@tbsys31061 this is true, but the GPU not being able to be used is also a big issue with the fact that anything you run is being put on the CPU which yes is 7 cells but (i was wrong about the RAM) has only 256 Mb of RAM which makes it run like a MAC from the 90's, both of these things are the problem. If you have a jailbroken ps3 there is a way to unlock the GPU and the 8th cell in a PS3 which would definitely help.

1. There's no ATI graphics... it has nVidia graphics card... 2. it has jus 256MB of ram... everything is going to be slow ... 3. glxgears is slow because you don't have 3D .... what you get is special CPU architecture where you can use auxiliary SPUs ... you have to have special application that can utilize them... linux itself runs just on the PowerPC core which is pretty weak compared to i7 for example :) ... remember Apple went from PowerPC to Intel...
As for the video card the Playstation 3 uses an Nvidia chip, not an ATI. its called the "RSX 'Reality Synthesizer" which is based on the Nvidia GeForce 7800 Architecture.

You can't install PS3-Emulators that way because first of all there is none and secondly you can't access the hardware with linux - so there wouldn't be enough power to run an emulator.
for an nes emulater yea you can people do it all the time aisde from that ps3 run normal emulaters that are built for computers unlike the psp wict need them specaily made

@Nameduserful Did you try to delete the partition? I'm no professional, but from what I understand is when you partition data on a hard drive it splits it in to two separate drives. Like Window for example the main drive is recognize as C:/, but data for system restore is on a separate drive like E:/ or F:/ on the same hard drive. So if for some reason you have to do a system restore the computer reboots itself from the E:/. Probably best to contact Sony and see what they have to say about it.
@JulietDeltaCarlie yeah well that includes putting the harddrive in the computer and getting partion magic and well i dont have the patients to do that with school and well i just got ten gigs i cant use out of 80 and i dont play it much so i dont really care but awhile ago my ps3 decided to load linux and would't let you do anything and that was before i found out about the ps3 restore feature.... The reason they limit hardware access is to prevent people from using linux to pirate PS3 games. Also i haven't instaled Linux on my PS3 yet but the best use i think you can get from linux on PS3 is running emulators. There is a cool emulator for the PS3 which can run SNES, NES, Mega Drive, GB and GBA games using the blutooth controller. Oh btw linus capability has been disabled for the slim PS3.

I have a dell Inspiron 531 but i just constantally upgraded it. But if your looking for a great gaming computer most definitally get an Alienware. They are expensive (Around $1,200) but worth the money for what you get and will last for over 30 years if you take care of it properly (Don't let dust collect near the processor thats how i burned out my AMD)
yea i run Crysis at the max at around 80 to 100 fps. But im not gonna lie i mostly play counter strike source which i get 300fps on. BTW why would i play Virtua Fighter 5 when i got Street Fighter 4 :P lol
to be honest the ps3's hardware is outdated. just compare a demanding game like gta4 which runs like shit on the 360 and ps3. but with a decent cpu on the pc, runs twice as fast at higher resolutions.

But its cpu is hell alot better but can't even compare to gultown ( I7 980X)
Also, a nvidia telsa in 10 computers, small tiny cluster will blow that cluster of ps3s.
Tech evolves each day so the ps3 will get outdated easily.

Because just a very few people made use of that opportunity and because of financial reasons i think. Running linux on a ps3 isn' really great anyway...it's sooo slow -,-

@Nameduserful Did you try to delete the partition? I'm no professional, but from what I understand is when you partition data on a hard drive it splits it in to two separate drives. Like Window for example the main drive is recognize as C:/, but data for system restore is on a separate drive like E:/ or F:/ on the same hard drive. So if for some reason you have to do a system restore the computer reboots itself from the E:/. Probably best to contact Sony and see what they have to say about it.

@JulietDeltaCarlie yeah well that includes putting the harddrive in the computer and getting partion magic and well i dont have the patients to do that with school and well i just got ten gigs i cant use out of 80 and i dont play it much so i dont really care but awhile ago my ps3 decided to load linux and would't let you do anything and that was before i found out about the ps3 restore feature.... Google the answer to your problems.

The reason they limit hardware access is to prevent people from using linux to pirate PS3 games. Also i haven't instaled Linux on my PS3 yet but the best use i think you can get from linux on PS3 is running emulators. There is a cool emulator for the PS3 which can run SNES, NES, Mega Drive, GB and GBA games using the blutooth controller. Oh btw linus capability has been disabled for the slim PS3.

I have a dell Inspiron 531 but i just constantally upgraded it. But if your looking for a great gaming computer most definitally get an Alienware. They are expensive (Around $1,200) but worth the money for what you get and will last for over 30 years if you take care of it properly (Don't let dust collect near the processor thats how i burned out my AMD)

yea i run Crysis at the max at around 80 to 100 fps. But im not gonna lie i mostly play counter strike source which i get 300fps on. BTW why would i play Virtua Fighter 5 when i got Street Fighter 4 :P lol

to be honest the ps3's hardware is outdated. just compare a demanding game like gta4 which runs like shit on the 360 and ps3. but with a decent cpu on the pc, runs twice as fast at higher resolutions.
