  • Quite a car in its day. Not made for handling, just long straight roads. Did they say unitized body?

  • i learned to drive in a new 1969 LTD...needless to say, i took the driver's test in a smaller car!!!

  • Just don't look too closely at the poor fit between body panels, such as at 1:17. You'll notice that the side trim doesn't quite line up between the door and the rear quarter panel.

    but i think it's about the big picture. i'd take an old ltd over some electric shavers (audis and priuses etc) any day.

  • They should bring this car back for 2012 it is awsome, screw the Dodge Charger, screw the Chevy Caprice and screw the Taurus for police cars. Its time to reopen Ford's St.Thomas faclity and bring back the LTD again !

  • @LAmonk76 Yep they where also made in New Jersey Mauwah and Edison, as they say nothing is made in the US well for the thought of bringing this car back then it will not be made in the US anymore this time when it comes back it will be Made in Camada.

  • Just think, this Ford is 42 years old now! When it was new, a 42 year old Ford was a 1927 Model T, a puddle-jumper so rudimentary it was a laughingstock by comparison to other cars of the day. Look what it progressed to in the same time as between 1969 and now, then all that progress was thrown away by the end of the 70's!

  • @4gasem Yes that's true, but I don't count that. That pretty much comes under the heading of the last 42 years has been a variation on the same theme which has led to the most complicated cars ever, and in five different colors no less: black/white/gray/gray/blue. No one will ever be able to restore one of today's cars because of all the electronics, plastics and sensors/computers, but who would want to anyway.

  • Maybe some day car companies will start making cool cars like this again. Unfortunately for the entire population of the world, I doubt it. Buyers have been trained to accept garbage if it's polished up with enough useless features.

  • I had most Fords during these years, and they were some of the best Ford ever did. The LTD was a cruiser. The perfect car for a slow putt around the Mall with the girlfriend.

  • The last of these models is dead so this type of format has been lasted a long time from 1969 to 2011 and also the cops use it very nice handeling this type of format is over on a Canadian Assembly Plant is the predecessor of this car known as the Crown Victoria is sent to Saudi Arabia, I wish I could go back in time yes I know they should pull in a 5.0 on the Crown Vic these days if they decide to keep this format and call it CVGT.

  • I had a 1970 LTD with a 429. You wanna talk about literally watching the gas gauge move down under full throttle? Oh but it did. However, because of all the weight, (a 2 door brougham) I could floor it and the back wheels would smoke almost to the 1st-2nd shift point at 54 MPH. Yeah, I killed a few tires in the rear to say the least. Great on the highway and passing was never a problem as the kickdown gear was always there to give a major boost and away I went. I miss that car. *sniff*

    my grandfather had an australian 77 ford LTD and i think that quite describes it to a 'T'

    ah you don't get commercials like this anymore, it makes you want to listen more and more and he even gives you some of the negatives as well as the positives

  • Think about the key again, you said a key about your knee. Bad design again.... instead of being higher on the dash or on the column. I didn't say the windows leaked, I said the cheap plastic trim around the rear door window never stayed clamped which caused water. And the huge hole in the trunk on the wheel well by the gas filler? Our was a POS and we didn't abuse it. Out of all of the cars we owned, that '69 was the worse car ever, bad interior design, poor workmanship...sorry

  • Our family hated ours. The ignition switch was so far down on the dash you almost had to bend over to start it. The worst idea was putting the radio where only the driver could control it---talk about a bad design--the car leaked around the rear door frames because of cheap plastic trim on the inside that would come loose. stupid place 4 the front ashtray-The trunk made a whole the size of a bowling ball under the rear left tire-we finally got rid of it an bought a '76 Impala-a much better car

  • @2000cinders the dash wasnt a good idea. but really?..you cant be sirious about the ignition being low...the ignition was basically over your right knee ...and you really cant compare a 69 ltd..to a 76 impala ..compare a 76 ltd to a 76 impala would be more of a real comp, ..and i know from personal experience that GM windows have been leaking water since at least the early 1960's ...GM for some reason always had leaking windows

  • My first car was a green ltd with the 429. I don't know what gears were in it but the older fella I bought it from had set it up to pull his trailer. Trust me it was closer to the 14's then 16. as for the body roll that was the end of the car. I punched it down in a light rain and it went sideways and rolled over. I've since owned many muscle cars, a 70 challenger R/t , road runners ,darts , super bees, and presently a 460 horse 73 Z28 but I still remember 1979 & my LTD.

  • I remember these huge poorly built American cars when I was a kid. It didn't matter if it was a Ford, GM, or Chrysler, as they were all the same; a huge mass of steel garbage with a rattling plastic interior and uncomfortable seats. Slow, sloppy handling, and a reputation for pieces of trim and side moldings falling off the body. A soft and smooth ride was about all they had going for them; other than that, these gigantic gas-guzzling pieces of shit were just downright pathetic.

