Thank you a great deal for this video Gamester81. It was very informative, and NBA Jam is my favorite series behind Duke Nukem. Sometime soon I am going to buy a Genesis for NBA Jam TE. At the moment I own NBA Jam TE on Gameboy, NBA Jam Extreme, NBA Hangtime, NBA Jam 2000, NBA Hoopz, NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC, NBA Jam (2004 Xbox). Can't wait to get the rest.
You spoke a little bit about not being able to control both players in the older NBA Jam games. I have NBA Jam TE for SNES and if you go to Options, you can turn "Tag Team" on, which gives you the ability to control whoever has the basketball in their hands.
My SNES is messed up. It works fine but has a green strip in the center of the screen when playing on the good scart non RF connection definitely annoying.
At least I can just about play SNES though. This looks quite fun.
I only had the Genesis vers. of NBA Jam. It is still fun to play, but the original Arcade vers. was, in my opinion, the best. Great video!! I learned a lot. Never realized there were so many vers. of that game...Thanks again.
While watching this video I was thinking in my head "whatever happened to fun basketball games like these and why cant anyone make anymore fun basketball games that dont have to be realistic?". Im glad i watched this video through the end. I'm definitely going to give the new Jam a try if I can find it. :-D good video
Jordan wouldn't allow any sports game to use his likeness or name for a really long time, the games would get around it by having a bald guy for the Bulls named "guard" that happend to be #23.
Awesome video John. Man that takes me back to the old days. Your videos are so high quality and professional its great. I didn't realize how many NBA JAM games there were after NBA JAM TE i kinda fell off the bandwagon haha. Thanks for the vid.
Great video, I was thinking about doing the same thing since it is an interesting story, I might still cover NBA Hoopz though as I've had a lot of fun with it.
You didn't cover it, but the cool thing about NBA Hoopz is you can update the game by putting players to their new teams. I wish NBA Jam on the Wii had that because the sad fact is it will be outdated after the NBA trading deadline. In fact, once the 360 and PS3 versions come out, it will have to be a budget title since I doubt EA will change much between now and Xmas.
I think this series also game to Dreamcast but the title was different or something. It was not called NBA JAM they did not have the rights to NBA JAM.
Bitches don't know 'bout my 32X version. It's just like the Genesis version, but with better graphics, more features, and giant heads. Best version IMO.
@IsThisSumBattleToads YEAH, I THINK GAMESTER81 GOT CONFUSED. NBA JAM T.E. WAS NOT ON SOME MANY VERSIONS. IT WAS NBA JAM ON SEGA CD, WHICH I HAVE AND T.E. WAS RELEASED ON THE 32X. THE SNES VERSION LOOKS PRETTY NICE TOO.
I really enjoyed this video. I'm a little disappointed that you chose the Atari Jaguar version of the game to highlight the most popular game in the series... mainly because it doesn't seem to have arcade accurate graphics and gameplay (ignoring the big head mode, of course). The Sony PS1 and Saturn versions are closest to the arcade version.
maybe one day, the next NBA JAM game will have youtuber's like gamester and happyconsolegamer and angryvideogamenerd as characters, just like republicans vs. democrats! i have already made a NES rom hack into a game that i play where i am me and i have to rescue my wife from my boss (i hate my boss at work) who is a palette swap from bowser. the enemies in the game are the people who annoy me on the subway ride to work...
i like your commentary. video capture is great. no more lines going up on the screen because of the refresh rates. and one more thing. the ads will NOT ruin youtube. gamester and others who make videos this long with detailed commentary are *working* for us and we pay them by watching the ads. i do not have a TV. why? because i have youtube and broadcasters like gamester happyconsolegamer and angryvideogamenerd. far better than the stuff on tv and even then, the tv stuff is commercial-loaded
I love original hardware too. The saddest thing is that all these great systems do not have a great deal of life left in them. Every day their capacitors are drying out, even the transistors within their microchips are deteriorating. Make the most of the real hardware while you can !! :-(
The order of the teams you go up against is worst to best, depending on their overall record the year before. That is why in the classic you go against Dallas first, because that year they had the worst record. Vancouver had the worst record for 3 out of 4 years during that stretch, which is why you went up against them so much.
I love the arcade version, I still play it a lot with friends on emulation. On the arcade I don't think the outside court was a cheat by the way, you just selected it somewhere but i'm not sure.
nice stuff man, this is one of my favorite games growing up, i just picked up nba jam and tournement addition on SNES and Genesis. I love going back and playing this game. nice review man, take care
You forgot Bill Clinton's hidden ability: The ability to lie under oath and get away scot-free. He is also good at adultery without being punished either. :)
