Bill Chase was making the link that was needed to show how a Trumpet IS a Rock & Roll instrument !! No one has really followed thru to show this ! I Personally do NOT like what I call " SCREECH ARTIST ! " His Music speaks for itself !
Ok...just to stir the pot a bit, I'll have to say that Bill, Maynard, Doc and the rest were all fantastic and had their own individual styles, but my favorite is Bushmill's Single Malt aged 25 years Irish Whiskey! Seriously, though, we were all blessed to have lived during the times of such greats in the world of music. We should appreciate the ones who are still with us and always remember the ones who are no longer with us.
I saw all the Jazz Rock and Big Bands of that day! Knew Buddy,Maynard, and Doc well and they were Fantastic-. BUT it was Travis Street Electric Company,Dallas,Texas in the Summer of 74 where I witnessed 4 Thunderbolt Blasting lead Trumpet players lead by the Great Bill Chase of the U.S.A. laying down a screeching WALL OF POWER with his Fabulous Band!! THE BEST!!
Back in the mid 70's, when the Seattle Supersonics were broadcasting a game, this was the song the station opened and closed the broadcast with. Didn't find out the name of the song or who it was until I heard the LP in the early 80's.
Wow, I was 15 years old when I heard my first Bill Chase album. I was blown away. Now I am 43 and I get those same chills from not only hearing him play, but now seeing him in concert. There will never be another Bill! I told my wife I wanted Chase live for Xmas this year!!
Whatever band Bill Chase played in, his influence was dynamic. To have played lead trumpet in the bands of Woody Herman, Stan Kenton and, yes, Maynard Ferguson he had to have been a bit special. For anyone interested, check out Woody Herman's " A Taste Of Honey". Bill Chase wrote the arrangement and solos beautifully. Yes, he could play ballads.
It doesn't seem to matter what gets on Youtube someone always has to start the "who is best game." It really is silly. When you get to the top musicians of any instrument of any generation there is no best. Especially when you compare across genres. It's like saying which 12 yr Old Single Malt is the best. Maynard, Mendez, Terry, Chase, Doc, Hirt, Dizzy, Andre and the rest of the transcendent players are all the best. We should thank the gods for all of them enjoy the music. Jeff
I agree with you totally Jeff. In my opinion comparison is odious. However for me Bill Chase was one ot the two most exciting and inspirational musicians of my time. The other was Buddy Rich. Jeff
Amen onejagjeff, For all of you that only know Chase from Youtube, Amazon has a three albun set on two CDs. The thing about Maynard, Chase, etal. is not just their musicianship its their musical innovation. The chords, time signatures and fusions of jazz, rock, blues, and classical put them in their own class! Those who master the repertoire are great artists. But those who forge their own paths into new sounds are truly special. Whether Chase, MF, or Vanessa Mae; these are the heroes! Jeff
This one of the better responses I have heard to the "who is the greatest of trumpet players." They are all great and you really cant even begin to compare maynard who was always a soloist of big bands to wynton who is a classical and jazz player or chase who really made his mark as a lead player. People are just stupid I assume.
I feel kinda bad about starting the Marsalis vs Chase debate. They are Completely different. Every player is. You listen to certain players for different things. Don't listen to Maynard and expect to get Dizzy.
how can you compare Chase & Wynton. To be honest, it's unfair to both. Chase was a lead player and the best ever! Wynton is a soloist in both jazz and classical. You can't compare Doc and Chase, or Freddie & Chase. Now against Gozzo, Porcino, etc. that's different. Bill was in a league of his own for lead playing. Nobody then or now has come close and if you think so then you don't listen
What I like about Bill is that he didn't just scream like maynard did. He could do almost all of it. Double tounge, octive slurs, scale mixing. A more beautiful powerful sound not had since.
I saw Chase in Mt. Pleasant Michigan just a couple of days before the plane crash that snuffed them out too soon. It's taken me this long to come back without the sadness.
This is a great video, the one from Japan in April '72 is even more amazing, though THIS video has better "close-up's" with Bill and in a more "intimate" setting as well.
Oh, yes there was tooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnns of cocaine. I'm good buddies with several of the band members (as many might be) and most of the stories I know of cannot be printed (smile) But God almighty he was the best-the sound, the syle, the power...one of a kind. Maynard was something, but Chase was one-of-a-kind!
I first heard a recording of Chase in 1973 when I attended a summer mnusic conference at SUNY Fredonia. At a general meeting they played a recording of Chase for the audience At the first note, every trumpet player in the hall stood up - shocked and thrilled- most of us had never heard anything like it. (And we thought we were good players already- what a wonderful lesson for us!)His playing transformed my approach to playing the trumpet.

Love the Chase and his band, spent endless wonderful hours listening to Chase back in the 70's. Required listening, along with Steely Dan and Maynard MF Bands.
Saw Bill Chase in 1974 at a high school perfomance and during the clinic he put on before the show, he tied two strings to his trumpet and had a kid hold it in the air. Chase played without holding his trumpet and still hit stratopheric notes without any pressure at all. Amazing player, amazing talent, amazing times. No one has ever come close. Too bad it had to end so suddenly.
It's ridiculous that this is the first time I've ever seen a video of Chase performing as a group, since I've loved the music for 35 years. They played on a few TV shows when "Get it On" was charting, but other than that, this is it! Thanks, Pancho - awesome!
CHASE!!! What an awesome musician and band...tight no matter where they are!!! Great inspiration for young trumpet players...but none can match him!!!
hey man, great video! can you post the full version of "close up tight" if you have? I've been looking all over for that song from this session. Thanks again!
Got this on a promotional 7" 45. Studio version of course, not live.
It's on the B side of Run Back To Mama.
It says "Promotion copy not for sale - Release date: 28th June 1974"

yeah, you do have a point. However there are players better than Wynton. Mostly European. There are a lot of really good russian players.

Wow....What a thrill! I've listen to Bill Chase since the 70's and have NEVER actually seen him play. Pancho, thanks for posting.
Although he is obviously high as a kite, he plays with such power and ease. It seems his lip is about to fall off after each segment.
What a shame to have lost him at such an early age. He was destined to be Maynard's legacy.
