  • I know a better paste you can use... :)

  • Hmmm, I was under the impression that pasting outside of the spiking was to protect only flowerpotting and to stop hot gases from burning away the spiking string, not to actually boost the break. Did I get bad information?

  • @PyroPortrayal Yes, it does all of the above. Pasting also tightens the spiking as the paste dries.

  • @Nighthawkinlight

Wow that was a quick comment. Thanks.

That tightening makes sense, good to know.

Oh and goodluck on your licensing man! Can't wait till I can do the same, my state provides no license while at the same time regulation manufacturing >.<

  • What is shell?

  • I was surprised when you didn't paste the other side of the paper or break the paper. Maybe I'm doing extra work for nothing. I could never paste shells with that brush and spoon though. That looks incredably slow and tedious. I grab hands full of wheat paste and rub it into the paper with my hands

  • @missouripyro No you're right, pasting both sides is better. I learned to build shells with no instruction from others. I have learned a little more since and now paste both sides.

  • @Nighthawkinlight does this work with posters

  • How long will the wheat paste last when its dry?

  • i already know the basics of pyrotechnics, but what are the advantages of canister shells. You seem to make them more often

  • @TheFyroPyro I like them more than ball shells. Most ball shells start to look all the same after a while, but canisters have more options. Look up Maltese fireworks to see some of the best examples of canister shells. You'll see what I mean.

  • @TheFyroPyro Here's a great example: watch?v=zyiMtGJv5r4

  • @Nighthawkinlight I see, like multi-breaks become much easier. But aren't ball shells better for small, say... 1 inch mortars?

  • LOOKS LIKE CUM

  • kako dovra petarda sine:)

  • May I ask why you should not use something like glue for this?

  • @D4NG3R03S use wall paper paste mate dries hard as a rock wheat paste is just an old time thing flour and water when we were kids is glue

  • finished rolling! now light it up and smoke it

  • A nice fat 6"+ paint brush might work well. Maybe even a paint roller.

  • hahahah.... ew that does not look like paste....

  • i have some paper with water activated adhesive on one side and i have been useing to make rocket tubes. could i use the stuff i have as a substitute to craft paper and wheat paste?

  • @NALF67 What you have is called gummed tape. It is used often to paste ball shells, but not often to paste canister shells. It could be used on small (~3") can shells, but I would not recommend it for large ones.

  • how long does it take for a batch of wheat paste to dry out can i keep it for a long period of time if it's in an air tight container

  • @CAIDMASTEROFPYRO it will mold long before it dries out. It can only be stored for a few days before it molds and stinks. Vinegar has been said to increase the shelf life, but I have never tried it.

  • @Nighthawkinlight

Try adding 0,5%-1% of benzalkonium chloride to the wheat paste.

I still got 1 year old wheat paste, kept cool and it should stay fresh forever.

  • so out of curiosity why didnt you top fuse this? im just trying to decide what method i will use when i build my multibreak

  • @panzuman It was top fused, as all but the smallest canister shells should be.

  • @Nighthawkinlight so if i build a double break or larger i should top fuse it? also if i was to buy the tubes from pyro direct can i make my own quick match if i use my hommade black match in it?

  • @panzuman Or even single breaks, yes. I can recommend pyrodirects QM pipe, it works very well with my own black match.

  • @Nighthawkinlight do you recomend the 36 inch pipes? also i just had the thought it would be very cool if you made a video tour of your pyrotechnic work shop just so you can show people what you use for making your shells

  • @panzuman Sure, 36" is good. You can always cut them or tape them together to change the size. My workshop is nothing special, just a room with bits of paper and bentonite everywhere.

  • @Nighthawkinlight oh ok ill order some as soon as they get it in but lol that sounds alot like my workshop!

  • i always add a little bit of gasoline

  • as you said, it is very unlikely to flowerpot, but it would look spectacular if it did. cant wait for the vid on this shell going off

  • I've made about 10 canister shells, and 4 of them was pasted with this method. 6 of the shells flowerpotted, and 4 didn't... Guess wich ones... =D

From now on, I'm going to paste ALL my canister shells! (Made 4 2" shells today...)

And I also rolled a 2" mortar from kraft today, and believe it or not, I used almost a liter of wheat paste...

  • Yep, it can be quite necessary.

  • can i do this with ball shells to

  • Ball shells are pasted, but with strips - not one large sheet like this. Look up the three strip pasting method.

  • @Nighthawkinlight: Okay, but i could use wheat paste. Right? Because I am trying to conserve money and not buy gummed craft paper.

  • Yep sure could

  • I'm going to cry with you if it flowerpots...

