How long did this journey/escapade/experience take????? Please someone inform me...I have been trying to calculate it, but there are far too many variables... :/
Seeing your own world from above like that could indeed change your perspective on everything, it's surely one of the most emotional sceneries you could ever witness. Let's arrange for a flight like that with all the world leaders and see what happens in the week after that :P
Thats was phenomenal, thanks for sharing. It's also amazing to think that these aircraft have been around for decades, what they achieved back then, makes it so much more impressive.
That was amazing! I wish they'd show this on BBC America. This confirms my suspicion that James May is the coolest person on television in America or Britain.
@toxiczebra17 The pressure out side is lower than the inside of the cabin. The cabin and the suits are pressurized to keep it at regulations atmospheric conditions.
@NASA787: I remember flying in 767's/747 Boeing's from Ft. Wayne, IN to Ft. Myers, FL leveled flt alt at 38, 000 ft. and I always seen fog/condensation..form on the window's..yes I loved looking out the windows sitting in the Wing seat watching us tip our wings like Eagles!
+ I love America, James May, you can thank America for that ride later!
@WayneTown260 The most facinating thing about flight for me is able to soar in the sky and look at the iconic scenery that not many people see everyday. I love airplanes and they've been a major part of my life, and to see this video I can see that the sky is not the limit. Some people say they don't like American's and I am okay with that, but in the end it's those people whom don't care about what people say about they, but what they can do for others.
@mechcalvin Dude just fucking drop it. Where sitting here watching an amazing flight, and your dumbass is sitting here talking about fucking god I mean seriously. What happened to just watching and commenting about the topic at hand, what does god have to do with this.
70k feet up!! what a beautiful sight to see :). Thank you for this video!!, makes me wish i could of had the support to train what i wanted to train for but my father forced me to train what he wanted me to train for! lol never did work out for him or me lol !! now-a-days im just hoping there will be civilian space travel where it doesnt break the wallet!! I would love to experience non gravity and a glimpse earth 70k feet some day!!
@shayorshayorshayor wait...are you saying that the British don't have any airbases? They don't have the U2 but they have airbases that could facilitate it. They have the facilities just not the aircraft. Plus it's Jeremy that talks shit about the US not James. They would never let Jeremy up there hahahaha.
okay if i was to ppurchase a oxgen mask like james may, then get a parachute and tie myself to loads of helium ballons and popped them at this distance would i survive?
Glad you enjoyed the ride Mr.May. The Apollo astronauts didn't see the earth from the moon as a dust mite. The big bang theorem had not yet been put forward. You glaze into eternity from the observation seat of a U-2 and you see nothing beyond the paltry understanding of humans? Kind of pathetic, really. There is much more at work than we mere humans can comprehend. As our total understanding of physics has been called into question by resent observations by L-L labs and CERN.
@keabird111 No, Moron, I'm implying man, is his arrogance has come to think they have all the answers, when in fact, all they have done lately is disprove what they thought they knew. I think you miss the point. All of of your knowledge is the knowledge of man. What else can you possibly have? You may appear to have the reasoning of [say] fungus, but you can not claim to have the same knowledge.
@keabird111 So, if you have all the answers as you imply, then answer the question I posed. We, man, think we know many things, but lately, all science has done is call it all into question, if you can. All you are doing with this argument is prove how right I am. you cling to flawed data and theory. Say it with me, We don't know. We suspect, we expect, but the fact remains we have no fact. So, Amoeba boy, until you have real answers, don't waste my time.
I think earth is not our true home and that is why we yearn to leave this planet. We get happy when we realize it's possible to go home (where ever that is).
@miffymichael8 Only if their sight can not be corrected to 20/20 and no effect on depth perception or astigmatism. Many pilots wear eye glasses. Including two that flew the SR-71. Many air line pilots wear glasses or contacts.
this video is unbelievable i was speach less just about the whole time. Truely astonishing at how the world looks when you dont think of government, wars, killings, etc.
I love flyinf when it's cloudy like that. Gliding across the clouds in that weather always feels like I am on a boat and the clouds are the vast open sea.
@tedman55 your completely correct, but if I may everyone stop complaint this video is absolutely beautiful I'm a grown man and I can admit that. There's so many things we know nothing about so can't we all just relax and be grade full that we have earth..
To think that everyday the world is getting hotter and hotter and is going to be gone in the near future, nothing is going to be able to live here, everything will die, but yet no-one is doign anything about it.
@abvmoose87 a reasonable question - theres no air up there, theres no air to power the engine, or make the wings fly. also each 1000 ft that you climb, requires 4 times the energy then the 1000 ft before it, hence the need for rockets.
turbine engines also stop being efficient past a certain speed which is required to get into space
@davery25 Why would climb 1000ft more recuire 4 times the energy? Shouldnt it be the other way around because gravity becomes less strong the farther you get from the earth?
@abvmoose87 you're right, what i meant to say was, each 1000 ft faster you go requires 4 times the energy then the energy before it.
the main reason is that theres no air, any higher than the 70,000 ft and it runs out of air for the wings and engines to work, but still within the reach of gravity so it would simply fall out of the sky. at 70k feet, the U2's stall speed is only about 10 km/h (yep 10kmh or 6mph) slower than the speed its going, so its already on the edge of its limits.
@abvmoose87 also someone mentioned that the space vacuum would crush it, but it wouldnt as the u-2 isn't pressurised, hence why they're wearing space suits in the cockpit.
It makes no sence trying to convince people that god exists or not. Everyone has his own beliefs, everyone should find out what's right for himself. So why turning around arguing, people did thousands of years ago and they will for ever. You waste your time to prove or disprove but it doesn't matter, just enjoy your lives.
@wasdom01 great selection in your playlist. will definitely be trawling through them tonight. appreciate the upload but YouTube high def and HDTV with HD channels are two completely different things. I want to see the atmospheric horizon it crystal clarity with my HD glasses on.
@iTchySkiDs HD glasses? Are you telling me I'm going to have to buy ANOTHER set of glasses besides the 3D ones I've already got?! I'm going to need to get a second job. ;)
@PeninsulaBoy217 yes, I thought the U-2 was familiar whilst watching this. I just recently watched a program about area 51 being the secret test base for this stealth plane. Also the base painted obscure aircraft shapes on the ground every day to confuse the spying Russians.
@jmhvera100 It's light reflecting off a plane (presumably a passenger jet) flying below them. Jetliners typically cruise around 30-35,000 feet. The U2 that James is in is about 70,000 feet.
It s so incredible!!! Why destroying it and hate each other? We should be thanksfull and respectfull for having the chance to live on such wonderfull miracle.
This is awesome. Just imagine how some of the first guys that flew the U-2 felt, knowing that they were travelling deep into the USSR and would probably be mistaken for a UFO by anyone who saw them.
How ironic is it that Captain Slow is going faster then the other 2 Top Gear boys and going into space?
Well Jeremy I would like to see your Mercedes SLS fly into space.

Sorry guys i dont understand what is he saying about the lights of 3:00... What is that light?
jmhvera100 2 months ago
@jmhvera100 It's light reflecting off a plane (presumably a passenger jet) flying below them. Jetliners typically cruise around 30-35,000 feet. The U2 that James is in is about 70,000 feet.

This is awesome. Just imagine how some of the first guys that flew the U-2 felt, knowing that they were travelling deep into the USSR and would probably be mistaken for a UFO by anyone who saw them.

@ClamCrunchy Not really since the Russians shot one down after invading their airspace in 1960.
