bedding idea though, oh and nice work on the Berdan removal vid, ahhh the joys of water, not just for drinking huh?!
I buy the 50 pound bag of ground walnut shells from petsmart. I transfer it into large plastic containers. This usually will last me more that a year.
Currently I'm using... wait for it... RICE! I use 1 kilo (around 2 pounds) of the rice with the smallest grain I can find in the supermarket, and it works nearly as well as the brand products! When it gets dirty, you just throw it away and buy another packet. Yeah, I know, I'm a cheapskate...
point 1) you never tell the price of the reptile bedding to compare and see the savings.
point 2) NEVER use brasso in your brass as it contains AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE which can weaken brass and create ruptured case head situations.
It gives a great shine to ornamental brass but should never be used on pressure vessels like cartridge brass especially since you really cant neutralize it without washing your brass which means another tumbling to prevent water spots etc. which makes it too much work.
I got a better idea... pick up black walnuts or pecans (pecan shells work just as good) off of the ground at your buddy's house, shell them, bake a shitload of brownies, put the shells in a old pillowcase and smash them up with a hammer, run them through a screen a little smaller then your smallest caliber casing, pour them into your tumbler, eat brownies while your casings tumble..
I found corn cob Blast media listed at Graingers for $26.15 for 40 lbs. They carry a couple of different grits. The 14/20 looks to be about the same as what I got from Mid South with my new tumbler. They also have a finer version that might not get caught in the flash holes as easily.
I have to disagree on the Brasso. It can make your brass brittle. One should also be careful when cleaning your guns to remove any copper/lead cleaners since that can damage brass too.
Brasso is bad for brass cartridges. You can google it, and see a lot of shooters who
will verify that you shouldn' t use Brasso. There's another product that doesn't degrade the brass. I don't use either of them, and I can't remember the name of it. The pet bedding media is a good idea, and it's what I use too.
It's a little more expensive to start, but I have used stainless and it works 100x better and you never have to replace it. Well worth the investment.
Hey brother! Glad to see that someone else is a thrifty as I am with this walnut media! I can get a 20 lb bag at pet smart for $12.00 bucks! Been using it for a couple of years... it gets the job done. ;)
If you have a Harbor Tool and Freight, they have crushed walnut shells for 25# for $25. I use just a little bit of liquid car pollish and some old dryer sheets, cleans like a charm on the cheap.
If you want to extend the life of your media, take a used dryer sheet and cut it into several small strips and then put them in the tumbler with the media and cases. The dryer sheet strips will absorb a lot of the excess dirt.
anyone have a problem with media dust cakeing in the inside of the case? I had to start brushing my cases and blowing them out with compressed air. to keep that stuff out of the dies and out of my gun barrel.
There is a wheat based Kitty litter called "Swheat Scoop", And a corn based kitty litter called "Worlds greatest litter" Both are pretty cheap, and have great polishing/Cleaning ability. You can find both at Target or other department stores. (try petco or petsmart as well)
Looks like plenty of people have touched on the Brasso, but I will instert that it has hardened some of my brass and can also cause it to corrode. I have a load of brass tumbling right now in the walnut shells from the pet shop, but I also found a corn cob bedding for small animals at walmart. It is a little big, but worked with 308 brass, I will try some 223 later. Also at walmart I picked up som mother's aluminum polish in automotive. It works really good as an additive.
You can pick up bulk quantities (literally lifetime usage) at pet supplies wholesellers They're sometimes hard to find but you can go in to petshops and ask if they can get you in touch with a supplier for bulk bedding material. When you do your usage costs go down to practically nothing. :)
577x450 what the hell is that?! man i never seen a shell like that.. is that a pistol or rifle? man its gotta have a kick like nobodys business.. great idea on the lizzard bedding, what is the cost of that stuff compared to tubler media? i'm gonna have to hit my pet store up and see how the cost is near me.. great find bud..
I use corn cob bird bedding. I'm also using a really cheap old rotary jewler's tumbler. Oh lordy, it left some really gunked up .270 Win brass clean as if it was new. My whole brass tumbling and cleaning kit cost me $20 including Brasso, cheap bird bedding, and the tumbler. I can do about 150 peices of .270 brass. I would not recommend anything smaller than the .270 as it was a little tricky to get some of the insides of the cases cleaned out. I use the lizard bedding for my .223 rem brass.
Walnut shell for media blasting is cheap too. Got 24lbs for $24 at harbor freight. Add some Flitz case polish and you wont be disappointed. Like he said corncob will polish better but it tends to get stuck in small primer flash holes. Not as dusty as walnut though. Good stuff Iraqvet.
Add some nufinish car polish and used dryer sheets. Tumble for 5 minutes before adding brass. And you have a less expensive alternative to MFG reloading products.
We use to use walnut media to clean the turbines on aircraft, & ejection seat parts for NDI. It can also be used in sandblasters to remover pain, bluing, light rust and not harm the metal.
NDI is non destructive inspection magnaflux ,xray to check for cracks ect...
I use Pro Rep walnut media from my local pet store. However the depate on the brasso rolls on. Personally I dont use it as the Ammonia leeches the Nickle out the brass causing it to become brittle. Others belive that the ammount of ammonia is too small. I just dont want to ake that risk. Good Video though
How long did you tumble those? I tumble my brass for 3+ hours in treated corn cob media with a little bit of cleaning solution. Talk about clean and shiny... I do this after I prep the cases though. Before I prep the cases, I tumble the for just 1 hour to remove and dirt and soot off the outside so I don't scratch my dies.
I usually get Walnut shell media at Harbor Freight tools, which is also where I got my Calipers and tumbler. It's not a bad option for low-cost tools. The quality might not be up to the standards of Lyman and Rockford but it does the job..
@Iraqveteran8888 I thought your video was done well great lighting, great sound and focus. About using “BRASO” for a polish or cleaner. I believe it contains ammonia which hardens the brass so that it weakens and can split cases. I use Frankfort Arsenal polish and it does a nice job and last quite a while. Myself and most all the folks I know tumble “vibrate” there casings for between 3 and 5 hours to get the best result, 45 minutes is short,. All the best and keep those videos coming.
I use the same brand and like it so far. Kay-Tee brand is another one you can find at petco in the bird care section. I think it is a little bigger grit and may clean a little more aggressivly. I need to try it out.
I'm sorry I neglected to mention...The pet media is $7.50 for a 5 pound bag and about $38.00 for a 50 pound bag. Add your favorite polish and you are good to go.
