I was lucky enough to experience this very aircraft (F-HPJB) flying AF1981, and have to say it was the best flight I've ever been on. The Airbus A380 is a fantastic aircraft to fly on as a passenger and I cannot wait to experience such an aircraft again (although I suspect slightly further than LHR - CDG!). I think putting the A380 on this route was an excellent move by Air France, I can't see Lufthansa pulling off a similar trick though :(
I was lucky enough to do this trip with AF - unforgettable experience! I was baffled as to why they would be using the A380 on this route, but then found it was because of scheduling - during the summer one A380 had spare time between its long haul arrival and departure, so instead of have it sitting there, they sent it to London and back. Also a great way to train crews on the new types, and of course us lucky enthusiasts got to fly on this amazing aircraft!
@MeanGene79 actually, Air France are operating CDG-LHR-CDG this summer with the A380 to train the crew that are flying it. It would be even more of a waste not to offer passengers the chance to fly it.
Superb. Such a graceful monster of the skies. I don't care why it comes into LH I am just glad it does. Great capture. You have all the A380's into LH now don't you?
damn thats a nice aircraft : ) what routes does AF operate the A380s on? i dont get why it comes to London from Paris unless its going on to another city later on =/
@sjcgzn08 I read in an aviation weekly magazine that they are doing it for crew training on short legs as it gets into its work.....but if you know anything about England and France, you maybe would understand the real reason is they want to show it off at British Airways' home base - Heathrow!! France has the new plane, BA hasn't :-)
yes on the inside it is indeed really really quiet, but on the outside its louder then the 747, then again it would be the A380 Engines give out 75,000lbs of Thrust Each, thats is amazing!
@ImpulsivePlay3r It really isn't louder than the 747 outside it's quieter. This is not only noticeable by ear but by very sensitive sound equipment around the airport. Ask the residents of Myrtle Avenue whether or not its louder than a 747 when climbing right above their house.
@gunnygundog yeah its very rare because its the first AF a380, first landing in the colours, the first time at heathrow but in coming months there will be more and it wont be rare at all lol
Fantastic, very well captured! Can't wait to go on it now, got wait until August 20th tho. I hate the metal sheets put on the fences at Heathrow, so annoying.
this flew over today and wow was it very loud. they say the plane is quiet but iv'e seen the singapore, emirates and Air france fly over to LHR and for some reason she is loud.
@ImpulsivePlay3r It is louder on take off than at any other time because the engines are working at full power to get her into the air. When you compare it directly with the likes of the 747, A340 etc its much quieter. Heathrow has hundreds of sensors around the airport and approach paths which confirm she is much much quieter.
@ImpulsivePlay3r yea i have flew on it and is a nice bird...when people say that it is quiet...they mean on the inside not the outside...have u ever flown it cause i really like it and think you should
@TheCav94 Crew Training. Apparently, they got an A380 delivered earlier than expected so wanted to provide extra crew training. Also, the A380 they use between Johannesburg is parked most of the day unused so they decided to operate some special flights. Check out for the video description for more details.

@MeanGene79 London-Paris was once the world's largest air route by passengers flown.
BUT, at the same time, the user above us said this was a crew training flight...