  • in romania is no rule against fireworks...well....you cant sell them whit out autorization and thats it....btw i did a awsome fountain just like you did....^_^..man you are awsome..but i still cant find sulfure...darn it...is there anyw ay to replace it?...i want to say how sulfure helps ?...maby i can find a replacement for it..cuz you cant find sulfure in Europe..its ilegal...yeah all conpositions for gun powder/black powder is ilegal 2 sell...so practicaly you cant buy it...-__--...it suks..

  • @ClaudiuMarijuana you can try to find it in a garden shop or buy it off line from china :)

  • WHEN WILL YOU BURN IT ????

  • Unfortunately it will likely not be until late spring.

  • post it to me i want to see this huge thing

  • Do you have a dual rock tumbler style ballmill? I suspect that it's the seal and lid thats at the edge of the table at 6:50 andonwards.. ?

    I've orderedone myself.. ^-^

  • Yep. I no longer have the mill. After a few years use the motor went bad on me. Now I'm building a new one. When you buy that mill be sure to buy an upgrade to the belt, the one that comes with it will break in one use. The clear belt that fits both the 15 and 6lb mills lasted until the mill finally died,

  • @Nighthawkinlight

    Thanks for the tip!

  • Dear Nighthawkinlight, I wondered do you have all this pyrotechnic as a hobby, or do you work as a proffesional pyrotechnicer? Or maybe both? :D

  • Just a hobby.

  • @Nighthawkinlight well i'm excited to see that badboy in the air :D But, you guys from USA, do you also fire firework Newyear or is it only 4th of July?

  • It depends if we can afford it. I like to do both when I can.

  • when are you going to light it?

  • I planned on lighting it at the last two MPAG firework shoots. Now it looks like I may have to wait until May.

  • I'm curious, how does one know all this?

  • Years of research and experimentation.

  • hey man, my motar is iron, not steel. i think it's a little smaller that 5', but pritty big. I was planing to dig it down a little to the ground so that the erea where the shell itsel is being shot is under ground. That sound okay?

  • A multibreak mortar should always be buried. At least 3/4ths of the gun should be underground, not just the bottom. Other than that it should do fine. Keep in mind that shells such as this should be fired several hundred yards from any observers.

  • yea, i'm shooting from the middle of a field, got about 50 meters to each side.

    but i think i'm going to make one explotion shells, had an accident with multibrake before^^;

  • that does not look like wheat paste!

  • very nice

  • why not buy a 5' hdpe they arent exspensive

  • HDPE is not strong enough to handle a multibreak shell. Steel mortars must be used.

  • And I should have the new 5" gun done this Friday so it will be ready for Scotts.

  • Ah excellent, thank you very much! I'll see you there

  • cant wait to see this go boom... a lot of hard work has gone in to it!! lmao make sure ur camera man is good

  • sorry in your miscele you use perclorato or clorato of potassio? Or just nitrate of potassio?(kno3) replay please=)

  • wheat paste looks like wank - paste

  • are you going to be making other fireworks vids to pass the time until this one launches

  • Yep

  • It doesn't seem worth doing all this just to blow it up in less than 10 seconds

  • Good thing this one is timed for about 15 seconds...

  • I'm guessing it's a lot like setting up dominoes or training for a marathon. The journey is the fun part. The end result is just a bonus.

  • Nice vid. But when is the launch?

    I cant wait.

  • It should have been yesterday, but that did not work out. I may have to wait until December at the next MPAG shoot. I will try to fire it before then.

  • Almost a shame to blow it up =P

  • Does this multi-break have a quick break or a delayed break?

  • ? Huh?

  • Does the multi-break shell have a long delay between the second break? or is it an instant double break?

  • All three shells are timed, as well as the inserts. So no, it is not instant.

  • Ok, thanks.

  • Comparing a pyrotechnic with a terrorist is offensive.

  • yeah your right,, was a bad joke ,,

    be lucky

  • great video like always!

if im correct i believe you shot this off today, how did it go?

  • Unfortunately I did not. The proper gun to fire this shell from was not brought to the shoot, so I could not fire it. I still have the shell and it will be fired at the very latest on December 10th at the next MPAG shoot.

  • If you guys want to see some really big shells like this, check out this vid at the 2009 PGI.

    watch?v=a4TfBgaeM18

  • Cool man! I had no idea how to paste a canister shell, so you helped me out.

  • awesome video, but wait, watch it without sound

  • Wow F'n nice man!

  • looks grose the paste not even saying wat it looks like i think you will know xD:P

  • Jizz! :D....

    OT: Nice video.

  • do you have a vid of firing it?

  • really nice dude

Thats a monster of shell, good luck on firing it ;)

  • What mortar do you have for lifting such large shell?

