@sailoramaya I was walking around my retro store that was in a mall, and they were selling one. I laughed my ass off when I saw it there. Even the employee said it was retarted that they were selling it
I remember seeing the VB in stores when I was little and ask my parents for it they said no and told me I probably wouldn't like it. After playing it at a friend's house...Thank you Mom and Dad. Years later its a good thing the 3DS is WAY better.
I think media fooled you all. Even the games on our current gen console have nothing to do with 3D. It's really nothing but rendered graphics. The term 3D are used way too many times with movies and even television. It also has nothing to do with 3D. It's an old technology called a stereoscopic view. After all, would you call a magazine cutout slightly raised from a page a 3 dimensional object? You all have been fooled. American media brain washed you and called it 3D to be more marketable.
Don't we all miss the days when 3D was just a rare gimmick? Now it's an entire marketing scam being shoved down our faces thanks to a stupid piece-of-sh!t movie called Avatar!
Virtual Boy was then, now we have 3-D TV compatible games and interactive ones like the Wii, Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move. and the grand daddy, the Nintendo 3DS for making Glasses free 3-D
Meh. I never played this console, so I don't know how hard it is on the eyes, but i dont think you should be hating on something that tried to be innovative. Bitching about games being in red and the name of the console, really ? Most of the games you talked about were okay at least, and in 3D. There are so much more terrible games on regular consoles. And when I see what the 3DS is now, there hasnt been much progress in the 3D effects and we're 16 years later.
Maybe they only used red because it would be too much like reality if they used too much color. It'd make your brain so confused you'd think it was real.
...
In a way, you could say the creators saved us from virtual certain doom.
How many of you guys want the nerd to review Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Battle 22 for the PS1? That is easily one of the worst games ever! And he can do PS1 games because he did Independence Day on the PS1! Who agrees with me?!
Looking at this video again, I think they should remake some of the decent Virtual Boy games for 3DS. I'd love to play Virtual Boy Wario Land. Just rename it Wario Land 3D, put it up for download on the eShop, and there you go. It would probably sell a lot better than it did on Virtual Boy.
@Fredrik2012 Not really. The 3DS is a really good system. For one, it's actually portable! Second, it doesn't make itself out to be VR when it isn't. It's just stereoscopic 3D, but unlike the VB, the 3DS's 3D is sharp, clean, and looks really good and no need for glasses and can be switched on and off. I admit the battery life is a problem, but it's still a good handheld. Nintendo has a thing for innovating their consoles and they've done it again, and it's really well done.
@ECL28E Well... It is portable! For a few hours... But it still hurts your eyes (at least mines) and the joystick sucks! The 3D isn't the best either... My head...! :)
I only played this in the store as a kid, maybe 30 minutes of gameplay time, and I remember it very well, why? Because it was that unpleasant. The goggles were only for one size, I remember moving so much trying to get comfortable that it rubbed my face raw, and the headaches that came from playing it were worse. I played it, and never had an interest in owning one afterwards.
i can`t believe anyone actually bought one of these! its hard to believe that nintendo, the creators of the NES, the console that saved the gaming industry from dying actually created this stupid head-held (its on your head, get it?) i mean i`d get it if it was a full colour system that actually had a headstrap, a slimmer design and a better controller, it would make sence to be like this since it would increase the console`s potential massicely, it could beat the gameboy if it was like that
@evilgamers1 Well, Nintendo didn't want to put a headstrap on the VB because they thought we'd walk out into the street with it. Also the VB was out in a time when Gameboy was getting old and the SNES was losing in the 32-bit era. Nintendo needed a 32-bit console Oh, and in reguard to your complaint about it not being in full color, it had to be that way. LED was only in red in 1995 if they used LCD it could have been in color, but then the 3d wouldnt work. Not trying to be rude just giving info
@evilgamers1 Well, this was Nintendo trying to compete with SEGA. Before the Virtual Boy SEGA was attempting to create a 3d console called SEGA VR an add-on to the genesis but it used LCD screens and it caused motion sickness and failed before it made it to the market. Nintendo wanted to rise where SEGA failed. So Gunpei Yokoi gave a prototype to Nintendo, he wanted a slimmed down version but Nintendo needed something on the market right away and mass produced the prototype.
@QuickmanBlue really? if you have sources that can be published on wikipedia! pity the VB was never released in PAL reigons i wanted to play some Mario Clash and the emulator i have makes everything green and blue and shits around.
I actually plan to make a Virtual Boy 2 in the future. It will even have first person shooters:Duke Nukem 3D,Doom,Doom 2,Wolfenstein 3D+Nocturnal Missions,Spear Of Destiny missions 1,2+3...and the list goes on!
Red alarm uses both D pads and I find it pretty playable, I like the fact that Nintendo attempted to make something different but it is true that the technology to build a 3D portable system was not ready, they could have waited for decent color LCD screens... Or use two plasma screens like on Gamegear!
Hrm... Atlus game Jack Bros. Shame it wasn't translated though because they make incredibly well-written plot. I didn't know Atlus actually had a game specifically for their mascot.
It is actually tiring to watch the games from the video. Imagine actually having this piece of shit in front of you and start playing! You'd rather have a cobra shoot venom in your eyes!
WHAT?!?!? No, no, no, no! That's the n°1 rule for Mario games: A= Jump, B= Grab, Run, Throw fireballs! You do NOT swap that! It's like raping someone's childhood
4:30 "you can really become the Pinball Wizard". It's a reference to The Who's song, "Pinball Wizard", a great song BTW. It's about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who plays pinball like fuck.
"nobody really gives a shit about virtual reality anymore" well then they might as well make call of duty and battlefield 3rd person perspective games rather than 1st person, also just to prove you wrong, need for speed: shift 2 unleashed (do not play this game, shitty as all hell) has a helmet cam! it makes driving more realistic because when you turn the character moves his head and you can see parts of the helmet when at angles and the visor shadow so saying no one cares is technicly wrong
are people ACTUALLY comparing the 3DS and the virtual boy. Wow, people are really stupid, the 3DS has already sold like 10 times more and is constantly getting better
I heard nintendo got impatient with the devopers of the vr 32. They took so long to create a decent design with color. Nnintendo scraped the new designs and sold the prototype design.

