@abvmoose87 a reasonable question - theres no air up there, theres no air to power the engine, or make the wings fly. also each 1000 ft that you climb, requires 4 times the energy then the 1000 ft before it, hence the need for rockets.

turbine engines also stop being efficient past a certain speed which is required to get into space

@abvmoose87 you're right, what i meant to say was, each 1000 ft faster you go requires 4 times the energy then the energy before it.

the main reason is that theres no air, any higher than the 70,000 ft and it runs out of air for the wings and engines to work, but still within the reach of gravity so it would simply fall out of the sky. at 70k feet, the U2's stall speed is only about 10 km/h (yep 10kmh or 6mph) slower than the speed its going, so its already on the edge of its limits.