  • I do not have one, though MPAG should. Shells such as this are fired out of a longer than usual steel mortar. I have not confirmed that there will be one at the shoot yet, so that could offer me some problems today.

  • there are so many that's what she said moments in here. my favorite 6:26.

    Sorry man, just couldn't resist.

    Nice vid!

  • hahhaha, mind out of the gutter much? i cant wait to see this thing launch though :D

  • Well yeah usually, but this one just struck me.

same here. it's going to be amazing

  • looks like jizz

  • damn... how much lift is that mofo gunna need? haha

  • to make it look nicer on the ends you can cut the flaps about 1-1.5" in diameter and fold down. But great video! Cant wait for you to shoot it off!

  • That is for the paper can before spiking. Typically, the pasting is not cut to keep it as strong as possible.

  • l sent u a pm on apc too! :)

  • Very informative. Thanks for your hard work. But what purpose does it serve in the performance of the shell? I know this is typically done but I just don't see why.

  • maybe it stops the string form being burnt or melted before the break, just a guess

  • Pasting is vitally important to protect the very thin layer of cardboard around the stars from the lift. It also is important to lock in the spiking as well as tighten it. In addition, it provides extra confinement to the break. It is a must for all shells 3" and up.

  • Thanks for the info but I'm still a bit puzzled. I can't imagine the cardboard losing its intergity from the lift charge. If that were the case wouldn't a simple quick coating of sodium silicate be the best choice? To "lock" the spiking could be accomplished with the paste alone. The additional confinement I would think is negligeable. Please don't take my questioning as a critique...it's not. You do wonderful work. I'm jut trying to justify the extra work and coventional wisdom. Thanks

  • it helps stop from melting the string before the break and helps keep the shell from flower potting and attaching the lift cup , well that's just a guess and is why i do it plus it looks nicer when finnished

  • Thanks for your input.

  • The cardboard around the stars is only a single layer of ~2mm thick. That is not near enough to withstand the thousands of pounds of pressure from lift. Pasting with wheat paste in addition to the spiking forms a protective and even confinement around the shell as strong as fiberglass. It is very necessary, in both the reliability of shells, as well as the break.

  • Then why not make the cardboard around the stars thicker?

  • Thin canisters allow the spiking to take most of the force of the burst, which makes for a much more even break than would thick paper. For this to work properly, the spiking needs to be very secure, which is again a benefit of spiking.

  • Got ya. Thanks for taking the time to explain!

  • Beautiful...What are the stars in each break?

  • 1 Silver/Purple/TT burst to Purple/TT 1.5" insert ring

    2 Purple/TT burst

3 TT to 1/2" Mg salute ring, 17 of em if I remember correctly.

  • This is going to be incredible. I should grab some popcorn and wait for your upload ;D

  • weed paste? mmmmmmmmm great idea q:

wow cant wait to see that one xD

  • are you going to film this..? btw looks like its gonna be a good shell... would suck if it flowered

  • Absolutely I will. The camera getting blasted out of my hand would be all that could stop me.

  • agreeing with freedomistfreeffs wtf its like bigger than the tube, also looks like sperm...

  • There are special extra long steel mortars made for multibreak shells.

  • You should make a huge rocket with a shell in the cone.

  • May I just ask, what the hell are you gonna shot that thing out of? A tank? :P

  • Nope, big ol' steel mortar.

  • A 5" really isn't that big compared to some of the display ones... You can get a 5" HDPE mortar tube at pyrodirect for $13 :)

  • Yes but it weights some 'cause of the height. That was my biggest consideration.

  • A multibreak shell may not be fired out of HDPE. They may only be fired out of steel long guns.

  • O I did not think about that. Is it because of the length of the HDPE tube?

  • As well as the strength. An HDPE mortar cannot handle a multibreak shell.

  • what if you bury it? I use PVC pipes and they've held perfectly when buried. The earth around it is tighly packed though. PVC is even alot weaker than HDPE i think.

  • It would be possible. Yet, 5" pvc is not an easy size to come by.

  • yea, but 4" is easy to get :)

  • When do you shoot it?

  • Tomorrow.

  • Comment removed

  • Awsome Only if I could get my money right!

  • ohhh, im dying to see this thing blowing up.....

  • wasnt it going to be a 4 break shell?

  • Yes, but I ran out of time as well as having ball mill issues. The shoot is tomorrow.

  • What a sweet looking shell, the shell makers in Malta would be proud of you.

  • i wonder how much it weigths

  • I haven't weighed it yet, but I would guess ~15lbs.

  • i use watergals

  • AWESOME! Your tutorials is awesome!

  • Looks like semen

  • lol..

  • Awesome 5 stars!