NBA JAM Extreme was a total waste of time I literally played 1 game of it. I couldn't take the purple pizza slice ball it was so blocky looking and so cheaply done. I got my mom to take it back and get store credit instead. Have to say tho I just might get the new one for 360 hope it has online mode tho...
Like ROAD RASH why is there no modern day classic style NBA JAM, I'd love a port of either on the DS or any system for that matter, I loved the Benny and Gorilla characters on the MEGADRIVE version.
I used to love in TE when the players would go for huge slams and then you just jump up and knock the ball out of there hand. Also, I used to hold turbo down so much, that it'd be completely empty and I wouldn't even notice until much later. Awesome game!
ewww....nba jam extreme looks like wwf warzone! I guess they used the same tech for this as they did for warzone. Man I gotta get a Wii now, so many good games on it, who can resist?
omg i remember the original midway nba jam on the snes.......from looking at all the others i'd rather get the original...the others look crappy IMO compared to the original...i probably if i get a wii get it for that but if i don't get a wii i probably won't buy the dlc
@Gamester81 Woah, they say hella in Arizona too. XD I thought that was only Cali. Anyways, awwwesome video. I've only played the one I have on Playstation the T.E. one.
@nastybeard and so many peeps flat out think the jaguar console sucks. a lot of the games do, but there are some few nice gems on there. i own one, so i know firsthand.
Great video man. In my opinion, the best game in this series is the Dreamcast version of Showtime. The graphics are very nice and crisp (definitely when compared to the other ports) and the gameplay is just phenomenal. I'm not big on sports games, but I played it to death. It's also one of the few games I really became a master of. Eventually no one (not even the AI) could beat me. The best part was that you could progress your characters by playing multiplayer as well as in the single-player.
@norriszappa25 yeah you're right it was made by Midway in 2001. I didn't want to make this a half hour vid so I had to leave some version out including NBA Jam 99 and NBA Jam 2000 as well.
Two things...1. You could play as both players in the earlier NBA Jam games by turning on the tag option in the options menu, and 2. Michael Jordan was in a contract with EA to put out that Windy City game on the Super NES, so thats why he couldn't be in NBA Jam. At least he's in NBA 2K11 :)
Awesome video Gamester. NBA Jam TE for SNES was one of the first games I ever played, so it holds alot of memories for me. Can't wait to get my hands on the new one.
Please, I'd like to know what kind of add you had. Mine was of Garnier in the Dutch language. (I happen to be from the Netherlands). I wonder if the adds are the same for everyone else.
@BjornGunn something dumb that was 15 sec long and un skip-able i understand on vid adds but these are absolutely ridiculous i refuse to watch those, i watch youtube over TV sometimes to avoid this shit, but it ruins vids not worth my time in my opinion no matter how much i like a channel.
@RetroBasement I hate to recommend it, just because I like indirectly supporting Gamester81, but firefox or palemoon as a browser, and AdBlock plus and NoScript as extensions will prevent you from making hasty decisions and douche-y comments in the future.
@RetroBasement Apologies. I guess I made my own douche comment in a zealous defense of Gamester81. Seriously, though, try out those extensions and palemoon (if you're using windows). Ads -- on the rare occasion you even see them -- become much more bearable.
@ gamester81 @RetroBasement Dude, gamester puts a ton of time and work into these videos he releases on a regular basis. No need to give him the cold shoulder for a 15 second ad.
Jazz? I didn't know he was in that game.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the latest NBA Jam are going to be on disc, not DLC. Great video though Gamester. :)

If I remember correctly, the reason they didn't use Michael Jordan is because he was off playing baseball, at the time.

Awesome video Gamester. NBA Jam TE for SNES was one of the first games I ever played, so it holds alot of memories for me. Can't wait to get my hands on the new one.

@RetroBasement too bad that only 15 seconds had to ruin it for you.

@RetroBasement,
Please, I'd like to know what kind of add you had.

@RetroBasement I hate to recommend it, just because I like indirectly supporting Gamester81, but firefox or palemoon as a browser, and AdBlock plus and NoScript as extensions will prevent you from making hasty decisions and douche-y comments in the future.
jizzmatic2000 1 year ago
@jizzmatic2000 that wasnt a douche comment im just saying i cant stand those adds
RetroBasement 1 year ago
@RetroBasement Apologies. I guess I made my own douche comment in a zealous defense of Gamester81. Seriously, though, try out those extensions and palemoon (if you're using windows). Ads -- on the rare occasion you even see them -- become much more bearable.

@ gamester81 @RetroBasement Dude, gamester puts a ton of time and work into these videos he releases on a regular basis. No need to give him the cold shoulder for a 15 second ad.

You sound hungover and quite unenthusiastic in this review. A good review anyways
