I think if one stays aware enough one should be fine. In all honesty I am extremely pleased with the amount of mysterious old bookstores I have found here. I found one today which had a whole SECTION devoted to Edward Gorey! I was in heaven!
I know of this little shop that has a bunch of trinkets and nik naks, and it has a whole corner that LOOKS like Edward Gorey. His mind, I mean.
California ain't so bad, when you find the right little places to go to. I think I've just been here waaay too long and need to find other trinket and book shops.
It's in North Hollywood. The Illiad Book-shop. It is amazing. And yeah, it's all about finding the right places. Concentrate not on the overwhelming ridiculousness, but rather on the small places that may matter to you. The only way to do it!
California sucks the life and intelligence out of people. Believe me. I know from personal experience.
I wonder why The Rolling Stones didn't use that original "Black Paint" song.