  • @TheEldweebo I agree with most of what you said except gas guzzling I had a 1969 Ford XL 390 v8 and it got 16 mpg ( you can google it) yet my 2000 Nissan Frontier with a V6 get just 15......30 years newer tech and less power ....but much safer

MY family has ALWAYS bought great American made cars starting in the 1950s right up to present day when I bought a 2009 Mercury Grand Marqius. Every single car we've owed was a DREAM, not like that FOREIGN trash that's only made for short near-sighted JAPS !

  • I'm 37 and I can still remember asking my mother to turn the hide-away headlights on and off for me. In the late 70's my sister and I were in the back seat, my mother was at full stop waiting to take a left. Shortly after a woman plowed into the back of us at around 30 MPH because she was looking after her baby. The cop kept asking my sister and I if we were ok, and to which I replied "did something happen?" I miss that beast, we drove home after like nothing happened.

  • Unitized Body Frame construction. I don't think so, the Crown Vics today still use traditional body on frame construction.

  • LOL....they guy says the 280 gears are a good choice for off the line acceleration? Sweet jesus i remember those days when the polyglas tires almost came off the wheels around corners. These cars were death rolling down the road, for the other guy that is. Especially for the paper boy on his bike when the driver does not see you in time!! LOOK OUT!!! Man have we come along way in the brakes and tires department.

  • @RickinFLA07 I owned a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker for 5 years (and would still have it had I not run the PISS out of it, but, what did I know, I was 17 when I bought it and thought it was cool back then to drive like a bat outta hell, but, hey with a 440 4-barrel, that's what was expected of you LOL) and I agree, it ran circles around GM and Ford! The only car that was faster than my Chrysler was a 1970 Buick Skylark, and that's only because it had a 455 4 barrel !

  • Wow. This car supposedly has more power than a 2011 Mustang V-6, but it is no faster than a new Fiesta. Crazy. 

  • @SmidgenPC: Well...........here's the problem. Many of these older cars were equipped with shorter gear ratios, which, while provided somewhat quicker acceleration and perhaps a little more powerband stability, but little else.

    Truth is, many of these cars, once equipped with taller gear ratios{and with speed limiters removed, if any were equipped}, were actually quite capable performance wise.

  • @SmidgenPC It was the way they were geared back then. This car was rated to tow a 7,000 pound Travel trailer. The new Mustang can tow maybe 1,000 lbs. if that. Most of the cars were built for towing back then as pick ups were VERY rarely used and the auto manufactuers built the cars KNOWING that. Even the 1971 Fleetwood Brougham had the ability to tow up to 8,000 lbs. No car built today can even come anywhere NEAR that figure. Wealthy travel trailer haulers could still be comfortable.

  • @SmidgenPC ford used a 2.80:1 rear end and a three speed auto for economy. today we have V6 with 5 or 6 speed automatics with a 3.3:1 rear and 30 mpg

  • @SmidgenPC These were Gross Ratings back in the day. From 1972 all engines were quoted Net horsepower. Let's say that 90 to 100 HP drops were fairly common between 1971 ratings and 1972, on the same engine. Besides, this car weighs 2 tons and has 2.80 gearing (very bad for acceleration, good for cruising with the top gear in the box being direct, no overdrive), lousy tires and brakes, soft sprung suspension. You can see how it struggles in cornering, but for the day this was the standard.

  • @vacuumbed1 Back in its day, whole families were seen sleeping against the windows with pillows while on long road trips while the Father drove down the interstate. The ride of these cars were incredible. Most younger people would be amazed if they road in one with a like-new suspension. Harshness was non-existant. I NEVER see families sleeping on long road trips anymore. Mainly because the newer cars ride so stiff. How many times did Dad have to repark after unknowingly backing over the curb?

  • @cadrolls1 funny you mention that, i have a 74 LTD and my friends LOVE the interior and soft ride. i garuantee you some one WILL get to comfy and doose off in no time, they also like the rear ash trays in the arm rest base.

    a real shame youngsters may never know a great ride. i always said it, Best american interior's are pre-down sized models.

  • My cousin had one like that-he bought it brand new. That was a good highway car, you could drive all over europe and the USA on all the highways and never tire out in that big heavy car. Put that engine in a 2010 Crown Vicky and you would have a plush super musclecar! or put that motor in a modern Ford Mustang!! It would beat the hell out of those Shelbys!!!

  • Did this TV series do a test on any of the 1970's lincolns? If so does anyone have a clip to share of that test? I have a '74 continental 4 door. It weighs 5460 pounds with a full tank of gas, which even puts this LTD to shame when it comes to weight. Makes for an unbelievably smooth ride.

  • The big car, the plush ride of the 1970's. :( I miss those days. I hate todays cars. Plus, they can be remotely controlled or accelerate unintendedly. These big cars of the 1960s and 70s were reliable. And no radio interference could control them. Beware of alien technology.