Not quite. James makes it very clear and simple. Marketed as a portable system. No color. Causes headaches. It used some 3D elements, but unlike the Nintendo 3DS, this was calles "VIRTUAL" Boy.
And I also think that the technology was too young, and honestly... I kindda liked the VB concept, but I'd get really tired of the red screens, and I tried it out. If this was 1995 o 1996, I'd stick to the Game Boy
@JamesNintendoNerd There ARE 3 really close virtual reality things, they are the kinect (hands free, voice,Xbox 360),Playstation Move (PS3), and the Wii. Kinect is my personal favorite because it is hands free and no use of a remote. And it says right on the box "You ARE the controller.".
P.S. Do you have an Xbox 360? And if you do, get a Kinect and review it :) .
Just watching these clips of Virtual Boy games on Youtube is making my eyes, head, and ass hurt. I can only imagine what the real thing must be like...
Red Alarm was a good game? Just watching the Nerd play it made my head hurt. It's just a bunch of lines with no definition of where you can even go! Maybe I'm missing something having not played it myself, but it looks not only bad, but unplayable.
I think I had a version of this when I was younger but it was black, handheld (about the size of a gameboy advance, but bulky( and toook four AA batteries, two in each side... the screen folded out and slid out from the main body and the screen was black.... the game, red lighting, like this sorta. I don't remember the name of it, but I THINK it was from Sega, and there was an X in it... like eXtreme something or somethig, idr..... I'VE WANTED TO KNOW WHAT THIS IS FOREVER someone please help me!
You know, I just realised... the Virtual Boy was released on August 14th, 1995 in North America, which also happens to be the day I was born! I hope that's not some kind of Bad Omen...
@RedBeaver3 You also have to take the terrible design of the console into account. The thing was incredibly unwieldy, and nigh impossible to play multiplayer with. Also the monochrome coloring's a pretty big downside too. While you're right in principle, I think that the major flaws of the Virtual Boy also had a pretty large impact on its decline.
He forgot SD Dimension Gundam War, Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Space Squash, Virtual Bowling, Virtual Fishing, and Virtual Lab. Sorry, just nitpicking - he hasn't reviewed the whole VB library.

P.S. Do you have an Xbox 360? And if you do, get a Kinect and review it :) .

@RedBeaver3 Fair enough.
One more gripe from your first comment...
