I've always been for clean air and clean water and good common sense envoronmentalism, but these environmentalists who are most prominent seem to have an unhealthy mannerism about them. "This is the way a river eats a dam." What the heck? The river isn't alive. But I believe that some of these people think it really is alive. There's something wrong with that. Their voice mannerisms and appearance also seems cult-like. The look in their eyes.
Most of these smaller dams weren't built like the big ones on the Columbia. They have finite cost effective lifetimes. The Elwha dam for example is of very questionable safety due to a very questionable foundation but still some voices clamored to save it from 'environmental extremism' despite the economic realities of what it would actually cost to refurbish it to modern standards. A lot of these old dams should be removed simply based on the ROI equation of keeping them.
In a time of global warming and dependence on fossil fuels, isn't hydro-power clean power? Shouldn't we take advantage of hydro-power to reduce dependence on oil? What am I missing here?
@JetMechMA Well, they say here that 18 years of activism is responsible for the removal, but from what I have read the decision was purely financial. It would have cost far too much to bring the dam up to current specs, so PacifiCorp decided to get rid of it. I even looked on the Waterkeeper Alliance site to see if they claimed responsibility, and could find no mention of it whatsoever.
@CorneliusSneedley I think part of what they mean by the activism being responsible for the dam's removal is that they fought for environmental laws that would make such a financial decision inevitable.
I might not align precisely as an environmentalist but you regardless, this is probably the best compilation of footage regarding the removal of the condit dam. Thanks for this quality video!
A great country can feed, house, and care for not just it's human population, but also the earth that sustains it. One implies the other! There are plenty of energy alternatives. Salmon are just one of the 'indicator species' in our region that show how we ALL are doing. We all want clean air, food, water, soil. ps wild salmon is 10x better. Get educated. from a frugal, conservative, liberal, planet and people loving human.
Amazing to see. Like watching this beautiful river give birth to itself. The sense of the river longing to flow, to clean and to heal itself, is overwhelming. This is such a powerful step in the healing of our culture and our place.
By far the best compilation yet of footage of the breach of the dam. It's sheer joy to watch the liberation of this river! My congratulations and gratitude to everyone who worked to make this happen.

@JetMechMA not to mention the destruction of this dam messed up the fishing.

What difference does it make if the fish can swim up the river? Honest question.
