The first pickup attempt shows that the arm does not attempt to sort if it detects that it has not picked up a block. The second attempt is the wooden block, and the third attempt is the metal block. The arm uses current sensing to determine the torque required at the base joint to lift the arm and block. The differing amounts of torque needed to lift just the arm, the wooden block, or the metal block allow it to sense which block if any it has picked up.
